Title: Nothing but trouble since i bought it!!!
Post by: Craigh1983 on April 06, 2012, 05:48:44 pm
Hi,

I've posted a few threads on here the past couple of weeks about my GTI and problems i've been having with it. I've only had it 6 weeks and the wipers stopped working, got this sorted then had to have the coil packs changed at vw as there was a misfire, then the engine warning light came on and had to have the intake manifold flap replaced. 2 days ago I put some STP injector cleaner into the petrol tank to try to clean the fuel injectors to help with the misfire.

I was just about to set off to go to the Peak District and the engine light started flashing and I could feel the car running on 3 cylinders. Took it straight down to VW and they told me there was oil in the spark plugs and cylinder 3 was misfiring. The mechanic told me it would need further investigation, which will take 6 hours but he thinks it could be a wright off!!!!!! I am gutted!

Spoke to another mechanic and he has told me it isn't a right off and could be the fuel injector heads causing the misfire and piston rings causing oil in the spark plugs and hes going to have a look Sunday. Does anyone else have any ideas because id be gutted if it was completely knackered!??

Thanks guys.

Well for a starters it aint a write off because you could prob get a decent engine without ancillaries for about £800 quid. Secondly dont go to vw because they will just have your pants well and truly down. Is there an independant near you that you could go to? If so take it to one of them. You seem to get better advice from indys imo. I wouldn't panic untill you know the real extent. Chin up.  :happy2:

Someone else on here had loads of trouble with cylinder 3, think it was Tfsi_Mike. Think it says in his build thread about it but it all did get sorted in the end

He had an injector problem that was solved by replacing the injector.

if engine light came on and you replaced the part and now its back on wouldn't your 1 stop be to bring it back to the place that "fixed" the issue?

My cylinder 3 missfire was cured with a new injector  :happy2:

I agree with the comment on finding your local VAG indy / specialist  :happy2:  Where are you based there are several very good specialists that frequent this place

Well originally the light came on and stayed on so took it to vw and they hooked it up to the computer and said it was the intake manifold flap. I got my mechanic cousin to sort that our but didn't cure misfire. Today I had the light come on when increasing speed in 2nd gear but the light was flashing this time. Took back to vw and they said there was oil in the spark plugs and cylinder 3 was misfiring. Again my cousin will look at it Sunday and do a compression test on it. Thing is I don't know why there would be oil in the spark plugs. I do hope it's just the fuel injectors tho!

Not happy

Just emailed you back

If you need a new injector I recommend SERE motors Belfast

Seat dealer but they share the same parts.  Very competitive prices and great, rapid service.  New injector with seal kit was about £90 iirc

tuner wise you've also got the option of R-Tech in Hinckley. they know their stuff, and they're a great bunch of lads

Funnily enough I also have a cylinder 3 missfire that looks to be a faulty injector.  I have a new one turning up next week.

I've got some spare used GTi injectors in stock if its for a 200 bhp car and I can do brand new s3 injectors for 70 quid each.

R tech are the closest to you, but as Mike's says I'm only 50 miles away.  Give me a call if you need any help or advice.

Craig - sorry to hear of the issues.

If you're in Leicester(?), you're nicely based in the Midlands with some good options within 50-70 miles max I would expect.
There are two VAG/Porsche specialists I can recommend my way (Northampton) if you're stuck for a source. Both provide a good service and will be cheaper then Volkswagen direct.

PM me if you're not sorted soon, just up the road really.

OMG what the hell were VW talking about!!!

Just had a mechanic come round to have a look at my car to check out the oil in the spark plugs problem. Well the mechanic took the spark plugs out and there was no oil at all on the spark plugs or in the hole the they sit in!

He also did a compression test and he said the results were perfect and that it sounds like VW were trying to rip me off!

So the problem is just with the injectors, which im getting sorted at mates rates for £50 for the labour and then the cost of the injector itself. Thats a weight off my shoulders!!!

once fixed get it on vcds (make sure all is clear) then write a strong worded letter to the stealers.

Yea i'm definately gonna write to them!

Got the car booked in for Friday to have the injectors sorted but i've just realised I need to get the car down there. I know people say don't drive the car with a misfire, but if I drive very slowly and carefully should it be ok? Its about 6 miles from my house.

