Title: Oil HELP!!!!
Post by: ReeceH13 on September 24, 2012, 07:57:08 pm
Hey

turned on the engine with a lovely message telling me to 'check oil level'

Now, I had the car fully serviced on 18th Aug. They filled her up with £48.00 of oil.

Have done about 1,500 miles since. Checked the oil and its BONE DRY! Anyone else had this situation? It was driving fine yesterday and all of a sudden it has literally no oil... No leak on the floor and surely the warning would come before it ran out?!

Thanks so much!

Reece

If its a gti then its quite normal for it to have used that amount. Check your handbook. It will tell you in there. It will need topping up. I would say about 3/4 litre to a litre.

Thanks guys, its a 2006 GTI 20.T Petrol Automatic DSG. Wowza, so all you guys spend quite a lot on oil then? Yikes...

Right,

found out they put 4.6 litres of oil in when they serviced it mid Aug. Now nothing on the dipstick, is this normal guys or should I worry?? Should it consume 45 quids worth of oil over a month? Surely not... I imagine there is still some in the sump but how much for there not to be on the dipstick I dont know

Any help greatly appreciated

Cheers  :happy2:

Top it up (should take at least a litre) until it's at the top of the dipstick and then monitor regularly (I reset my trip when i filled it up) so you know how many miles it will do until the level is at the bottom of the dipstick.

Mine uses a litre (top to bottom of dipstick) every 2000 miles    :surprised:

You will need Castrol Edge 5w30 - try Asda (always cheap) or Halfrauds as they have a deal on at the min  :happy2:

Get it topped up as soon as... I think it states in the handbook 1lt to 600 miles  :sad1: But if its using oil, at least its getting it fresh more often  :happy2:

Don't poor the the entire litre in straight off do it in 250ml intervals and check the dipstick after adding each 250ml to see how it rises up the dipstick.  You do not want to overfill it.

Oh and to reduce oil consumption, drive gently until the engine is nice and warm.  You'll use less oil that way.  :happy2:

Is it just me then, or maybe my low mileage?? Ive had my 2005 GTi since new, do about 7k miles a year and have NEVER had to add a drop, never mind a few litres!! Tbh, that free oil pouch, and oil in the boot, that came with the car has never even been opened, lol!!

Don't think milage makes a Differance. Mines on 92K & uses hardly any

Best bet is to buy a 20l drum from TPS, costs about £70-£80 + vat (depends on what deals there are at the time). I tend to buy one a year, sell a few litres to friends and use the rest changing / topping up my cars. By far and away the cheapest way I've found to buy fully syn 504 spec' oil.

Thanks everyone for your help! (as always )

So this seems pretty normal then?

Thanks Scopes for the discount code, will get involved with that!!

Since ownership my Ed30 has used 3 litres of oil in 7500 miles, I check the level every time I full up with fuel (around 300 miles)

Please bear in mind that just because your dipstick was dry, doesn't mean the car has consumed its' entire sump content - the difference between the bottom and top of the dipstick is just over 1 litre, so when your dipstick is at the bottom, your engine contains ~1 litre less oil than it would if it was full (which will still cause damage to the engine if the oil is not topped up)

if mileage apparently has nothing to do with it, why then do some GTI's need regular top-ups, and some none at all?? As i said earlier, that oil/pouch in the boot of my car hasn't been touched yet, in 7+ years and 50k miles....

A lot of it depends on how well the car is looked after and how it's driven!, drive like miss daisy and you probably won't use much oil, rag it everywhere (especcially from cold) and it will drink like a sailor!

ahhh yes, well now that i have that extra 7/8bhp, i might have to check more regularly!!  :driver:

Is it a case of the car being babied from new that is causing consumption issues?

Obviosuly VW have covered themselves with the 1 quart in 600 miles being 'normal' quote in the handbook leaving many owners with no options.

So where is the oil going? Is it blow by...is it the turbo seals assuming other areas have been checked e.g PCV system.

There are very high number of TFSI owners reporting consumption issues.

Yes, gonna make a huge difference, get some millers Nanotech oil in there and double that gain and your really in trouble  :signLOL:

I believe its the design of the engine, it just uses oil, I dont have a technical description  :signLOL:

My bwa engine did drink about 1 litre for every 700miles but I did trash the nuts out of it.  (did get worse before it took out a piston ring, then drunk all the oil in 20 miles)

Put a cdl engine in gets trashed just the same, does not use any oil??

Don’t know if they changed the design?
Title: Re: Oil HELP!!!!
Post by: GrayMK5GTI on September 25, 2012, 08:41:35 pm
Oil usage is generally dependant on how the engine has been run in. A gentle run in doesn't seal the pistons as well and therefore uses some oil. A harsh run in will bed the pistons in better and therefore it will use less oil

£17.99 is very expensive  :surprised: Asda sells that very same oil for £12

I have always found with both out GTI's and our old Leon Cupra 1.8 20VT (gone but not forgotten ) that if you top the oil up when it is half way between the max and min on the dipstick it would always use oil.  but if i leave them at the halfway mark they tend not to use much more.  the rate of consumption slows significantly as opposed to when it is topped right up.

The assumption is that the OP's car's oil level was right at the top of the dipstick. It's plausible that the mechanic that "filled" the car with oil didn't quite get it right, so it's hard to say if the OP really has a problem.

As a general commenti, it always seems a bit of a lottery with oil consumption, from recent experience:

Toyota 2ZZ - negligible consumption on the road, drinks loads thraped on track.
Honda K20A2 - Depsite relentless thrashing for hours on track, the oil level never seems to move! Brilliant engine.
Various ford diesels - no need to top up, ever.
MK5 GTI - about 2 litres per 10k miles in mixed driving.
BMW 330ci - 5 litres per 10k miles.

See that's what I thought, but when I first got my A3 2.0T AXX with 21500 on it it was using bucket loads of oil. Now at around 60k it uses hardly any. My driving style (as far as I'm aware) has not changed significantly, although I do a lot more long runs now rather than stop start traffic.

I all ways thought, if you start using loads of oil the piston rings are on their last legs?

Ive had my ED30 for 4 years now and have probably only put half a litre in it in all that time ( in between services of course ).Don't
do a lot of milage but some of these figures of the amount of oil being used would cetainly worry me. Why such a vast difference ??

Strange that there is a vast difference, must be the way people drive??

On a seperate note, what are the benefit of these hose's? http://www.forgemotorsport.com/content.asp?inc=product&cat=260305&product=FMKC010 really worth that much?

Bought 05 GTI MK5 3 weeks ago, very happy, 1 owner, FVWSH, 59K miles. Driving home last night and oli light came on. Stopped, bought 1 lite of castrol for almost £20 (ouch) from BP petrol station (was late at night> Next day, light still on. Quick trip to trusted workshop and seems the sensor is the problem, apparently not uncommon for them, to go.

Lesson is, trust the (hard to read0 dipstick

Worth noting that the dipstick only measures the top litre of the sump so a dry dipstick could still have a few litres in the sump  :happy2:

@james - amount of oil used is generally how a car has been run in. Gentle run-ins don't seat the pistons as well as cars that have been thrashed from day one.  :surprised: - could also be down to a PCV failing. Only cars with mega miles (blue smoke out of the exhaust) need to worry about rings wearing out/ failing. - or running 380bhp on a BWA engine
