***FULL LIST OF BULBS ON PAGE 2. SEE POST 24***
Changed ALL my interior bulbs for superwhite LEDs yesterday.
On the exterior I changed the headlight bulbs (all 6) and the Numberplate bulbs.
Exterior.
*Headlight bulbs, MTEC H7 55w Super White HID Class Upgrade bulbs x4
*Sidelight bulbs, MTEC SUPER WHITE 501 W5W x2
*NumberPlate LEDs... CANBUS 6SMD 36mm Festoon CW5 LED x2
(these NEED to be the canbus error free type with built in resistors)
Interior. (the error free, more expensive bulbs are NOT needed inside) ****EDIT**** I seem to have a problem with footwell lights not staying on for long. I spoke to Matt and some Canbus error free LED's will be fitted in the morning. I will report back tmrw.
*Front Map Lights... 5SMD T10 501 W5W LED x2
*Rear Map Lights... 5SMD T10 501 W5W LED x3
*Glovebox Light… 5SMD T10 501 W5W LED x1
*Footwell Lights… 5SMD T10 501 W5W LED x2 ****EDIT**** Possibly changed to 8SMD T10 W5W LED x2
*Vanity/Sun Visor Lights… 36mm 6SMD Festoon CW5 LED x2
*Boot Light… 42mm 8SMD Festoon CW5 LED x1
I paid....
£28 for all the headlight bulbs.
£15 for all the interior and Numberplate LEDs... although I must add that I collected the LEDs (for £15) so I saved on postage costs, ebay fees, paypal fees.
Matt will do all 14 bulbs for us, including the Canbus (more expensive) bulbs for the footwells, and 1st class postage for £20 :pomppomp:
They look Super Cool. (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freesmileys.org%2Fsmileys%2Fsmiley-cool02.gif&hash=3745eee862d84a1d58bb78db26ee930d6876c583) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
I'll add some photo's later.
Here are the eBay links....
The Headlight bulbs came from Hids-Direct.
The other bulbs came from a guy called Matt in Lincoln (matt123t) He is a great guy and he sells some pretty cool DRLs too :happy2:
First are the Mtec head light bulbs....

Please mention my name (Carlo) if you buy the LEDs from Matt :happy2:
EDIT: I must say a BIG Thank you to Chris aka Thor. He's the one that originally helped me out with all the bulb codes etc. :notworthy:
-
Amazing, I've done all the exteriors (waiting for the LED number plate ones to arrive still though) this list will make it too easy not to get the interiors done too ;) cheers Carlo!
-
Great guide Carlo :happy2:
I have already changed all of mine apart from the boot light so will sort that.
-
great info!!
Ive already got number plate and sidelights done so just the interior for me.
do you have any pics of the interior lights working?
did you have any problems getting to the old bulbs or anything?
is it worth doing the puddle light?
Thanks
Rich
-
Pics or GTFO!! :P :P
-
Iv got the mtec ones. They are great
-
Any night pics fella ?
-
How bright are the interior super white LED's Carlo? I've heard that they are BRIGHT! Keep meaning to do this, cheers for all the info. Does matt123t sell the Interior LED's as an "all in one" kit for the mk5 or just ask him for for the individual ones? Sorry for all the question.
Cheers :drinking:
-
I'll make sure to take a load of photo's tonight :happy2:
Rich….I couldn't really say about the puddle lights cos I don't have em mate :ashamed: (although Ive seen a set which look amazing - I'll find the link)
The only one which seemed a bugger to get out was the drivers footwell light. :fighting:
I ended up removing the 2 torx screws and dropping the panel (this will all make sense once you have a look at it, and it only takes 1min to do).
MC71….Yes they are very bright, but they aint gonna blind you
I could ask Matt if he will do another listing with all the Interior LED's and the Numberplate LED's.
If not its easy enough to add the 14 bulbs to basket and pay all at once. :happy2:
-
^^^^ cheers for the info Carlo. :drinking:
Doing a single "all in one" kit would be great for lazy buggers like me!!!
If we drop your name when ordering from his eBay shop is there a discount per chance? :happy2:
Cheers, Martin
-

I don't think so on the discount Martin. I think he may have a website (no ebay fees) but im not 100%.
I'll find out tomorrow :happy2:
-
^^^^ :popcornsoda:
Cheers fella!
-
Looking forward to headlight bulb pics. I've already done my interior bulbs....proper bright! Lol
-
Right, Ive been out and taken some pics!!!
Im going over to see Matt in the morning. I think the footwell lights might be canbus lights too. They don't seem to be staying on long enough.
Anyway all will be sorted in the morning. Matt seems to think the 8SMD Canbus LEDS will work. :happy2:
Also he told me a price of £20 including 1st class postage for the full set, inc the more expensive 8SMD Canbus LED's.
This includes 14 bulbs (not 9 or 11 like the other eBayers) :pomppomp:
*1Pk of 2 --- 6SMD 36mm Festoon LED's --- Numberplate. (Canbus error free).
*1Pk of 2 --- 6SMD 36mm Festoon LED's --- Sun Visor.
*1Pk of 2 --- 8SMD 42mm Festoon LED's --- Boot. (Only 1 needed but comes in 2pk)
*3Pks of 2 --- 5SMD 501 W5W LED's --- Front Map 2. Rear 3. Glovebox 1.
*1Pk of 2 --- 8SMD 501 W5W LED's --- Footwell. (Canbus error free).