If your not sorted with a GOOD garage yet try APS in Brackley (Northampton area) all ex VW, Audi & Porsche guys and really know their stuff. And I believe they've won the Audi Driver Independent Service provider for England for the last 6 years in a row..............................can't be a bad advert can it  :happy2:

I'd love to be able to take it that far but i've been advised not to drive the car at all. Apparently with a misfire I could get fuel into the exhaust and break the cat. So this has become a really difficult situation.

Like an idiot I booked the car in for Friday at a garage 6 miles away but now im thinking hmmm how am I gonna get it there. So im gonna ring em tomorrow and hope that they can collect it somehow.

Will this ever get sorted? LOL

Called the garage I got the car from originally and they agreed to do the labour for free as long as I pay for the part as the car is 1 month out of warranty. Took it in last wednesday, called them Friday and they had not even looked at it as they are doing the work inbetween other jobs. Called Monday just gone and was told they have the injector and car will be done Tuesday (Today). Called today and was told they havent done the work and it would be Thursday that the car would be ready. They also said they don't think its the injector and that they want to have a proper look at the car as they think it could even be the air mass sensor or lamber sensor or O Rings?? even though I told them there was a misfire on cylinder 3 and that fault showed on 2 of them computer things that you plug into the car, something that the garage had not even done yet after having my car for 6 days!

So the mechanic has now told me that the car 'should' be done by Thursday. So are labmer sensor, airmass sensor or O rings possible with the problem I have??

I have been without a car now for nearly 2 weeks. Really pi**ed off!

Unfortuanllty mate its how main dealers work.

I had a constant missfire on my car and i complained loads and i mean loads (TFSI Mike knows what i have been through)
Dealers have a set procedure to investigate issues , and will not deviate from it.
even though your injector probably is the issue , i would think that because they are paying the labour , they are probably trying to look at parts they can remove and try easily before getting into the time comsuming things like removing your intake manifold to replace your injector.

Incidently missfires and injector issues on cylinder 3 are very common.

By the way my issue turned out to be the timing being incorrectly set for over 3 years , even though i was told that my car wouldnt even run if the timing was out.

There is a lot to be gained from reading these forums and learning from peoples experiences , and a good independant specialist is worth 10 main dealers any time !
good luck mate keep us posted.

If the fault was reported to the garage whilst under the warranty period and the issue has not been fixed. You are not liable for any costs involved in fixing it, as they are still bound to honour the warranty. I would argue with the garage about it.

I had a cylinder 2 misfire after going K04. After swapping plugs and coils round I bought and fitted a new injector which worked a treat. I think gererally if you swap plugs and coils round and still get the misfire it's often the injector.

Well yes I did report the fault when under warranty but I assumed it would be the coil packs and I noticed there was a recall on my golf for the coil packs. By the time i got this sorted it was out of warranty. They agreed to do the work for free if I pay for the part but I agreed to it as I didn't want to argue.

I called garage again today and he said he unplugged the air mass meter and the car ran perfect and misfire had gone. So he said that is causing the problem and has ordered one from vw and car will be done tomorrow. The thing is I've looked on multiple forums and everyone says the same and that's it can't be an air mass meter problem if there is a single cylinder misfire! It would be multiple or random.

I really don't know wat to do because I can't really tell him he's wrong. Only thing I can do is pick the car up and test it. I'm gonna make sure I tell them though that if the problem persists I want refunding for the meter as that obviously hasn't fixed the misfire!

And so it bloody continues...

Stick with it  :happy2: When its running perfectly she'll hit the sweet spot  :driver:  Have you tried calling UK VW Customer service for extra advice/help? Worth a call. Hope you get it sorted.

Well my car is not with vw at the min. They wanted £600 just to look at it!! Lol

I bought my car from a place called a47 motors in Leicester and they have the car now.
Can I still call vw customer service for advice still?

Im sure its worth a call either way. They were very helpful when I had my rust seen to and cambelt done under warranty, when the dealer clearly wasnt going to help at all but bend me over, take my money and not offer a reach around  :chicken:.  :scared: Be persistent, tell them youre not very happy and will not be parting with any money. The issues were addressed whilst under warranty, if i recall correctly.
