Title: How much can a Edition 30 handle ?
Post by: ejecter on August 17, 2012, 10:21:26 pm
I had a conversation this morning and one of the guys that i work with asked a couple of questions about my Edition 30.We got onto the subject of how much BHP a standard ED30 has got and i said around 230-240 BHP.OK so next question i was asked was how much could it handle and i said anything up to 500 BHP,the guy looked at me like this.......... :rolleye: and obviously thought i was talking out of my  :booty:................................................

Am i ?

neil.

Hmm I think he's been on the old Pinot grigio that one
I'll tell you exactly how much they can handle with the correct hardware fitted when mine goes pop!  (if it ever does)
We're running 400 WHP at the minute, I would guess a bit more is safely feasible but heavily dependent on use, ie fast road car no probs, track monster deffo built motor time chappies!
We're tuning again tomorrow with improved hardware 455.6hp / 407 ftlbs is our Loba cars prev max.
Headlift will be the problem before rod bend we know that for sure !

Ah, but thats not what they can handle, thats more what power people have managed to get their Ed30 up to.

If you after how much power it can handle, as in, still be tractable without Alot of chassis mods id say no more than stage 2+(330-260hp)

Once you go above that, semi slick tyres, LSD etc etc are required, but even then id say its to much.
An S3 or Golf R could probably handle that sort of power, but IMO an Ed30 is seriously going to be flawed at that power purely based on it being FWD.

Doesnt stop the crazy few doing it

Yep, mine was running 440bhp and 510lbft of torque on nitrous on a dyno dynamics roller.....you were there weren't you Matt?

Us crazy few learn our lesson and eventually end up with a 4wd car too! :signLOL:

Yeah but the head was bobin about quite a bit though John
I think the K04 motors are much stronger than we all originally thought,
Back in the early days we thought 330 would kill em now were running way past 460, and set up well still they live!
I think prolonged track use will need a totally different set up than fast street use keeping them cool at high power is going to be the key, some head mods & extra oil cooling will help that's to be addressed next
As Hurds knows all our in house cars will be 4WD next year too, the Loba cars been a good mule for us regards testing so we'll keep him, he's part of the family now anyway  :drinking:

Isn't teff's car the same engine albeit highly tUned pushing 600?

Think Teffs is fully built not stock, a fully built engines power is only dependent on your pocket really
Whatever power you want is achievable if your willing to spend

So what do we reccon with a stage 2+ and track work, is head bolts, mods and an extra oil cooler needed or not as i intend tracking it quite a bit next year but dont intend upping the power anymore.

IMO I think good oil cooling is a great idea on all the 350+ hp cars, after all it's a lot of power, and the stock WTO coolers are tiny! It's not essential but we know that on the track or prolonged high gear usage the oil temps are too much, I don't think this will hurt the motor but the ecu will close the throttle a little without you knowing until the temp comes back into spec (known as dropping into safety)
I'd say St2+ is just fine with good hardware & intercooling for fast road & odd track day
Anything bigger than K04 running Sustained high boost, oil cooling & head mods minimum for fast road and odd track day.
No doubt a car used heavily on track car would need internal mods & strengthening to run a constant & reliable 450hp  / 400 ftlbs +
We know the valve springs go soggy now at high oil / engine temps
