Anyone know how to put these down it's driving me mad trying to retract them ?

I know the problem! It took me ages to work it out.
There's a flush 'tab'/button in the plastic surround on the top of the seat upholstery which you need to push. It acts as a lock and you just pull out the headrest evenly but very firmly. When the headrest is down on its tubular runners it's difficult to see the 'tab', so start off by lifting the headrests higher.
I drive with all my back seat headrests removed so I can see better out of the rear window. I put one or more in only when I have back seat passengers.

I need part number for both rear GTI leather headrests (not middle one)
Also any idea how much from main dealer?

....What!!? Are you talking about the front seat head restraints? - They are there to protect you in the event of an accident.
If you are so concerned about your new born, get someone else to drive! :fighting: You should be focussed on your driving! :rolleye:
Perhaps the front seat's head restraints (not head rests) are not removable - A good thing. I have Recaro's - You obviously wouldn't like those.
The other thing you can do is add a wider rear view mirror - A good idea anyway.

I remember when my Dad took delivery of his Allegro(!!) myself and m sister were going "Oooooh it's got head rests". They were a bit of a luxury in the late 70's!!

No I mean the rear ones . Baby sits in back and I extended both when people were sitting in back but now I want them put down

if the rear headrests are up, look where the silver poles go into the top of the seat. there are 2 gray plastic rings. on the side of one of those rings you push it toward the middle of the 2 silver poles and push down on the headrest. that should be it.

Depending on how old your little one is and deprnding on which way they are facing (backwards for new born and forwards for slightly older babies) your best getting the mirror that attaches to the rear headrest (so I wouldnt take them out if I were you) that way you'll see in your rear view mirror rather than trying to look over your shoulder... :happy2:

....With things like that to distract the driver I'm glad to see a 'Baby on board' sign in the rear window!
Babies invariably fall asleep with the motion of a car - So why the need to constantly keep looking at them?

who said anything about constantly looking at them... a reasuring glance whilst stationary at the lights is more than enough, and these make it a whole lot easier...
a quiet new born baby in the back of the car that you cant see can be very worrying... did you ever keep going in and checking that your new born was breathing when you first brought them back from the hospital?

Sure, I understand the good sense in looking after your newborn and your concern as parents. I was thinking more about how it might distract from driving and is consequently potentially dangerous for everyone in the car.
However, neither my ex-wife nor myself kept checking whether our children were still breathing when they were very young. But each to their own. Ironically our 4yo son stopped breathing and died when he was in my arms one day.
I think it's probably better with a newborn or very young baby, to have them in the front seat but facing backwards. They can have the natural reassurance of 'seeing' you and a glance is easier. Once I had a blow out at ~100 on the M1 in my BMW with baby daughter in the front. Wifey was fast asleep in the back and baby was asleep and neither knew what had happened! No harm done fortunately as I was able to cruise it to the hard shoulder.
My apologies anyway - I'm in a combative mood this evening.
