Title: What would you replace your Edition 30 with?
Post by: George on June 22, 2012, 08:49:18 pm
Hi all,

If you were looking to upgrade from your Edition 30 with a 15-20k budget what would you choose?

I think there are two paths, either

Golf R (when prices drop), Audi S3, Focus RS

or

Mitsubishi Evo / Subaru Impreza STI & a daily sensible car

What would you do?

I'm leaning towards a nicely specced mk6 gti to replace mine when the time comes  :happy2:

If I had that sort of budget it would be a remapped Golf R or a Focus RS MP350 Mountune. I drove the Ford, it was hilarious. I was grinning for hours afterwards.

This will be my last  fast bus. If I had to sell, it would be both the Hyundai i10 and ed30 trade up for some hi spec family all rounder like a VW Tiguan with DSG or the Hyundai ix35 tourer

Could you go to a K03 engine after owning a Edition 30 though?

Wish I could afford an Edition 30! But probably an R if I had to choose as I see it as the best of a GTI and an R32 combined - that's just me and my brand loyalty I suspect!

Would sell body parts for a tuned 2.5tfsi however, now a family man I'm lucky to still have my tuned Cupra

I was always happy with the performance of my K03s MKV GTi when at stage 1 and likewise with a MK6 GTi with the IHI turbo that I had a blast in, so yeah I could go back as it were
To be honest I very rarely use the extra legs that the K04 gives at the top end other than on track so don't think i'd feel I was missing out too often..

Nothing a decat and stage 2 wouldn't sort out. ~270-280, and less laggy than ko4.

Personally I'm gonna keep the ed30 for as long as I can because I can't afford anything better. :-) I don't suppose it's a bad car to be 'stuck' with.

There is really nothing I'd swap mine for at the minute... The performance, 31mpg, 5 doors, cheap to service, comfort, the sound... you woul dhave to go £20+k to get anywhere close...

Yeah a lightly modded 'regular' GTi is still a cracking drive and more than ample for UK roads imo  :happy2:

I'm sort of in the same place as you with my '30 but after nearly 4 years I'm struggling to shake the new car itch, fancying a Mk6 gti with a couple of choice mods as there's some great choice out there in the £16k bracket..

i went for the FRS after my Gti George and a year on im still loving it,  recently had the mp350 and exhaust and the sound is        only slight minus points are the mpg and the ride is a little more harsh due to the 19`s

The problem VAG have now is that the GTI/vRS etc are now woefully underpowered compared to the competition.

GTi 207ps
vRS 207ps
Ed30 230ps

to be comparable or faster performance wise you either need a Golf R, Scirocco R, Cupra R or S3, but at that point you are paying ALOT more money for that extra performance.

New Focus ST 250ps.
Focus RS 300ps with a proper LSD.
Meganne RS 250ps with a proper LSD.
Astra VXR 280ps with a proper LSD.

VAG need to increase the lower VAG hot hatch outputs to around 240-250hp imo, then up the R branded models to the 300hp region.

Is there a new 2.0 planned for the VAG range?  They are surely not going to continue using the K04 TFSI in the higher output VAGs?  Maybe they will start development of the K04 TSI unit instead!!

All the reviews ive read of this new Astra VXR pretty much say its awesome.  None of the flaws of the previous car.

I replaced mine with a diesel due to doing lots of mileage  :scared: ...... then missed owning a hot hatch and bought a low mileage 2008 Megane R26.  Its stock at the moment, but I might go to RS Tuning for Stage 1, about 255-260bhp

the new S3 will apparently use a tuned version of the EA888 engine. power apparently only goes up by a few bhp to the 280 mark, but it has the new trick valves from the A4/A5 EA888 2.0T, and that remaps to add +95bhp at Stage 1

so, all things being equal, you could see a Stage 2 S3 knocking on the door of 400bhp
Title: Re: What would you replace your Edition 30 with?
Post by: Janner_Sy on June 23, 2012, 10:31:53 am
A different turbo then surely, as the EA888 maps to about 300hp at stage 2 doesnt it?  How much difference do these valves make?  Ive not even heard of these changes yet.