Any tips for changing the glove box light and footwells? Had a nightmare with the metal casing the lights are enclosed in so just gave up in the end (done the rest though!).
-
Yes mate….
First prise down the plastic holder from left to right (if sat in front seat or facing the front of car)
Unclip the wire. (press the locking tabs and pull - easy)
With the unit in your hand, use a small flat blade screwdriver, and lift/bend each metal lug a little. (don't worry, the metal is very bendy, and won't break)
The metal case will then easily lift off.
Remove the glass bulb and pop in the LED.
Now bend the lugs back on the metal piece, and clip it back onto the Plastic Unit.
Plug in the wire and pop back in the car.
:happy2:
First one takes a bit of time, but then they go real easy, and can be done quite fast.
-
Thanks for posting the pics Monte!!
on some of the interior photos, some of the lights appear a blue colour and some appear a brilliant white... Are all the bulbs bright white white and its just you're camera that makes some of them look blue?
thanks
Rich
-
excellent work! Might be good to make this a sticky to try and prevent the daily "what bulb to I need for here threads"
Is he going to put the offer for 14 bulbs up on his ebay?
-
on a similar note, i was recently doing research on changing the sidelights to LED's.
I came across a how to with photos on changing all the interior bulbs for LED's. I didn't need the guide at the time. Sods law, looking to change the interior bulbs and for the life of me, cannot find it!! been searching for hours! :fighting:
Can anybody put me out of my misery and post a link up??
thanks
Rich

Just a suggestion due to the interest on here. Maybe he makes himself a member and starts a thread in the for sale section for all 14 bulbs. That way we all know we're buying from the right guy with PayPal, with the right kit and he doesn't get eBay fees etc
As long as its not breaking any forum rules think it'd be a lot easier

Great idea, I'm sure he will be up for that!

Just the camera Rich, they are ALL White mate. I noticed tonight in the pitch black just how great they all look.
Awesome mod for £20 :happy2:excellent work! Might be good to make this a sticky to try and prevent the daily "what bulb to I need for here threads"
Is he going to put the offer for 14 bulbs up on his ebay?
Well I'll put superteds idea to Matt and see what he says!
I'll ask Boss Man SteveP too to make sure all is ok! :happy2:
Also I know I said 14 bulbs, but the full set is 13 bulbs, with 4 of them being the Canbus LEDs with resistors built in!
I bought 14 as I bought the bulbs in packs of 2.
Matt said he will provide the proper kit with all the correct bulbs!

***We have recently found out that some MK5's have an extra bulb in the front map light.
We think this could be just certain years of the TDI models that have 3 bulbs instead of 2, but please check.
If so you MUST inform Matt on your email, and order 1 extra 36mm Festoon LED.
Big thanks to Dodds-GTtdi for the info*** :happy2:

I don't know which LEDs to use for the front fogs, but if you want Super white ones try the MTEC HB4's :happy2:

Fitted mine today. They look awesome. But the real test is when it's dark. I hope the number plate ones are bright as I hoped. If not then I'll have to get the 18smd number plate bulbs which is like £25 on the bay.
Also I left my sun visors as standard for the moment. They seem to flicker and only remain on when the visor is at an awkward position. Need to look into it.
I'll post pics up tonight.
-
Ah sorry mate, thanks for the re-up though i appreciate it!!
this thread seems to have sorted a lot of people out!! :happy2:
-
Received a bag full of bulbs today, many thanks gents for this :happy2:
Sorry if it's a stupid question, but when you go to fit them is it obvious which is which???

Yeah it's obvious matey. Well sort of. All the little Glass wedge bulbs are replaced with the new white bulbs with 5 LEDs....Apart from the footwell bulbs. They need to be the Canbus type - slightly longer ones with 8 LEDs.
Also the Number plate and the sun visor bulbs are both 36mm festoons, but two of them will be Canbus ones with metal resistors on the back. They are for the number plates
-
Cheers Carlos :happy2:

fitted mine today, well happy with them to say the least!

Ebay thinks Matt is away til the 6th of August. So if anybody isnt getting replies to emails or ebay orders that might be why. I tried to order the full 14 bulb set on ebay but it seems the 6 SMD 36mm bulbs are sold out. Have emailed Matt and am awaiting a reply. Will let you all know how I get on. Obligatory pics will be included. :happy2:
-
Hi mate,
Matt is away till next Wednesday, so he should be fully stocked up when he gets back :happy2:
-
Yeah, he said he had run out of stock for the number plate ones. hopefully my set excluding the numberplate ones should be here soon and then the rest to follow.
bit excited!
-
He said he would email me when hes got the full set in again - then im going to buy it all together :D
-
Got a reply from Matt today. He's away til Tuesday but can post me out a set on Weds. :jumpmove:
I already have Canbus LEDs in my numberplate tho so probs don't need them...
-
How do u change fog bulbs is it bumper off job
-
Unclip, or unscrew, the fog grilles then you should be able to access the bulb and connector from there. Simple case of twisting the bulb out, disconnect the bolb and swap over.
Somebody might come along with some pics I hope.. :happy2:
-
Cheers

Found the front and centre the easiest

mine all arrived safely the other day.
Just need to pull my finger out and get it done!

Ok since fittIng these bulbs my car has gone flat twice!! Whats happening?'
-
That's worrying and strange I was thinking to do this mod !
But what's strange is that LED draw less power, maybe you have damaged a connector somewhere or one of the lights is not switching off.
Check all lights while the car is off !
-
yeah i really am scratching my head and so are a few of my mates.. it must be something I've done because everyone else's seems to be fine?! its either that or a weird coincidence.
all lights go on and off when they should.. so its not that they stay on over a long period of time. can using the wrong bulb type make my battery drain? I've switched the bulbs back round now so if the battery doesn't drain, it has to be something to do with the bulbs surely?
-
could it be that i somehow put the wrong bulb in somewhere?? really needs some help here :ashamed:
-
Just fitted a complete set bought from Matt on eBay, only problem is that after fitting the glove box and footwell lamps they have ALL STOPPED WORKING,anyone any ideas why ?
Also a slight gripe, the bulbs arrived and there are no model or type numbers on any of the packets ??? I know I have fitted the correct size as this is straight forward, could I of blown a main fuse, if so anyone with an idea which one to look at ?
cheers

Let us know mate. I cant see it being the LEDs. Like REE said, the LEDs draw far less power than the standard bulbs, and you seem to have fitted them right….and they seem to be working right
Have you changed anything else at all in the car thats electrical…..for instance an RNS510???
The RNS510 is a well known cause of battery drain with certain firmware versions etc.
Let me know tmrw now you have switched back to the glass bulbs

took my chances today at the post office depot and my parcel was there
fitted the mtec dipped lights today, looks awesome in the night.doing sidelights tommorrow which looks like a pain in the butt.

Hmmmm, definitely strange that they have all stopped working? :stupid: Could be a fuse??? Im not sure mate.
Lots of people have fitted these now and they are all SO pleased with the results. :pomppomp:
I can help you with the types of bulbs and where to put them though. Here's what they look like and where they go

Might have to look into getting these. Replaced a few exterior bulbs with brighter "no bulb error" bulbs and still get warnings on the dash. Having seen a set that works prior to buying takes all the hassle away!
-

I changed all the bulbs back apart from the front map because that required tools and so far have had no issues since.. I'm really confused. maybe it was just a really weird coincidence?? who knows! I'm going to try and put the LED bulbs back in and see if it happens again because then it is for sure that theres is and issue with my car and the bulbs.
I havnt changed my head unit, i have the MFD2.. not sure what model this is, it the one with the sat nav and non touch screen. my car is 05 plate so its an early model.
But yeah they look super cool aside all my problems, i really want to get them back in!
-
Samdem how about changing one at a time and serving what happens day by day. I know it's long but maybe you can track down which bulb is causing your battery to drain
-
yep, i think that is what i am going to do! i did have my boot open for a quite while but i don't think thats enough to drain the battery?? and then after we jump started it i drove for roughly half an hour down a motorway and when i woke up and went to drive of it was flat again. but since then its been fine!
-
ok so my battery went flat again last night after sitting in the car with the engine off and radio on for about half an hour. i only have the front LED lights in and yet the power still seems to be draining. im going to replace with all the glass bulbs today. and see what happens. maybe my battery has come to the end of its life after all this? any way to check if my battery is infact screwed?
-
Load test
A battery can seem to be all right when it isn't. This is because under normal operating conditions, it doesn't take much to start a car. All car batteries will read 12 volts DC when the ignition is off, even if they are in poor condition. They also have something called surface charge - the ability to produce enough amps to crank the engine momentarily before dying, even when their overall charge state is low. That's why a weak battery can start a car, and why you can often start a car after charging a dead battery for only a few minutes.
Battery condition can be measured with a device called a load tester:
www.amazon.com/Actron-CP7612-Battery-Load-Tester/dp/B0009XQUJI
This is a relatively simple device that can provide a low-resistance load to the battery that simulates the cranking load you would have with the starter. The one pictured above is rated at 100 amps. You connect the clips to the car battery with the ignition off and throw the switch at the bottom to simulate cranking the engine for 15 seconds. The meter measures the voltage drop during the testing interval. Professional mechanics use more sophisticated equipment, but something like this is fine for a do-it-yourselfer.
Maybe Halfords can do a free check, if they think they might sell you a new battery :happy2:
-
i see, cheers for the info mate.
i spoke to halfords and they said they can do a free health check on the battery. should i have a decent drive round first to get some charge in it before they do the check? or does the check just tell whether the battery has the life in it to hold charge?
i really dont want to fork out for a new battery, but in a way if it is the battery its good because it may mean that my problem could be over! really dissapointed bnecuase i love my car so much and this is the first time anythings ever gone wrong. maybe i shouldnt try fix what isnt broke in future :P

Hi Sam, thanks for the pm. I'm so glad you finally sorted it out with the battery and that you are happy with the LEDs mate.
I'm going to try and sort out all the remaining bulbs next :happy2:
There are another 12 to do

sam - what was the cause of the battery drain? I take it wasnt the LED's that caused this?

I keep looking at this thread
I have LED sidelights and when the headlights are on they are obviously different in colour to my headlights. What headlight bulbs match the colour of the LED sidelights ? Not that i drive it much at night , but like my car to look right :happy2:

12 more Bulbs?! what ones are they? are there bulbs in the reflectors when you open the doors?
i also found another bulb i need to change, when i take the keys out the ignition a light under the drivers wing mirror. some home i think im going to have to take the wing mirror housing off to find out what style of bulb this is!

Erm to be honest mate not all that sure, i think it was just my batteries time to go. it was the original battery from 05 so it must of been on its last legs!! when i got it tested by halfords it came up as a big fat 0%!!!

Well I've done the Headlights and fogs with MTEC bulbs, the interior and numberplate are all LEDs.....
So that leaves the rear clusters (x8 bulbs) the front indicators (x2)and the indicators in the wing mirrors (x2) :happy2:
The Rears have 6x P21W's and 2x H6W's
I'll have to investigate the front indicators tomorrow but I think it will be another 2x P21W's and 2x H6W's
I'll sort a list tmrw with Matt when he gets home.

Any idea about the light under the driverside mirror when u take the key out?

Any idea about the light under the driverside mirror when u take the key out?
They will be the puddle lights. Not sure which bulb they take as I don't have them but a quick search might reveal the answer.
EDIT:
The bulb is a 501 w5w, so you should be able to change to the same ones as the footwell lights (need to be canbus error free) :happy2:

are the sidelights in this kit same for the r32 xenon headlamp?

Okay, so I've fitted all my new LED's (except the reg plate 36mm CAN-BUS Festoons as I already have these) but I think I'm one bulbs short.
The list from the first page says:
*1Pk of 2 --- 6SMD 36mm Festoon LED's --- Numberplate. (Canbus error free).
Spare. Not used for number plate.
*1Pk of 2 --- 6SMD 36mm Festoon LED's --- Sun Visor.
I used.
*1Pk of 2 --- 8SMD 42mm Festoon LED's --- Boot. (Only 1 needed but comes in 2pk)
I used one for the boot. ONE SPARE
*3Pks of 2 --- 5SMD 501 W5W LED's --- Front Map 2. Rear 3. Glovebox 1.
Correct also. All bulbs used.
*1Pk of 2 --- 8SMD 501 W5W LED's --- Footwell. (Canbus error free).
Used as well.
However there's a 36mm festoon bulb in the centre of the front map. I had a spare couple of CAN-BUS 36mm's but thought I had a full kit? :stupid:
I'm not dissing Matt in anyway. The LEDs are fantastic and he posted them super fast. Thanks for that mate, much appreciated. Anybody else found themselves a bulb short?

