Title: Quick spacer and bolt question.
Post by: keano on July 03, 2012, 10:11:19 pm
Hi guys,

Just a quick one. I've seriously confused myself. Ps. If I had the car on my possession I'd check myself  :innocent:

Now after my recent wheel falling off situation I'll be running proper 5mm spacers. Now, what size bolt thread length will I need? My "mechanic" suggested 50mm!?!?!??!

What is the world coming to? Please someone help.

Essentially what I'm asking is... What is the standard bolt length? And do I just add 5mm lol?

I think the thread length on a OEM bolt is 45mm

Oem bolts are M14 x 1.5 and 27mm long i think. ( not sure ) obviously you need bolts at least 5mm longer.  :rolleye: what you need to check is the seating, cant remember if you have now got aftermarket wheels on but most aftermarket wheels have a different seat, one bolt type is a radius seat and the other has a 60degree taper, cant remember which one is the OEM fitting either.
sorry not much help it,s been a while since i was playing with wheels.  :ashamed:

Don't feel like you have to go for a bolt that closely matches the standard size, plus the size of the spacer. There is quite a lot of give. For instance I'm using 50mm bolts with 10mm spacers, so in effect they're 13.3mm longer than they really need to be.

If I run 50mm with a 5mm spacer. Could they be TOO big? :popcornsoda: as the gf often tells me!  :chicken:

There is a possibility if they are too long that they can protrude the rear of the hub and foul the ABS ring iirc, i'd go with 40/41mm depending on which you can get easier as they will be fine for 5/10/15mm spacers