Also just because a remap adds =95 hp with stage 1 on the A4 it doesnt mean it would do that to the S3.

ie ed30 Golf with 230hp remaps to the same figures as an S3 with the same engine running a higher tune.  Ed30 -70Hp gain, S3 - 40hp gain.

I am buying the Golf R  but no way is the ED30 going  I will run both. I was waiting for a Ultra low miles 3 door steel grey ed30 but after around a year of looking have decided the only MK6 id consider would be the R as I really don't like the front bumper and rear pipes on the ED35 the brakes look lost with the 19" option , I have got fed up waiting for the right R to come along and after it was pointed out the last Rs are going through this August and final day for a factory order was 13TH June ,I pulled the trigger and ordered mine and through good luck sold my PX car last weekend ,just the long wait now, I was advised at order 20 weeks plus due to a lack off DSG units , This Thursday was told it had come forward to being built wc 6 Aug so It would arrive in the UK for Sept.

3 Door DSG Golf R

Steel Grey
19" Talladegas
Cruise Control
Storage pack
Colour Hi line
Dynaudio Pack
Lux pack
RNS-510 with 6 cd option
Rear Camera
Front & Rear Parking Sensors
3 Year service pack

I dont think the power should be a reflection on the quality of the car and is not the main selling point for me. I presume VW could make the next GTI pump out 300BHP if they cut costs and reduced  the quality of the interior for example.

My GF drives a Corsa - same age as my ED30 and the interior is plain awful. Her brother drives an astra of the same age - again, awful interior. Cheap and nasty feel to everything.

VW and to a degree Audi dont need headline grabbing power levels to sell their cars, the  renowned quality does that...

same turbo as far as i'm aware - but if you look at Revo's site it says +95bhp on the longitudinal EA888 2.0Ts. the only major change i'm aware of is the valves

Also just because a remap adds =95 hp with stage 1 on the A4 it doesnt mean it would do that to the S3.

agreed, hence why i said "all things being equal". we won't really have an answer until the S3 is released early next year

For me I think would have to be -

RS3
A45 AMG

I dont think the M135i looks as good as the above as an all round package but would certainly test all three

or if it is feasible the new RS4 Avant.

my stage 2+ ed30 is the lowest powered car i have had in 5 years but its the best car i have owned, you cant drive flat out everywere ( i try ) and the car has to be able work well in your day to day life. i was going to buy a focus rs and was given a car for 4 days and while it would be more fun at the track, the 19s paired with those seats made life hard

Personally I hope VW aren't sucked in to trying to compete on a number.  Power is only meaningful if you can put it down.  Do I want a car that I can drive and enjoy or do I want a number I can quote down the pub ?

I think the blue doesnt help with the chavvy look.  A more neutral colour like black would help alot i think.

Like you say proper brakes(2 piece as well), awesome recaro seats, a mechanical diff, plenty of power, adjustable suspension settings, a 100,000 mile warranty......theres not alot to pick a fault on here other than its a vauxhall.

You cant deny it, they have really upped their game and look like they are directly targeting the Renault Meganne for the hot hatch title.

From what i have read the Corsa VXR Nurburgring edition is quicker than the Clio RS200 as well.

I hated the previous Astra VXR, but im definitely going to be taking one of these for a test drive wheni get home.  Might even see if i can find a megane RS to drive the same day for a comparison.

I genuinely have had a headache for over a year on replacing the GTI. I think I'm forced into a diesel bus purchase next with property commitments, so the A3 Black Ed tdi, MK6 GTD and e92 325d remain on the list  :chicken:

Still yet to be won over by the MK6 in general, but a 3door GTD makes most sense coming from a MK5 perhaps?  :stupid:

Count me in on that. I'm not as seriously afflicted as Deako as I too can usually last a year. I found that by modding the sh!t out of cars I can last up to 3 yrs and although it affects my wallet it is better than buying a new car every year and losing that way. The Polo may well make it to 2 years, but my wife isn't holding her breath in the hope I do!

Boosted my savings a little and so I have about £40k including trade-in for the next project. I'm thinking £25k Golf .:R and £15k mods....thoughts anyone?

I lasted 4 months with a Mk5 GTI. 9 months with an Ibiza FR TDI (mainly because of commuting) 11 months with the Clio 200, 3 months with the Scirocco (but it was a crap example) and I've had the Polo GTI for 5 months.

