Yesterday I managed to pick up a set of alloys and winter tyres for my GTi and plan to fit them later this month or beginning of next month when it gets colder.
I'll obviously need to store my summer tyres on the original alloys over the winter. Having looked at lots of places including tyre manufacturers it appears the best solution is to wrap the tyres in the tyre bags/blankets (I have a set of the blue VW ones) and then hang them up. I don't have a garage wall to hang them on so was trying to find a way to hang them in my shed.
I came across the Bottari Tyre Stand from MicksGarage.com (http://www.micksgarage.com/proddetails.aspx?pid=1176944) that looks perfect for my needs. Has anyone used on and can comment on it? My only concern is the 'arms' look really thin, will they take the weight of the Monzas? I don't want it collapsing the in the shed and breaking the garden furniture stored in there!
Thanks

.
If it helps you to know, each Monza 18 weighs 11kg (plus only a few grams) without tyres. But the weight will all act vertically downwards on that stand and not cantilevered which would potentially upset the balance.
That stand looks as if its stability will be a question of balance. But it looks fine in the video (showing small wheels!).
-
Just put the wheels/tyres in a stack and save yourself 25 quid! :happy2:

I'm guessing my Monza 17's are not a dissimilar weight. 11kg isn't bad, I must have been feeling weak yesterday when I was carrying them through the house!

Companies like Continental say you can stack the but you should move/rotate them every 4 weeks and I dont want to be doing that!

Usually works!
Why the need for hanging them, always stacked mine.
:happy2:
-
.
It's obviously ok to stack the alloys but apparently it's the tyres which need occasional turning.
-
^^^^ didn't know that! Whats the reasoning behind that? Have learnt something today. :happy2:
-
+1. Stack them but rotate the tyres in the stack so they're all evenly compressed.
-
^^^^ didn't know that! Whats the reasoning behind that? Have learnt something today. :happy2:
....As Jaz says, compression occurs over time. Rubber being an elastic substance which detiorates over time. Hence the need for new suspension bushes
Ta for the Thank You :drinking:
-
So I guess as I plan to store them for 5-6 months hanging them would be better.
I'm just surprised that the really thin peg arms on that stand can take the weight, but I messaged the company and they say they can so maybe I'll give it a try.
-
^^^^
Check what the peg arms are made of and cover them if there is any risk of surface damage to your alloys. :happy2:
-
My winter wheels spend about 8 months of the year sat in the cellar. Never once had any issues.

That's a good point, the ends have rubber caps but I think I'd coat/wrap the entire arm to protect the alloy.

I quite fancy the liftmaster version on eBay for under £25 :happy2:
Holds up to 28" wheels :signLOL:
Looks awesome to me.

They're the covers I've got. That trolley does look pretty cool. I just wish my shed wasn't at the other end of the garden over 100ft of grass!!
At that price though I'm tempted anyway.

....The good feature, apart from the wheels and handle, is the wheel separators which appear to relieve some of the tyre weights on top of each other.

yeah it looks cool but tbh who cares whaat it looks like, its gonna go in a dark corner in the garage - right ? i mean it could be pink dots and in the corner of the garage what difference does it make ?
from the picture it doesnt look like they are stacked any different than just putting them on top of each other,,,, someone else commented that he stores his wheels / tyres just as in the picture - on top of each other,,, is this thing just a seles gimmick or oes it really make any diff ???
i just cant see why a tyre / wheel would have a problem being stacked on top of each other,,, if i was to buy this myself i would prob just phone someone like michelins tech help line and ask the experts,,,, never had a problem stacking wheels with tyres fitted for 15 years from 15inch to 18s,,,not convinced by this
-
Red, the wheels dont touch each other, there's a nice little gap between them. :)

....That's what I would be hoping for if I was interested in buying one. :happy2:
I don't know how long tyres have to be left stacked on top of each other so that the lower ones are bearing the weight of those above, so that it matters to the rubber condition. It's just something which I have heard some people warn against.
There's no doubt that rubber products do deteriorate over a long time.
-
one thing that does make sense is making sure the tyres / wheels are properly cleaned and fully dried before storage,,,, so you could eat your dinner of them as any dirt / sale etc will eat eat eat whilst in storage.
would the tyres / wheels still need rotating or flipping whilst on this storage rack do you think ?
-
I think as long as the tyre doesn't touch any object i.e. hanging from the rim either vertically or horizontally then you don't need to rotation.
Rotation is required when any pressure is put on tyre. Well that's what I can figure out from tyre manufacturers websites.
-
I definitely clean and seal my wheels before storage. I've got the VW bags as in the pic above. I used to stack them on on the other but since I heard about having to rotate them, I stack them two on two which makes it easier to rotate. Never had issues with running them and they're the rims that go on when I go down the strip.
-
I definitely clean and seal my wheels before storage.
How do you seal them?
-
^^^^ with some wheel sealant I imagine such as Poorboys wheel sealant. Get mine from Cleanyourcar.co.uk, really good stuff.
:happy2:

:happy2:
Wheel sealant is for the alloy rim not the tyre right? Can't see why you need to seal the alloy if its clean and in dry storage? I'm assuming you do not put anything on the tyre itself, I've read on some manufacturers sites that you must not use tyre dressing.
-
^^^^ sealant is for your wheels not your tyres. You should be sealing your wheels on a regular basis anyway so just good practice IMO. Personally I don't put anything on the tyres before storage. No idea if putting anything on the tyres is detrimental, but reason to so while beong stored so don't .