Not there on my 2007 56 plate GTI.

Im not sure if the GTIs have that light in the centre, i thought that too... I have checked a few other GTI's 2007, 2008, just incase it was my model 2006, ...
Hope that helps!

Hmmm, I'll get a picture of it in the morning so folk's can see what they might have. Here's a wee snap of how the car looks like now:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fsandydodds%2FVW_Golf__GTTdi_140%2F7b9df832.jpg&hash=50e513feccd9f6e121ebb819ac9660ca0b32497f)
Or it would if I didn't blow the micro little 7.5amp fuse by shorting out the glove box light. I managed to close the circuit with the metal housing and bye bye interior lights. :-( looks like I'll be stopping in at my local VW or motor factor tomorrow morning. :-S

Ahhh right, sorry about that mate :ashamed:
Me and Matt just worked out the kit for my 2007 Ed30 GTi. Mine only has 2 LEDs in the front map light.
You've got 2x 36mm canbus festoons spare that was meant for the number plate, so one of those should fit in the front map light.
That photo looks Great Dodds :congrats: You can see just how white they are against the orange glow outside. :happy2:
I've edited the list to inform people that they need to check their car for the extra 36mm festoon.
Is it all GT-TDI's do you know? :popcornsoda:
-
Is the LED kit exactly same for Seat Leon 1p ??
-
Is the LED kit exactly same for Seat Leon 1p ??
Im not sure mate.
Just go round all the bulbs and check which type they are. They will be either,
Capless wedge bulbs (CWB)….
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.philips.com%2Fis%2Fimage%2FPhilipsConsumer%2F12821LLECOB2-IMS-global%3Fwid%3D430%26amp%3Bhei%3D430%26amp%3B%24jpglarge%24&hash=7ca32546219b9b226bf01ee3f963d1305041080f)

The Festoons on the Gti are all 36mm apart from the one in the Boot which is 42mm.
If yours are the same as the Gti there should be…
2 in the Front Map light (CWB)
3 in the Rear Map light (CWB)
2 in the Footwell lights (CWB)-Canbus.
1 in the Glovebox light (CWB)
2 in the Sun visor lights (FB)
1 in the Boot light (FB)
2 in the Numberplate lights (FB)-Canbus.
Let me know what type each bulb is and we can go from there. :happy2:

You've got 2x 36mm canbus festoons spare that was meant for the number plate, so one of those should fit in the front map light.
That photo looks Great Dodds :congrats: You can see just how white they are against the orange glow outside. :happy2:
I've edited the list to inform people that they need to check their car for the extra 36mm festoon.
Is it all GT-TDI's do you know? :popcornsoda:
I think mine has 3 in the front map light aswell (GT-TDI aswell), but if i also need the number plates would i also be 1 bulb short then??
-
does anyone elses footwell lights flash a few times just after starting the car?
Yeah mine does too. 4 quick flashes when you turn the key in the ignition. I tried to get a video of it last night but the flashes are too quick for the iPhone. :-S
-
does anyone elses footwell lights flash a few times just after starting the car?
Yes mine give a flicker, what causes that to happen?
:happy2: :happy2:
-
maybe just a surge when you turn it on. it may not of been enough power to set the regular bulbs off, but as LEDs use less power it maybe just enough to set them off? just a guess
-

[/quote]
i have 3 light front map to on my early GTI, i was one bulb short but just left the glove box one regular.
-
Got mine today all fitted just waited for day to turn to night...
Anyone know if the side lights in the r32 Xenons share the same bulb as the indicator as my sidelights look very very orange?
-
The sidelights on xenon equipped cars use the W5W type, I use 13 smd LED's in my sidelights
They have a very crisp white light instead of the yellow halogen bulb that is fitted as standard.
Sorry no pics
-
Just a mission to take bumper etc off!
-
Just a mission to take bumper etc off!
No need to take bumper off to replace bulbs
-
its too tight to get ure hands in
-
Agreed...it is very tight in there.i skinned all my knuckles And I.ve got skinny fingers :ashamed:
Have you got a friendly VW dealer who might help you without charging.
Or maybe someone on this forum who lives near you could help.
-
My side lights were the worst for me! Never again :signLOL:
-
my passenger side sidelight came off easy, however the driver side was a pain, took a lot of twisting and turning to loosen and pull it out.

I used my mates NWS ergonomic 45' long nosed pliers. He's a sparky so he has all sorts of pliers.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmakezineblog.files.wordpress.com%2F2012%2F01%2Fnws-ergo-grip-long-nose-pliers-hand-angle.jpg&hash=84f87bd55e4d0cbf39433b7e862abb49b57e7daa)
I know his pliers will be quite expensive though. I can also get the bulbs out easily with normal pliers.
Practice makes perfect!!!
Remember, just PULL straight back on the bulb holder. Do NOT Twist.
It gets easier every time.
-
Moving the charcoal canister out of the way makes the drivers side easier to do also.

Hi Guys.
O.K then stupid question time................................
Can the MTEC H7 55W super white HID bulbs be used on a ED30 with standard front lights and if so are they a straight replacement ?
neil.
-

bumper off jobbie to get it out tho, its too far gone with any sort of tool, ive tried them all, its past the reflector lens!