To be honest, as much as I'd love a Roccco/Golf R at the moment. My main reasons for wanting to change are a hankering for a T4 camper for holidays away with our 2 dogs and also an itch for an older car that I can modify the nuts off again. Like another Mk1/2 Golf.

Start from a shell and fit it to a 2.5 TT-RS engine and box, custom fitting 4WD running gear and Lambo interior.

I think the 2.5 lump would be overkill in the Mk2 chassis, unless all you care about is straight lines.

A nice K04 Ed30 conversion would be fantastic. There is a great vid on YouTube with a white Mk2 running full Mk5 dash, RNS510, climate etc. Full loom. It's immense.

Hopefully before the edition 50 comes out!

I'm leaning towards a nicely specced mk6 gti to replace mine when the time comes  :happy2:

Is a Bavarian replacement no longer on the list Steve?
I genuinely have had a headache for over a year on replacing the GTI. I think I'm forced into a diesel bus purchase next with property commitments, so the A3 Black Ed tdi, MK6 GTD and e92 325d remain on the list  :chicken:

Still yet to be won over by the MK6 in general, but a 3door GTD makes most sense coming from a MK5 perhaps?  :stupid:

Not ruling out a Bavarian barge of some kind completely Pete, but my short list was either a 135i or 123d coupe and they are out now as our circumstances may well change in the near future and ideally looking for a Golf sized hatch again

Having the ed30 and it being such a good car is causing me a headache finding something to fill its boots tbh! BMW wise it would be between a 330/5d or 335i saloon but leaning to something i'm more familiar with along the lines of a MK6 GTi / Audi S3 / Octy Vrs at the moment..

I have absolutely no idea, have not had the ED30 long enough yet. Possibly carbon grey golf R would be nice when they drop in value enough.

Boosted my savings a little and so I have about £40k including trade-in for the next project. I'm thinking £25k Golf .:R and £15k mods....thoughts anyone?

just out of interest - why wouldn't you just buy an RS3? or a TT-RS for fun, and a diesel Mk5 for daily duties?

I refer you to E30DOM's reply. Thought about doing a mad, bad MKII project myself.

It has it's own website. The white one? With working convenience & canbus. Cornering fogs, comming home lights etc, not forgetting the engine!  :notworthy:

John

I get the idea with your projects that you like to push the boundries and try new things.

big power S3s have been done to death.  Big power Golf R's are already knocking about. At the end of the day its still the same old mk5 chassis, with the same old 2.0TFSi engine

Ive not read of any big powered RS3s just yet.

Its got a much better chassis and AWD setup as standard from what i gather, plus with the awesome engine to boot.  Wouldnt that be a much better starting point for something crazy?

When is the new S3 out?

When is the new S3 out?

early 2013 i'd imagine - barely disguised mules have already been seen at the Nurburgring and the A3 launch has already happened so it won't be long

Is it a new platform/new engine?

Yup. Only a marginal power increase, though.

Yup. Only a marginal power increase, though.

the question is will it be equally as tunable!!

Yup. Only a marginal power increase, though.

the question is will it be equally as tunable!!

i've used this example before, and whilst it is basically conjecture i'm happy to run with it again: the new S3 will have a more powerful version of the EA888 engine found in the A4/A5/latest TT with the trick valves.

the 208bhp version of that engine tunes to 305bhp at Stage 1 (according to Revo). this engine uses the same turbo as the Mk6 GTI - so would appear to be a very tunable lump.

one assumes that the new S3 will have similar engine modifications as the current S3 does over the GTI (including a bigger turbo)

so if the IHI can be remapped to 305bhp at stage 1, imagine what a big turbo version could do :driver:. potentially could be looking at a 380bhp Stage 1 S3  :notworthy:

obviously we'll have to wait until its released to be sure - but i think the outlook is favourable

rely cant afford a golf R yet but fancy changing the ED30 before the arse falls out of the mk5 value

I'd argue it already has. GTIs and Edition 30s are going for next to nothing these days.

i dont think its that bad, a decent low millage edition 30 is still worth £11k-12K.

go look at a astr vxr or focus st from the same year and see things aint to bad for us  :happy2:
