Title: £4k to spend - suggestions?
Post by: Deako on August 16, 2012, 02:54:49 pm
I know everyone likes this game. I have £4k to spend on a new daily/fun/weekend car to replace the Polo GTI. Must be 2dr/3dr. Ideally VAG, but open to suggestions.

Cars ive thought of so far are:

Audi S3 8L
Ibiza Cupra 1.8T
Corrado VR6 (going to view one later, that has just had an engine rebuild, kw v1s, brembos, recaros)
Lupo GTI (Cool, but not sure its fast enough for my needs)
Clio 182
Mint Mk2 Golf 16v

Any other thoughts?

s3 8L.

my mate has one in dolphin grey and even though its started to look a bit dated it is still a awesome car that can hold its own against new stuff

Not VAG but..... Maybe Honda Integra type R. Most fun I've ever had from a standard car, genuinely sorted out of the box. 98 spec JDM is the one to go for  :happy2:

Clio 182 you've already recommended but would be my choice

otherwise a nice clean Mk2 GTI

maybe Mk3 VR6? I know the Mk3 was the unloved one, but it's a lot of car for the money

Boring options.  go for a wild card.

Audi S2 2.2T Quattro.  Rare as hens teeth and stunning!!

Loads of these knocking about for 4k or less

M3s and M5s are too expensive, but.....

what about an Alpina B3 or an Alpina B10

That will get you that same performance for alot less cost!!

s3 or corrado vr6 storm maybe?

Storms are usually knackered. Ive seen a lot around £2k lately. The one im going to see is better than a storm tbh.

MX5.

My wife doesnt even like the MX5. What does that tell you. Im not keen either, and yes, i know they handle well.

Andrew Chappel has a very nice MK2 G60 for sale....only just over your £4k budget  :happy2:

Its actually £5k. And in typical Volkswizard style, massively over priced.

Not VAG but..... Maybe Honda Integra type R. Most fun I've ever had from a standard car, genuinely sorted out of the box. 98 spec JDM is the one to go for  :happy2:

Considered it, but i just dont like the TypeR image.

Clio 182 you've already recommended but would be my choice

otherwise a nice clean Mk2 GTI

maybe Mk3 VR6? I know the Mk3 was the unloved one, but it's a lot of car for the money

Ive been to see 2x 172 Cups and 1x 182 locally. They were all a complete POS. Finding a decent one is the challenge. Could end up driving round the whole country. All were low mileage too, but completely ruined. Even in standard form, they had been ruined.

Boring options.  go for a wild card.

I love the S2, but they are complete money pits. I know a lot of people that have owned them and they have literally had to remortgage their homes to keep them running. Could soon get out of hand with one of them.

M3s and M5s are too expensive, but.....

what about an Alpina B3 or an Alpina B10

Not in Birmingham. I dont want everyone thinking im a dealer.

There would be enough change out of 4k to have a nice holiday in Ireland and rape it along our really cracking country B roads!

LOL. Worst advert ever. Doent even say where in the UK this Clio is.

Ive been to see 2x 172s both described as mint and they were complete sh*tters. One persons rubbish and all that...........

Don't be so 'glass half empty'!

I've bought plenty of amazing stuff by looking at adverts others dismiss as sh*te. My Mg OZs for example, worst thing I've ever read and pics taken with a Fisher Price My First Camera. In the fog. At night. With Vaseline on the lens.

Remember when you used to get the autotrader and buy a car based on a black and white picture the size of a stamp and 20 words?

Those were the days.  :happy2:

Its just that i have seen 2 very poor Clios advertised as mint. 3x actually including the 182. I would happily take a Clio, means i can spend the other £2k on a cheap daily too!

I went to see a Mk2 ABF the other day, 150 mile round trip. Advertised at £2500 andi woudnt give £1k for it. :(

There are a lot of tits out there. I would be more inclined to buy a "known" car for a little more if I were shopping for something older.

In better news, my Dad got a diesel MKI Caddy t'other day for £200. It's ace!!

Have faith.

Mk1 Leon Cupra R would make my shortlist too!

Plenty of 182s around for £2500-£3000. Just travelling to find a good one that takes the time.

I kind of agree, I don't like 5 doors based on 3 doors - they often look like an afterthought. The LCR however was always a 5 and designed to be proportioned as such.

Boat anchor sounds promising, I've a feeling you'll end up hating it very soon though as a daily.

Maybe. My daily isn't like most peoples though. My idea of a daily is a weekend car, as I don't have to commute (walk to work). I'd like to keep it VAG if possible, due to my involvement with a certain Club.

I think anthracite wheels (if standard) are a sign it had the chassis pack. With lower, stiffer springs and slightly wider track.

If its Racing blue without xenons etc, then it would be a 182 cup.

Corrado VR6?

Already going to see one today. It's right at the top of my budget of £4k. Are/can non Storm Corrados really be worth this much in this day and age, with some choice mods?

I'm still unsure. Dropping £4k on a Corrado VR6 just seems wrong. It is lovely though.

Found a nice Mk2 Golf VR6 as well. Got a quote for the change of vehicle and they want an extra £212 to change until my policy expires in February. I fecking hate insurance companies.

I could insure a Mk2 on a classic policy with another company for £200 total im sure.

Probably going to have to end up getting an S3 or something. I desperately needed a car before this weekend as my T4 goes in for complete reupholstery next week. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Edit:
Insurance company just called me back after referring the price. £142 to change to a Mk2 VR6 seems a little better, but when the premium was already £750 for the Polo GTI i still think its dear. There is only 6 months left on the policy, and im not a kid. The wife is also over 25.

Thanks Mike. I have been there with the Mk2 Rocco. It just didnt do anything for me, admittedly mine was not a daily. This one is a GT as well, which is a carb engine. Would do as a stop gap car, but not a permanent solution.

Id rather spend £3-4k and get something really decent. Have the cash sat at home waiting for a good car to come up.

There is an S3 round the corner, described as one of the best S3s the trader had ever seen. Until they put the pics up. Missing door trim among other issues just noticed from the pics.

I have been considering a Mk1 TT 225 Quattro. Plenty around for the budget to be honest.

If anyone ever plans to view this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2002-AUDI-S3-QUATTRO-1-8-T-STUNNING-FULL-BLACK-ELECTRIC-RECARO-LEATHER-3395-/390454285639?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item5ae8e39547

Dont bother. Its a complete steaming pile of turd.

Would be so much easier if i hadnt just spent a fortune buying a upgrading a T4 Van.

For me that should be a lot cheaper being a Cat D. Regardless of how light the damage may have been they are a lot more difficult to sell on. I'd only ever buy one if it was a steal, which that doesn't appear to be.

I always base a cat d at the minimum of a third less than similar examples for sale. There's plenty of TT's around for 4k fella.  :happy2:

So around £2600. I know mods dont count for anything, so that seems to be why he is basing his car as being worth more. Which it isnt just cause it has a set of coilies and some cheap reps on.