I think I'd attach a small magnet to a wire coat hanger and get it out through the hole :happy2:

Yes mate I have 2 sets of em in my standard ed30 headlights. Pictures are on one of the previous pages
-
Fitted all the interior LED's today and am well chuffed with their look. A lot easier to fit than I originally thought. Will be outside latter opening and closing doors, locking and unlocking, turning lights on and off, gives the neighbours something to watch if nothing else. :signLOL:
Cheers for arranging this mod Carlo. :happy2:
-
Ordered up my 2 sets on weds arrived this morning great service
Gues what I'l be doing today then lol
-
My foot well LEDs are not working it's not the bulbs though must be the housing going try a diff connector in there
-
Have you double checked you haven't got the LEDs in the wrong way around... ?
-
X2 some only work a certain way!
-
My foot well LEDs are not working it's not the bulbs though must be the housing going try a diff connector in there
You did use the canbus LEDs in the footwell didn't you?
As others have said, LEDs only work one way round
-
i bought hem off Matt here
I had canbus leds in them and they were working i am now using them for the sidelights so left them disconnected for a couple of days till the same leds arrived in the post!
Problem now is but there not comign on i then tested the same leds in the map light and they worked so that rules the leds being faulty
the footwell lighting are on them clip style connectors so i might try them in another location to actually see if the light housing is fecked such as the boot light then that will rule the housing out alternatively i have the door exit lights which use the same style connector so i may try them in the footwell just to check the wiring is ok
unless theres a fuse for the footlights otherwise am not sure whats up with them it cant be a coincidence that both sides have stopped working all i did was take the leds out of there and use them for the sidelights
any help ?
-
try the light in a different plug
The diode could be loose
The footwell lights are switched on by the CECM
-
managed to finally get round to installing the interior LED bulbs.
The only problem i found was that the glove box light would work with 5SMD 501 W5W LED's (the same ones as the map lights). Tried flipping them over, tried a known working LED bulb, nothing.
However, tried the bulb for the foot well (8SMD CANBUS W5W LED) and it works... anybody else have this issue?
Thanks
Rich
-
Mine did the same but I tapped/ banged the bulb holder from outside once in situe and it works now ave got issues with footwell lights even with halogens it ain't lighting up
-
forgot to mention, one of the red LED lights (the ones near next to the map reading lights hadnt worked since i bought the car. Taking the light unit apart and re-assembling somehow has got it working again! Bonus!
-
Someone help me with the bastwRdddd footwell light what is going on everything else is fineeeeeeeee
-
Received yesterday and fitted today, just waiting for complete darkness!
-
did anyone confirm the puddle lights were indeed 8SMD W5W LEDs?
-
I can't help matey, I don't have the puddle lights :sad1:
(well not those ones in the mirrors)
-
Fitted mine and my brothers the other days
Props to matt for putting the kit together
-
by the way... my 55 plate gti has 3 lights up front.
the headlining (with all lights etc) I picked up for my friend from a 07 golf only has 2 lights up front.
Strange.
-
I can't believe I missed this thread. Thanks very much for this guys , very helpful :happy2:
-
Paid for a set of these yesterday and Matt promptly whacked them in the post straight away. Delivery expected tommorrow. Can't wait, cheers Carlo! :happy2:
-
Can you just buy single bulbs rather than the kit? I need the glovebox and boot light as iv already got leds everywhere else!
-
Just send Matt an email mate and ask him. I'm sure he will help you out :happy2:
His email address is in this thread somewhere??? :ashamed:
-
went and picked my bulbs up this afternoon from matt. nice guy and knows his stuff.
spent the next few hours fitting them. pretty straight forward and looked really nice! however i got too 'relaxed' fitting the glovebox light and managed to blow the fuse so im yet to see the them properly in the dark :sad1:
although the number plate lights and footwells look awesome!
i did have a couple of problems. the glovebox light is the same fitting as the canbus footwells and the w5w style led's that also go in the reading lights dont fit?
also mines an 06 gt tdi and it had the 3rd light in the front, i needed a 3 led fastoon but managed to squeeze the spare 4 led in i had so all is well :)
all in all im mega happy with them and cant wait to get the fuse tomorrow and try them when it gets dark
-
Great stuff :happy2:
Are you in Lincoln then?
-
im in louth dude
-
Took delivery of the external bulbs as specified at the beginning of this post. The delivery was next day which was superb and i fitted them at the weekend. what a difference they make. thank you to Monte as i probably wouldn't have attempted picking out the correct bulbs for brightness etc. so thanks again.
DRL's here we come.........
I drive Fitz, a standard 5 door MK5 GTi with nice bright white lights!!!!
-
Great Stuff :happy2:
TBH I was in the same boat.
I quite fancied the idea of the LEDs but not knowing for sure which bulbs to buy, and then if they would work or cause errors, really put me off.
When Matt told me to come round to his LED Emporium  and try as many bulbs as needed till we find the correct ones, I was well pleased
BIG THANKS to MATT for helping me put this kit together. :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
Stick around mate, Fitz won't be standard for long
-
Sorry to resurrect this but have a qck question.
Bought the kit when first offered but not managed to fit as yet, 6 month old baby is all I'm gonna say!!
Anyway, I'm swapping the 5 door child friendly golf, for a 3 door, not so child friendly Scirocco coupe next week and want to know if these are a direct swap
-
^^^
You might not have all the same lights but I would assume that the bulbs should be fine in the scirocco.
-
Thanks.
Suppose it'll be a case of try and fit and see what happens :happy2:
-
I ordered a set of light lights for my car. After fitting them the warbling light come on saying that the bulbs are defective. Now both them are working so I'm not quite sure what the issue is.
Can anyone shed some light on this please?
-
Bought the pack off Matt, all installed and working. Had already done the rear reg plate and front footwells, but kept forgetting to sit down and order the others - much easier getting the pack!
-
Bought off Matt, arrived the next day and fitted, very happy and thanks again :)
-
just messaged matt for price of full set and also the puddle lighgts, in fact have asked him for 2 full sets as may as well have a spare set at these prices,,,,,,,, seems a brill deal :drinking:

Just come out to change my bulbs. Number plate ones are fine. Changed the boot one and now none of the interior lights work. Anyone know which is the fuse for interior lights. Also the led bulbs for the vanity mirrors are way too short. Anyone else had this?

