Hi all,
I have owned my GTi for a little over 12 months now. I have been having issues over the last 5 months with the gearbox. These issues appear to be getting more regular.
It seems to jump out of gear is the only way to describe it. :scared:
Until this evening it appeared to be only doing it when in "m" or "s" mode particularly in 1nd or 2nd. The car suddenly loses power and revs. :surprised: The gear indication down the right hand side of the midline display flashes. I have to then place the selector back into "D" when it then behaves.
I am really concerned its the dreaded mechtronics unit..... or however its spelt.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Car is on a late 57 plate (September)...... been fully serviced including DSG service at 44k car now has just under 60k on it. Car is looked after also! :happy2:

from the description im 86.5% sure its your mechtronics.
In your position i would do a dsg reset (or find someone close who and do it for you) see how it goes.
If its still the same approach VW and i believe most people have got a 50% payout towards the work providing you have fvwsh and dsg services in the correct place.

Would have to agree with the above, particularly with the gear selection flashing.
You have any form of warranty? Providing you have FVWSH and dsg box serviced within the timescale you should receive some goodwill.

You should get the Mechatronics replaced FOC for that year of car. It was a known issue which the Americans complained about, and got them all replaced FOC including a 10yr warranty. I'll dig out the info you need to go in armed with but you will need to jump through some hoops.
Take the car to a VW dealer to get them to look at it. This way you have the fault logged. You may have to get a reset and oil change done to jump through a few hoops but if you go in armed with the info I'll post in a minute then they will more than likely do it FOC.
Your only stumbling block might be that the DSG service was done at 44k and they state at 40k. But if they argue over 4k miles they will just be trying to get out of paying.

Gutted no body mentioned this to me, I part paid for mine to be done so wasn't too bad (only paid £200 towards it as rest was covered by third party warranty)

This was the letter that VAG America sent to all owners of cars with DSG in 2008. This was posted by another member on a forum and knowing him personally I would be shocked if this wasn't genuine. :happy2:

Dear Volkswagen Owner,
Some customers have reported transmission performance issues under certain driving conditions. This was due to a potentially faulty component inside the transmission’s mechatronic unit, and affects a limited number of 2007- 2009 model year Volkswagen vehicles equipped with a DSG transmission. Our records show that your vehicle was built within the production date range of vehicles that may experience this issue.
What is the issue, and what can happen?
In some vehicles it is possible that a bushing inside the mechatronic unit has the potential to wear out prematurely, causing the clutches inside the transmission to operate less smoothly than before. As this wear occurs, the driver will begin to notice changes in the way the vehicle feels as the transmission shifts (jerking). While this change can become very pronounced, the vehicle remains safe to drive.
What will Volkswagen do?
We have sufficient part supply on-hand to replace the mechatronic unit in your vehicle. We will make loaner vehicles available at no charge.
What we would like you to do
If your vehicle is exhibiting the symptoms described in this letter, or at your convenience, please contact your dealer and arrange for an appointment to have the mechatronic unit replaced in your vehicle. When making your appointment, please provide your dealer with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) found at the top of this letter. Your dealer will pre-order the new mechatronic unit for your vehicle and have it on hand when you arrive for this service. This service will take about four hours and will be free of charge. Your dealer may need additional time for the preparation of the repair, as well as to accommodate their daily workshop schedule.
The warranty on the DSG transmission in your vehicle was extended to 10 years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first, from the vehicle’s original in-service date). Please refer to the letter we sent you previously for the warranty extension details.
Lease Vehicles
If you are the lessor and registered owner of the vehicle identified in this action, please forward this information immediately via first-class mail to the lessee within ten (10) days of receipt of this notification.

Surprise........... surprise the dealer has said no warranty is left on the car and they want to charge me £96 Inc VAT per hour to find out whats wrong. How would people recommend you tackle the dealers with regards to the letter above?

My experience of VAG dealerships has been less than favourable.

Simply print it out and take it with you, if the dealer does not budge approach a different one. If that fails contact VW Head Office.

If you get no joy contact VAG UK as they are generally more receptive. I know of a few people that have been in a similar situation to yours and have all had the work done FOC or with substantial goodwill.

South Hereford VW have agreed no questions asked to foot 100% of the mechtronics replacement. I only have to pay around £200 labour including the time they have already spent trying to solve the problem. They are not 100% sure this is the problem - They are thinking something could be wrong with the selector or something but would like to replace this first under warranty. Top Service!!!! :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

Thats great news, mine is currently sat at the dealers awaiting its new DSG unit today. They first of all tried the reset, worked for a short period, then it just was not smooth enough so, they said, 'we know th eunits fail, you know the units fail' so lets just get it changed. :drinking: They have stated that they fit on average 1 DSG unit per week under warranty replacement. :signLOL:
So glad you have yours sorted, you can now enjoy it :pomppomp:

mine is a 2006 so not covered in that letter, has anyone had theirs replaced before under warrenty?
Mine has (4 times now) taken itself out of gear even though its still in 'D' and on the dash the 'P R N D S' all flash, i have to restart the car or on some occasions put it in to manual shift and back to 'D' to get it working :(
