Without any other mods-- what does a decat do --also does insurance company have to be notified

Noise and maybe a few hp but nothing to go telling your friends about.

If you was going for the full works then yeah do it.

Decat will give you significant gains when coupled with the correct map.

I'm not sure what car you have but if you get a decat you can run stage 2 software.

So... If you went stage 2 with a decat....

GTI ~260-270bhp
ED30 ~ 300-320bhp

Also be aware that you more than likely fail your MOT with a decat.

And yes you would have to notify you insurance company... :happy2:

I will go for the full works but I budgeted to only spend about 300/month on upgrading so was hoping to do it bit by bit  would it be better for me to get a sports  cat down pipe first or a stage one remap ---by the way I have a vw golf 140 tdi 2006

If you are diesel you can fit a decat as they only do smoke tests on the MOT.

Which should I do first exhaust or remap?

Exhaust then remap. Else you will pay for the remap then pay again to get the map altered to take into account the exhaust.

The cat is the most restrictive part of your exhaust, you will get decent gains off removing it and a map. :)

I dont get the way people fit just a cat back system, bit pointless when all the restrictive'ness is in the downpipe.