Only 4mm, bend in the terminals a wee bit, worked fine with mine as I had the same problem. :happy2:
-
All fixed. The centre interior light (which not everyone has anyway) definitely isnt 36mm and i couldnt get it to fit at all and it just kept falling out even when i bent the connectors. So I squeezed the space 42mm one (from the boot) into that spot and its fine.
The vanity mirrors fitted the 36 mm ones ok after i bent the connectors.
The fuse has been replaced and all working ok now :)

Hi there,
Just came across this thread now.
How much would it cost for the full interior and exterior set?
Do these cause any warning lights?
And also im in ireland so how much is shipping?
Thanks, looking forward to your response!

Exterior ones as used by Carlo, MTEC's, about £30ish from eBay, he has put a link up in this thread. For the interior lights, contact Matt directly and as others have said he gives a fantastic service with quick delivery and per tests all his bulbs. The look of my car with these lights inside is uber cool.
Can't comment on the MTEC's as I have the Phillips Xteme bulbs .
:happy2:

Yep found mine needed to be bent a little bit, but there was plenty of give in the connectors to do it.

Anyone changing their lights to LED may want to consider getting a few extra 7.5 fuses simply so if you fuse the circuit when installing them you can just slot a new one in!
My car with the LEDs all fully installed. Makes a massive difference:

Just fitted a complete set bought from Matt on eBay, only problem is that after fitting the glove box and footwell lamps they have ALL STOPPED WORKING,anyone any ideas why ?
Also a slight gripe, the bulbs arrived and there are no model or type numbers on any of the packets ??? I know I have fitted the correct size as this is straight forward, could I of blown a main fuse, if so anyone with an idea which one to look at ?
cheers
Hmmmm, definitely strange that they have all stopped working? :stupid: Could be a fuse??? Im not sure mate.
Lots of people have fitted these now and they are all SO pleased with the results. :pomppomp:
I can help you with the types of bulbs and where to put them though. Here's what they look like and where they go

bulb no 8smd, does anyone know why I have 4 of these in my set when it says you need 2 on this posting ?
my set consists of 16 lights in total, have not fitted them yet but was just wondering why I have an extra set of the above.
also on the picture that particular bulb has the no 221 printed on it, mine has 151 printed on it ?
does this matter,,,
tahnk you
-
@scottm72
I have a few spare aswell from my LED install so i'd guess that is normal.
The other question - L went off matching bulbs to the pictures and nothing's gone wrong. If it matches the picture and you put the numberplate one in the numberplate bulb holder, for example, it should all work.
-
thanks johnmn I have written down all the places they go and I will put as instructed, how long did it take you to install them please.
I bought 2 complete sets as they where so cheap and just in case I ever need a spare but I should prob buy some spare fuses as someone else said,
can you buy a fuse kit, something that has all the different amps to make it a good spare set to keep ?
I think I will just install 1 at a time and then check it is working ok rather than the whole lot then they all don't work lol,, should I need to disconnect the battery for install do you think,
thanks

took me under an hour but I've done it a few times. Take your time and get some good quality trim tools, help save your plastic interior and stops you touching metal on metal
A fitting guide.....

Just get some generic blade fuses from everywhere and anywhere for a couple of quid. On eBay, Amazon, Halfords etc

installing them one at a time you'll know if they are working. Matt checks each bulb before he sends them out so tou know they WILL work. If it doesn't work, you've put it in the wrong way round or shorted a fuss by connecting metal parts, ie footwell and glovebox.
ok rather than the whole lot then they all don't work lol,, should I need to disconnect the battery for install do you think,
No need to disconnect battery
thanks

^^^^ 120!!!!!
Buy the lot, then sell them on in packs of ten to the unsuspecting. Happy days.

If you don't want 120 then pay almost the same for 10 elsewhere on ebay.
They were 60p cheaper when I bought them last week!

I know they are only fuses but how's the quality? Will probably get some to keep as spares.

Quite sturdy compared to the poundland types.
I have made a few sets up for other cars in the family to have in the glovebox for emergencies and still have about 70 left!
Apologies if my last post seemed a bit abrupt (walking and typing at Metro Centre where they barely get a signal nevermind 3G )

na to cheap lol, don't wanna tempt fate

I'll sell you two of every Amp rating for £12 then if that makes it more appealing?

Damn my number plate bulbs have stopped working . The left one flickers and then they both go off. Would I have to order a new set or any1 know what is wrong thanks .
-
^^^^ stick your original ones back in to see if its the LED that are failing. If they work fine then yes you need some more LED's.
-
this is the reason I bought 2 sets, as mc says just stick the old bulb in and see
-
thanks for that but by time i finishwork and get to check think it will be to late to get them delivered for tomorrow so might aswell order some more. how much is it just for the number plate bulbs ?

Pretty much answered by MC71. I just changed one by one. Battery connected. That way I knew everything worked - until I fused the circuit! Fuses have been mentioned above or you could pop to Halfords and buy some. As you say good to have. They are worth it and it didn't take massively long either!!
-
Well I have been meaning to do this for bloody ages now. Thanks to all on this thread for information and Matt the Bulb King, I have orderd the set for the interior.
Only pants thing is that I will have to wait till end of Feb to install them, as away with work!
Gives me something to look forward to at least...
Cheers...
-
Definitely gonna get round to getting a set next year
-
had mine for a month, still not fitted them yet, lazy me,,, just bought 100 pack of spare fuses from Halfords, 3w to 15w I think, good to have a spare set.

Well I emailed the Bulb King Matt, such a quick response, and posting the next day! So easy....
Also, whats the best upgrade for the standard headlight bulbs. Is it the H7s as mentioned on page 1, or are they only for the xeon headlights?
Cheers all...

