So we've had approximately 8 new iPads delivered over the past few weeks. Our latest order arrived yesterday but there was an extra 32Gb iPad. I've checked and double checked and we certainly didn't order it, nor have we paid for it.
Being a chap with morals I feel a bit uneasy about keeping hold of it, but at the same time I'm tempted to do just that. I feel almost certain they'll find me out!
So what would you do? Is it likely they'll never come looking for me if I keep it?

i'd contact them and ask for an order conformation receipt to be issued/reissued to see if it appears on there

I'd leave it sealed to one side for a month or 2. If they contact you say you've been waiting for them to arrange collection and it's still sealed waiting. If it passes a couple of months, based on the qty they've sold, they will never be able to work it out

As you have just broadcast it to the whole world i would contact Apple and ask for the order confirmation to be sent again. If it doesn't appear alert them to the fact you have received an extra one and what they want you to do.
I certainly wouldn't risk a criminal conviction or even sacking over a £500 gadget :chicken:

Yeah, to be honest I was tempted just to put it to one side and forget about it. Our receptionist signed for them and we've got so much kit lying around it would be easy to overlook it.
I asked for order confirmation and an invoice and it is definitely not on there.
Ultimately I'm not trying to profit out of this, but you don't look a gift horse in the mouth do you!

Yeah, I'm going to leave it a week then call and say it looks like we've got an extra one. I might add that due to the volume we ordered it has been opened accidentally, and just see what they say.

Ah the act of theft based on chances of being caught. I'm sure joyriders run through a similar process before they help themselves to your motor. On the topic of that IPads have serial numbers, GPS chips and have to be registered to Apple. Not ideal. Personally I'd phone apple and tell them.

Well I've taken the necessary steps to ascertain why it was delivered and notify them of it. Anything else I can do to distance myself from it?!

That's all you need to do I think. If you take reasonable steps to locate or notify the owner and you are unsuccessful I think then you fine in keeping it too. Might even be buy 9 get one free worth checking first though :-)

My dads nikon dslr needed repairing and was under warranty so he sent it off to be repaired. A few weeks later he got a brand new replacement one through the post. He Thought they can't repair it and thought nothing of it. A week later he got his old camera back and was in full working order and obviously had been repaired! He rang up Nikon and they couldn't care less and told him to keep them both! Sort of related, I know it doesn't help your situation :signLOL:

In my experience they're very reasonable with things like this. For example last week we had a massive accident with one of our new iPads, the upshot being that the screen was shattered. We called Apple and they had a replacement shipped to us within 3 days. Mind you, with that is mind they might not be so accommodating!

I have a similar situation with an Iphone4S. Went into vodafone and they told me I was due an upgrade so went along with it and walked out with a new phone. Phone had a fault so told them and they said they would send a new one out by post or I can collect from store.
Next day I collect one in the store, but keep getting texts to say my contract is due for renewal etc... Go into store to renew a different contract and walk out with another new iphone4S but upon inspection of the paperwork they have just renewed the same contract as they did just days before :confused:
I explain the situation, they don't really care and insist its correct, they dont want the phone back. I still have the other iphone4S in its box, has been there for months now.

I would keep it in it wrapper for a month, then if they don't claim it I would keep it and install it in the dashboard of my car :signLOL:

are you being dishonest - you know that you didn't order the iPad
does the property belong to another - yes it belongs to Apple
do you have the intention - mens rea (mental element of the offence)
do you intend to permanently deprive - right now you could have a defence.. 'yes i realised it wasn't mine i was about to send it back/double checking i didn't order it' the moment you decide to keep it (intent 'mens rea') the defence is lost
you decide :)

I'd give it back. Your peace of mind is worth more than an ipad.
When ever i've done the right thing like this, I've always felt brilliant afterwards. :happy2:

It's not like you've gone into the shop and stole it. Notify apple give them 14 days to collect if not you will be accepting their gift. There was something on a tv program and anything posted to you can be accepted as a gift

Yeah, the only thing that got my mind ticking was that it was addressed to me and delivered to me in my name. It's not like I found it in the street.
However, as stated yesterday, I did contact them yesterday to inform them. They were very grateful and are going to let me know if they want it back.

Yep, they said my honesty astounded them, and as such I can keep it. I'm sure the £18k spend with them over the last 12 months had some bearing too.
Just got to decide what to do with it now, but I won't be keeping hold of it. I'll possibly donate it to charity.

Is this something that the hospice will use? I don't mean that in a bad way don't get me wrong ; I have worked with a number of charities in the past and still do. Just wondered if cash raised by auctioning as someone else mentioned could be more useful?
Of course as you have been close to them or a long time you probably know already, just my thoughts as imagine could make a lot for it, especially as for such a good cause :happy2:

I'll advise them of its value, and after that it's up to them. I can see them sticking it on eBay to be honest. Either way, I can't benefit from it, so I'm pleased that someone else will be able to.

Well, well, turn of events! After receiving the order I triple checked the order and also phoned Apple to make 100% sure we had not ordered the extra iPad. It was not listed anywhere on our account, something that was confirmed by one of their sales execs. However, we received our invoice today and they have charged us for it! Seems a weird error and no one at Apple can offer any explanation as to what happened. Upshot is that it's going back! Good job I hadn't given it away yet.