Has anyone tried the vw wheel bags on 19" wheels?
I'll be storing my 19s in the winter and my 18s in the summer but eBay lists the vw bags up to 18"
There Is bags that go from 19" to 22" but I would prefer to just have the one set
I just orderd the stand from eBay so thanks for the link :happy2:
I have just been using upside down buckets to store my wheels but it takes up a lot of room!
And are tyres meant to be deflated or overinflated for storing?

....A tyre expert on here will hopefully correct me if I'm wrong but logic tells me that to store tyres on the rims but not inflated, might more easily promote cracking.

I think Audi do some that go above 18", however I have the VW ones and I think they'd take a 19" wheel. There is a fair amount of overlap on the Velcro fixing.
-
saying that i had michelin ones before although only for 15 wheels but they would not take 16s !
when i worked in garage before we had the facility or storing customers wheels / tyres for the winter etc and we where told to keep them with the normal pressure in them, the reason they gave us was if we decreased the pressure to say flat then as the rubber sits this way for months on end it will get more used to this shape and when you then put all the pressure back in then it weakens the side walls as it stretches from what was its new shape,,,,,, we did ask why this doesnt happen when the tyres are sitting on a shelf before fitting and we where told that they arent effected due to them not being on a wheel and not previouslly been stretched out ?
dont know if i beleived them but make of that as you wish
btw, used the poorboys wheel sealent for the first time today, man theres gotta be a quicker way to protect the wheels,,, it asks for 3 coats of it :surprised:
i done one coat as ran out of time but that took me 45 minutes,,,, 3 coats,,,,, seriouslly is this the quickest way ?
-
Like wax coats on a car, multiple coats on wheels are helpful.

how long does it take you to do your wheels ?
i also need to buy some wheel polish as all i done was washed with soapy water, drove to dry them, wiped them clean then done the poorboys

Dunno if it's been mentioned before in this thread, but when I first got my winter tyres, I asked about storage of 'the ones not in use' given I had two set of alloys to use, so the tyres would always be on their respective rims.
My tyre supplier rang Vredestein and was advised that storing should be done with about 1.0 bar of pressure, so what's that around 12-15psi perhaps (total guess at this time of night) but that's what I have done the last two seasons, so when stored, they have 1.0 bar and then when required, they get pumped back up to normal levels.
Not sure if it's that crtical tbh, but that's what I heard and have adhered to.
Guess it eases the inner pressure somewhat rather than sitting for months with 36/38 psi or whatever.
-
doesnt surprise me mixed advice from manufacturers, our advise came from michelin but dont know what one is correct tbh, one thing to think about though, i sold my old car about a month ago but before i did i had a puncture so put the full sized spare wheel on,,, first time it had been used since 2001 when the car was built,,, could tell by the dot ( date of manufacture ) on the side of the tyre,,, and i couldnt beleive that it still had the full and correct tyre pressure from day one,,, amazing,,,, and it was fully inflated to 31psi,,,, now i know it has to be fully inflated so you can use the thing but after 11 years it lost absolutelly no pressure from -20 degrees to + 30 or so year in year out,,,, i put it on the car and ran it for 1 week,,,, pretty amazing isnt it and i tell you it had no tyre cracking or anything,,, looked like it was bought the day before,,,, it was a continental 195 - 65 - 15 h,,,,,,
maybe need to do a bit more research on the pressures buddy as thats 2 diff manufacturers saying 2 diff things,,,,, but you can actually phone michelin , goodyear etc directly and speak to their tech dept,,,,, guess there numbers will be found online,,,, may answer the quest if you phone maybe 3 of them as the advise i was given from them was around 4 years ago
cheers

Now you mention that I remember seeing on one of the manufacturer or tyre sites about storing the tyres at 1.0bar. I'll see if I can find it again.
-
Found it! This is the Continentals instructions on tyre storage.

The 1 bar does make sense. Enough air for the tyre to hold its shape and not too much pressure so that the tyres have too much force on them.
I just want to be extra carefull storing mine as I bought my 19s second Hand and they had been sitting for a while before I got them. After a week the 2 front tyres started to develop cracks so they had to be replaced. At the price of 19s I don't want to have to pay out for more tyres come spring time
-
Well I've ordered the Bottari Tyre Stand and should be arriving tomorrow. I think I'll be reducing the pressures to 1.0bar, washing and drying the rims and tyres before wrapping in VW tyre covers and hanging on the stand inside my shed. I'll let you now how well the stand copes with the 17" alloys.

There is sod all difference in the circumference going from a 225 40 18 to 225 35 19 only adds 3.5mm to the circumference of the tyre so should fit in the normal VW tyre bags no problem.
:happy2:

It's 235 35 19 s I have
I'm looking into another set of wheels for winter tyres so the cover can be used for my monzas if it does not fit the 19s and ill get the Audi covers for them
Think ill have to order another stand if I manage to get winter wheels though, half my garage Is taken up with wheels, tyres and standard golf bits just now

was the cracking maybe just down to the tyres age ? what did the dot code on the tyre read ( has its week and year of manufacturer )

yeah you cant have them taking over your garage so the tyre stand would be good if it works ok, not read the conti link yet but if 1 bar is right then you can get them all stored in the corner with peace of mind, let us know how you get on buddy and add a pic when you are all set up :happy2:

The wheel bags do fit over 19s
Has made a slight difference to my garage but its still a tip!
Planning to get stacking shelves for my tools and standard parts from my car and throw most of the clutter from the garage in the skip