Headlight options... H7 bulbs for both main beam and High beam. I recommend Phillips extreme 100%. There is a review on here somewhere. I find them very bright and 'snow' white compared to the yellow standard bosh bulbs ;)
-
I just fitted Halfords extreme bulbs, meant to be 120% brighter to my wifes mk4, they are crisp white and seem very good, well happy with them.
also they are on bogof just now, £29.99 for headlight and £19.99 for main beam,
pig to fit in mk4 though, 2 hours it took me :surprised:

@OLIRAT
I can definitely vouch for the Phillips Xtreme bulbs, they're very good. Not sure if they are any better than the bulbs listed by Monte as I've not tried those in my car although I do have them and will be running a comparison between a few sets come the new year (when it warms out outside) and doing a wee write up.
If you get the Phillips or Osrams then you can get them online from Powerbulps.com and use discount code ZXRCX111 for 10% off and a free set of sidelight bulbs as well. Code runs until the end of the year.
Keep your head down and stay safe out there fella! :happy2:
-
Many thanks for your support all of you.
All is going good out here at the moment thanks. Slight lack VWs knocking about the place! lol.. The good old lady at home is sending my Golf+ mags out, thats the main thing. And hoping she aint driving the Golf tooo much!! She has her own lupo. (sadly not the gti, which i wanted for her!)
Cheers on the advice MC71. Best get another order sorted then! Will try them out. Look forward to reading your review.

Carlo seniore,
Don't suppose you've any information as to whether these have been tried with a MY2010+ or later VW/Audi CEC or BCM do you? I need a spare set for my LED OEM+ ones as they're not quite seated properly all the time.
Thanks guv :happy2:

Ciao Pietro
Not sure matey??? :ashamed:
If you email Matt I'm 99% sure he will know. He deals with a lot of the Audi lads (he has an Audi himself) so there is a good chance if these aren't the ones you want, he will have them. :happy2:

looks well good, need to get mine fitted lol, been sitting on my table for a month just waiting to go in :ashamed:

Just received a set of these, brilliant service :happy2:
One question though, I've just noticed whilst driving that all the map lights have a faint glow from the little squares on the side of the bulb but go out when lock the car.
It doesn't really bother me but I was just wondering if this is normal?
-
Totally normal, the circuit draws the smallest amount of current through and lights the leds albeit dimly...
It wouldn;t be enough to light a normal bulb, but as led require less juice to power up, you get a faint light...

Is he on ASN.net too do you know at all?
I think in truth it's very unlikely these will clear a 2010+ CECM car (they have an extremely sensitive canbus, as I've found from my own and others' experience) but worth checking).
My £26 worth of OEM+ 18 LED bulb units are about to be returned & replaced as one failed. Would be nice if there's a cheaper alternative in future though :happy2:

Do the head light bulbs effect the lights in anyway which it'll fail the MOT?
-
Answered my own question by reading all the thread and the answer is no.
-
Im just changing mine now and have just realised that my 2006 GTI has the extra bulb inbetween the two map lights at the front (should have checked first :ashamed:)
Can I use the spare which is the same as the boot one to go in there or not?!
Cheers,
Matt
-
Also, I've changed the 3 map lights in the rear but the bulbs are physically too big to fit through the holes on the cover!
Anyone else had this?!
Matt

I think the boot one will be too long to fit but I'm not certain as my 2006 GTI doesnt have 3 in the front, which is strange!!
I sent off for my LED's when this thread started but only just fitting them today!!
Most of them were pretty easy but the my drivers side footwell was a pain! For some reason the clear plastic lens cover sits flush with the trim above the pedals so I couldn't wedge it out. (the passenger side doesn't sit flush so was easy to wedge out and remove!) So I removed two torx screws from the trim above the pedals and removed the whole piece so I could push the bulb unit out from the other side!! This seemed much simpler than brute force!!
I'm not going to bother with the glovebox one as it too sits flush and is too awkward to get to. I'll have to destroy it to remove it!
-
Emailed matt regarding these. Looks sweet! Cheers Carlo!

Just fitted mine :jumpmove: another happy customer really like the number plate lights plus the boot one is nice a bright so you can see properly.

Great service. Bought some but not all if the lights. :drinking:
I actually came to this by looking for a solution to the boot being too dark for Mrs MrDo. The new LED light works a treat. She is happy too :pomppomp:
Not sure about the white light in the footwells, seems a little harsh to me, but may get used to it. Still to do the map reading etc interior lights, my worry is they will be too bright but find out soon enough.

No highline here. The difference in brightness and whiteness of the LED is very stark compared to the relatively dimmer, warmer yellow of the original bulb.

Finally fitted my today after having them for months :signLOL:
I had already bought these from ebay directly, not from Matt sorry :happy2:
Very happy with the results, only think to note for me is that the glovebox requires a similar bulb as the footwell lights, so will need to order an extra. Also my rear interior light has 3 bulbs but the centre one doesnt work. Any ideas? It appears to have never worked even with the original bulbs.
Now need to find what i need to put in the girlfriends leon :happy2:

Great thread this, just got my interior kit, arrived next day, looking forward to the 'new' look.

yep, the leds are great. just got my headlight bulbs through from HID-direct. hurry up weekend!!

Just ordered the back plates lights, going to fit them this week :happy2:
Then maybe see about the interior ones!

Replaced all the headlights with MTEC bulbs and LEDs in car. What a difference. Great service too, arrived next day. The headlight bulbs really do make a difference and improve the night driving, I know they are never going to be as Xenons but I found a site wanting over two grand to upgrade with all the correct bits! What? I'll be making do with my standard lights thanks.
-
Hi
I have bought the MTEC bulbs and the interior kit off Matt and fitted. I have a problem with footwell canbus LEDs in that they won't work. I left one halogen bulb in, and tried a canbus led on the other side. It would not work (tried both ways). It also failed the halogen bulb too..... This did reset after removing the led and turning ignition off/on.
Any help on the footlights appreciated as it looks like I will have to be 90% led only.
Also. I have from my BMW e39 a reverse light bulb led. I have installed this and my reverse is awesome! :jumping: you can buy em on eBay, LEDs for rear lights. You want the ones with a magnifying dome on. :happy2: They are about £12.
Cheers

Hi ya all..
Well I have finally fitted the bulbs after waiting four months due to being away. Ordered from Matt back in Jan I think. The results are fantastic!! Matt was briliant and so quick with the posting! Only snag was i was a bulb short as did not know if map light was two or three bulb. Matt soon whipped another bulb in post to sort that..
Results have made such a difference. My footwell lights flicker now and again before they go off, but sure someone has mentioned this before.. too be honest looks quite good when does it..
CHEERS MATT..
Hope to talk my Dad into upgrading now.. :fighting:
-
does matt still provide all of these? just send him an email...i hope so!

