Title: Which tool set?
Post by: rich83 on September 05, 2012, 01:02:44 am
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_177693_langId_-1_categoryId_255215

or

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CLARKE-TOOL-BOX-235-PIECE-HOME-MECHANICS-TOOL-KIT-CHT690-/140753416834?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item20c58eb282#ht_2168wt_1038

For light use only. I dont have any "car tools" at all so i want a fairly good selection. Im leaning towards the clarke, just because its got more in it (i know i know... quality not quantity.... )

The Clarke set looks identical to a tool box I bought from halfords a few years ago.

All the ratchets shatterd to bits when I tried to undo a tight bolt and some of the sockets have split too
The spanners bend easy too

The halfords set is good quality and you get a lifetime warranty with them. They also do a similar set with ratchet spanners and they are very handy

Halfords have the one identical to the Clarke one for less

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductMobileDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&productId=728767&categoryId=165572&langId=-1

But IMO I'd go for the professional set.. If you hold out for the sale the bigger sets get alot cheaper.

Bought the Halfords Professional set couple of months ago after peeps on here recommended it and quality is really very good. Every time I see this set advertised, it's getting cheaper.

If you are buying tools from Halfords rich, only buy a professional set. The rest self destruct. I have the biggest pro set they do.

I have that Halfords Pro tool set in the OP and no complaints for the money.

Problem with any tool set is that there is always something lacking but it's a good kit to have around.

Yeah Halfords kit all the way, had mine years and any issue that I've had were replaced on the spot. Just make sure you get the all stainless ratchets over (as in this type) (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_176497_langId_-1_categoryId_165469), over this type (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_162738_langId_-1_categoryId_165469) as they are CRAP! I continued to be surprised by the amount of discount given by the trade card. Example being when i recently nought a set of Bosch windscreen wipers for just under £20 saving nearly £10. Appreciate Halfords can be expensive but for tools, which a trade card they can not be beaten :)

I can remember a vauxhall forum offering halfords trade cards to paid members as part of the package but I can't remember which one it was.

If you work in the motor trade I think you just go in with a couple of payslips to get the trade card

The 170 Halfords kit shown in the link is virtually the same as the 150 piece kit it replaced which was regularly available at £99.99 and they still struggled to get them off the shelves . This discounted kit is £30 more expensive , great work by halfords if they are getting people to buy it if they know what they used to get for £99 !

Anyway great quality and the lifetime guarnatee makes it a winner .

You get a full set of ratchet spanners now as well. Well worth it.

So how would one go about obtaining such a card?

Depends on the manager of the store but you can walk in to your local branch and apply for a trade card on the spot with nothing more than a drivers licence.
