Hi Neil
Yes the 2 cables you bought are correct.
If you get a version A,B or C. You could put on custom firmware which will prevent battery drain.
If however in the future you wish to upgrade to a newer firmware with newer features then u will need to upgrade your canbus gateway which is around the region of £100.
Custom firmware will do you good at the moment to be honest.
If you get a version D or above I believe the screen changes to an LED screen. And with a D unit you will need a canbus upgrade.
Hope that helps.

BTW : rns 510 is the best mod on my car. In sure you will love it!
-
It is the firmware that causes the battery drain and only in cars with below a K revision Gateway (which yours will have)
You can get a new gateway for about £85 on eGay which will solve any issues like that. I would try and get at least an LED Screen C version as they can be had quite reasonably.

Thankyou very much for the replies.
So how do i go about getting the custom firmware ? Is that available on ebay ?
Thanks
Neil

Vrscarl: i notice you have a thread about the different firmware if any of them apply to what i need please could you put the correct link on this thread so as i can download it please.
Thanks

Neil,
If you follow the firmware tutorial thread I did that is stickied as the first post in the Satnav section everything you need is in there. :happy2:

Thanks carl, please correct me if im wrong but it seems i need the 398x firmware if i get a c version unit ? i think i only need it to stop the battery drain as my car is old.
Thanks

You would need custom firmware either one of the 3 modified by Josi.
3800
2760
1300
As long as its the modified one then it's ok

Sorry who is josi and the numbers dont really mean alot to me?
Im used to messing around with a mk1 golf without a radio , not fairly new cars sorry im not the best when it comes to this kind of stuff

the numbers i mentioned are firmware versions. ive tried the modified 2760 and works perfectly.no battery drain.
not used 3800 modified yet.

Please do not post duff information. It helps if the facts are confirmed first!
The modified firmwares are NOT battery drain modified. They are modified to work with any unit be it a Skoda or VW unit so you don't get issues with MFSW etc.
You require the can gateway fix to be applied after installing the 276X firmware.
Neil,
Follow the tutorial i did. Install the 276X firmware first then put the Old can-gateway fix on after that. If you get any issues give me a shout. :happy2:
-
carl what is the can gateway fix?
ive always installed 2760 modified by josi to prevent battery drain and never applied anything else after that. done this on around 8 cars in the past few months with no problems
cheers

The Can-Gateway fix replaces the VUCI file with one from 1200 firmware which is the latest one that doesn't cause battery drain.
You won't get battery drain unless you have a below K rev gateway. I have done probably triple figure cars either supplying or updating personally and all the pre Mar 2007 cars i have had to apply the battery fix to stop battery drain.
If the car is driven on fairly long journeys each day it may not manifest itself for a while as it will take a good 3-4 days doing short journeys with a good battery for it to drain. 48hrs stood still is common for it to occur.
What i have found is that if you do get battery drain you end up needing a new battery. I had it due to an unrelated fault and needed a new battery

I had battery drain when I first installed the RNS510 in to my 2005 GTi.
Installed a 27xx modified firmware from Josi, and drain sorted.
Just my 2 pence worth

No need to get mad
Originally there was a 272x firmware that Josi modified to fix battery drain.
However now it is just the VUCI File swap so that it will work with most of the newer firmwares. Otherwise you were stuck at 272x until you got a newer gateway.

I've got a B unit and was running modified 2760. Upgraded canbus and firmware to 3810. The unit seems more responsive but apart from that are there any other new features? Still looks same apart from the startup logo

The main changes are
Voice control, however you do need to wire in a seperate mic for this. I have it and hardly use it as it is quite slow. Earlier versions had it but it was improved from 38XX onwards.
When you hold setup for 30 secs you get the FM, AM and Version Info menu's. Version info gives you map version, hw and sw versions
New style compass
New POI which you can load from SD Card
Third partition for the POI's, Music partition becomes 15gb unless you have one of the newer versions which has a 40gb HDD like i do.
Stability improvements
Faster startup over 2XXX firmwares
Display optical parking and rear view camera at same time
Display climatronic control if approriate climatronic fitted
Excluded roads in route options menu
Larger RVC screen with transparent menus at the side
That's about it off the top of my head.

I was thinking of upgrading to version 3810 so that I can add POI (cameras) via memory card
With version 27xx I have to burn a new DVD with modified maps to update POI,s
