Title: Standard exhaust minus centre silencer
Post by: Aparoon on May 27, 2009, 11:32:40 am
Just wondering if anybody has replaced the centre silencer with a straight through pipe to make the standard exhaust a bit louder? Would this work or would it end up sounding pants?

Ive listened to a few clips on youtube but cant really get a true idea of the sound.

It sounds good..

Lots of the guys in the states do it..

This vid gives a pretty good idea of the sound! (make sure you listen in HQ)

And this is with a 3" de cat down pipe with the standard cat-bac + resonator removed

Hope that helps you out a little..

Jonny

I wish I had an exhaust that quiet

When I had just the cat-back, it was absolutely fine, so I can't see the VW one being any different - just a little fruitier towards the top end. Ask Beddie what its like now...

Thanks for the clips they sound good, i spoke with pipewerx and they said about £80 so its gotta be worth a try what you think??

I had a decat and non resonated milltek on my mkiv and it sounded awesome just a little too loud at times for my liking!

£80 seems a lot, but probably going to struggle to get it for much less..

I think its worth a go yep!

I was considering this as its much cheaper than a system. Worried it sounds a little chavvy though?

Im not sure to be honest, dont know what the diameter is on the ed30 either, i thought i'd read somewhere that it was slightly larger than the standard gti?

The ED30 and GTI exhaust are exactly the same @ 2.5inch.. Dont know who started that rumor

The standard system is mild steel yep

Think there is a DIY post on the mkvs forum that has all the detail on doing this mod.

i have a 3" downpipe and de cat with standard system and it sounds nice, not loud, quite raspy, some times pops, i am going to get a 3" system all the way back without the silencers, get quite a lot of waste gate chatter as well, tuttutututuuuuuuu

its a e bay one for £159, exactly the same as on you would pay £500 for but a lot cheaper, is great as well!!!! the welds are spot on !!! and the metal they use isnt to bad!!! ideal for the k03/k04 turbo's

^^^^
The point about Milltek is that it's primarily a tested performance exhaust and also designed not to sound like a boy-racer. It's sophisticated at lower revs and comes to life with the revs. Much more preferable not to attract too much of the wrong kind of attention. IMO.

My favourite video (one of the first R32 ones i watched of the mk5 that made me want one!)

Here we go

Does sound great! Remember its has the added effect of a 3.0 engine though!