-
Anyone ordered up a kit for a Leon mk2 facelift before?
Different set up from the golf, inside. Just had a quick look at mine and I have 3 up front,2 rear, 1 glove box, 1 boot and 2 number plate. Not sure which lamps they are though with taking it apart.
Just from looking i thinking;
2 x 501 and 1 x Festoon or 3 x 501 for the headlining front
2 x Festoon for the headlining rear lights.
2 x Festoon for the vanity lights
1 x Festoon for the Boot
1 x 501 for the glovebox
2 x Festoon for the numberplate.
?

Ok so I finally got round to changing the glovebox bulb tonight! Only thing is now none of the interior lights work after fitting it?!
Any ideas?! Blown fuse?!
If so wheres the fuse situated for these as i checked the fusebox quickly, now unless I missed a fuse what could be the problem :fighting:
-
Yeap, sounds like you shorted it, blown fuse. It's the 7.5amp fuse. Yeap, its the brown (ish) one. :happy2:
-
Ordered Friday, came Saturday! Fitted in half an hour or so. Cheers.
-
Just ordered a set for my Leon ( 4 x 501, 4 x 36mm, 1 x 42mm and 2 error free 36mm) for other face lift Leon owners. Great communication from Matt, look forward to recieving them and posting the results. Going try the mtec headlights at some point too.

You sir, were correct. Fantastic at night time, looks 100 times better.
Standard FL Cupra seats them (I think), same as the ones in the R.

people are these still available?
If so who do i need to message to arrange the order?

I had a similar problem :sad1:
But I purchased new holders as a whole new unit and put the bulbs in those and havent had no problems since :happy2:
3B5 943 021D x 2 is the part no. and they were 16.37inc VAT
-
They've worked spot on for the last month and a half and now there playing up, seems a bit strange.
Thanks Jettair I'll look in to the holders or maybe I single the LEDs about maybe there've come loss.

Mine were fine for a good couple of months iirc, and then one kept going out, so took out and tinkered with new bulbs and it was only when I swapped the unit to the other side which was working that I decided to replace it. So rather than just one I got 2 new ones :happy2:
-
OK, I got the bulbs. Fast delivery. Anybody know what is what though, as they are all unmarked and don't say what they are... I feel really stupid asking but...
-
^^^^ page 6, half way down. :happy2:
Carlo, may be worth putting all relevant info in your OP regarding pics, Matt's email etc? Same questions keep coming a round (no ones fault).

:happy2:
So I've been right so far then. Heh, but the glovebox LED won't work. =/ and yeah, I've tried both ways...
-
Found the issue, the metal pins on the connector weren't connecting properly. Being the idiot that I am, I just shorted out the fuse trying to put the connectors right without taking the light plug out. What a boob. =/
If I am not mistaken, it's fuse 15, the 7.5 amp one. Right?
Well I hope it is the fuse and nothing more sinister. Anyway, they were looking nice until I did that.
-
^^^^ Yeap! :happy2:
-
Question -I changed the rear interiors to led-did you guys have to widen the wholes of the cover? The led bulbs re too big for the holes
-

In which holders? I actually had the opposite problem on some. haha.
-
Rear panel in the centre of the roof. Put the bulbs in had to file a bit of the plastic frame as it would not fit back overthe bulbs
-

Oh... well, no. You take the plastic frame off, take the old bulbs out, put the frame back on, then put the new LED's in...
-
I cant seem to get the size correct is the number plate led 36mm or 39mm ??

36mm :happy2:
-
Just fitted a set of these to my mk6 with no issues apart from having bend the pins slightly on the one for the glovebox to allow the bulb to fit, top service by Matt!
-
Just fitted my set, brilliant! side lights were a bit of a bugger to do but all working and looking well! thanks Matt! :happy2:
seems the glovebox pins being a bit slack is a common issue as I had to tighten them up as well.
-
Well done lads. Really is a great Mod for little money :notworthy:
-
Has anyone bought the sidelights from matt?, if so any pics of them on please
cheers

I'll try and get some later when its dark, just tried in daylight but you cant really see them that well, personally I love the look of the whiter lights, but thought it looked a bit daft with the standard headlights so I've ordered some MTEC bulbs to match.

Thats with just side lights on
They are quite bright, personally think the white light looks so much better, interior as well. (sorry about grainyness, iPhone camera is a bit crap)

Are those the Mtec bulbs?

Are those the Mtec bulbs?
Nope, just the side lights replaced with LED, got some MTEC on order as the standard yellowish bulbs look a bit daft with the nice LED in there
-
my led's got delivered today from matt, all installed in under half hour  just gotta wait for it to get dark now
-
my drivers side LED sidelight bulb keeps registering as being "out" when i start the car - mostly happens when the car has been sat in the sun for some reason.
I got these bulbs off ebay a while back and not from Matt.
Im looking to change them for MTEC SUPER WHITE 501 W5W (x2) as per Monte's first post.
Does anyone have a link to them or is it a case of just getting them off ebay?
Thanks
Rich
-
I could do with some of these, but they are a right pig to fit, well first time anyway, yanked out with pliers, blind...vw should have done better with these.
Looks like ebay.
-
im still digging for info on MTEC sidelights.
Can anyone confirm that these will fit fine on the golf and most importantly, what's the difference between the 2?

Buy the 2nd ones, latest cree type, and let us all know if they fit ok
They need to fit down the fitting "tube", so diameter is important, but they don't state that anywhere......

Well... the MTEC Extreme Evolution side lights DONT work... they stay on for 5 secs and then go off again (as well as throw up a bulb out error on the dash). Have to see about getting a refund
Think im going to abandon the search for reliable LED sidelights and just go for the MTEC superwhites instead...
Hope this helps
