I'm thinking its time to move on to something new and a little larger. The Golf has served me so well that it's difficult to think of anything else. So, here is my current line of thinking...and its settling on the current B8 Audi S4 Black Edition (saloon).
I'm keen to hear your individual thoughts or experiences before taking the plunge.
-
Probably the only Audi I'd consider buying :happy2:
-
Are there any other car alternatives that I should consider?
-
I'd consider the new Skoda Octavia VRS..
-
Checked the Skoda out, definitely lots of bang for your buck! I don't think my missus would let me get away with it though. She's a brand magnet!
-
Coming back to the Audi, what colour should I go for taking into account I'll be going for the black styling pack?
-
For me it has to be Ibis white, i know white is kind of the "in" colour at the moment but a mate has just got a black edition a5 and 19" black edition wheels really go well with it. My 2nd choice would be black as I don't think any other colour goes with the wheels.
Don't ask me for any advice on optional extras as I just priced one and it came out at £50k :signLOL:
-
Funny you mention the price... my ideal spec was coming at a tad shy of £49K. Colour wise I'm torn between, white, grey, and black.
White looks great and the black styling pack really stands out, but I think it may give a 'chavvy' image and impact resale values.
Grey, safe but boring. Probably not to everyone's taste.
Black, looks dark and menacing, but the black styling pack gets 'lost' in all the black bodywork.
So, what colour should it be....? :rolleye:
-
Imola Yellow or Brilliant Red
-
Imola Yellow or Brilliant Red
Yellow will not go with black and red sports seats. Red again, may not appeal to the mass Audi clan.

Pretty much spot on there, but I would go white, Ibis white as I don;t really like the metalic Glacier white
Imola Yellow or Brilliant Red
If Mojo is worried about white with black styling pack being chavvy, yellow with the black is definitely off the list :signLOL:
-
Either White or Grey.
I think Grey looks brilliant with the styling pack...
-
Or Sprint Blue!
Come on, anything but these monotone, boring as hell colours!

I think sprint blue would look good but it's not listed on the colour options on the colour configurator, tbh there's not many colours to choose from

I gotta have the magma red and black seats...and blue don't go with that!

Are there any other car alternatives that I should consider?
Definitely!
Have a look at the 335i, it will be more fun to drive than the S4; IMO, the latest 3series is more attractive, too, as much as it pains me to admit it...
My brother has friends who have S4s and 335s and he much preferred the BMW.
As much as I dislike BMWs, it is the car I would buy...
Test drive both and decide, but there is no chance I would get an S4 without testing the BM first, too.

There's a Sprint Blue one on Pistonheads. Looks pretty good.

Agree with UZ, drive the S4 and the 335i, one feels far more alive than the other

Even when the S4 has the optional sports differential installed?
-
Had a 335i coup for the last 2 1/2 yrs, great engine and quick even average 30 mpg.
But disappointed with BMW build, customer service & reliability.
Stuff fixed (under warranty)
New 7 speed auto Gearbox (£10,000)
New Multi Media control panel
R/H Xenon washer cover broke off 3 times
L/H Xenon washer cover broke off 1 time
Drivers door handle and lock worked loose about to fall off
Not covered under warranty
Rear 19" M Sport Double Spoke wheel 'Split'
New Wheel & Tyre = £1000.
As a £45k car and my 4th BMW from the same dealership you would have thought replacing the broken wheel for free would be a no brainer!! going to Audi in 6 months :happy2:

Rant Over
-
So, who wants to buy my GTi. Single owner from new, with loads of mods - as it stands?
-
A friend has a 330d saloon with 18's and over 5 years got through 3 rear wheels - all having cracks in them.
Another friend who lives in London (so not loads of use) had a 335i convertible with 19's from new, in 2 years he had 2 or 3 on the rear too, again these split - one caused a blow out or so it was thought.
Not cheap to replace and like you BMW didn't want to know.
-
Do you think getting one in white will adversely affect resale value in the long term?
-

Not as much as 6 or 7 years ago; white is a popular colour nowadays.
It won't hold up as well as black or grey, but I don't believe it will be too bad; the A4/3-series are both fairly popular in white these days.
-
Not much longer to go...estimate another 30 days to go...still waiting on a confirmed delivery date.
-
The biggest problem with those BMW's is not the wheels its the run flats, they are the cause of the rims splitting.
Quite a few people get rid of them and are glad because ride and handling is improved.
I agree though BMW's stance appears to have been poor on warranty for damaged wheels. Although I read some guy took them to small claims and won so BMW had to replace the damaged wheel(s) :happy2:.

Audi S4 with every conceivable option on the list. Its going to be a beast! I'll post pics once I get my dirty mitts on it...
-
You going to map it?

So you really only have 4 choices then ... white, black, grey and red.
And i think 99% will say white or black.
-
Nice choice, I see they reduced the CO2 on the facelift model (new fancy lights)
-
So you really only have 4 choices then ... white, black, grey and red.
I think you can get it in blue too.... but I bet you've never seen one!
So did you order an Avant?
-
You going to map it?
Of course...apparently a strightforward remap takes it to 460bhp and 517nm torque. Lush!

Saloon in phantom black, running on 19s.

Holy cow! What engine does this have? Turbocharged?
-
Ahh 3.0 supercharged!
-
Car is built at port in Germany waiting to be shipped over....
-
Schweet... another couple of weeks, it'll be handed over covered in swirls! :P

Really? I knew they were strong, but not that strong!!!
This is one for the next car list, in avant form of course.

I've had a quick look into this, appears that the best I can find from a remap is 70bhp increase to 400bhp, which is still good! But would imagine a few more mods needed to bring it up to 460bhp. It's a huge leap from the standard 330ish I believe it is..
-
I think APR are the furthest with development on these engines. 460hp involves a pulley upgrade and if you want more still that's on it's way via a larger supercharger!
-
Check out the MRC tuning website. There are some more details around the remap capabilities and modding options.

....Sports Differential? It's an awesome extra. I had a new S4 Avant as a loaner and was very impressed with it - It didn't feel like the bigger car than the Golf that it is.
You'll want a Milltek to enhance the exhaust music.
But over one week my mpg was only.................

Hi Robin, yep got the sports diff, audi drive select (ADS), damper control, so on.
The face-lifted 2013 S4 apparently has better fuel consumption. It has stop-start tech + other fuel saving bits. I'm expecting to get mpg in the late 20s and perhaps even 30mpg, but hey I'm not getting this motor for its green credentials....
I'm hoping to pick the car some time during the week commencing the 4 March. Not too long to wait.
-
What sort of driving are you doing to expect late 20's/30mpg - Mostly motorway? The ED35 just manages 30 on the motorway at 75mph, thats a big ask of a heavier 3.0. I will be interested to see the result of both the mpg and the re-map :driver:
-
Blimey just been looking at these on RS246, it seems that 450bhp+ is acheivable from just a re-map, and high 30MPG if driving like a granny. All of this is ridiculous for a big car like the S4.
-
There'll be one way to find out for sure... perhaps a week and half to go!
Not a face-lifted S4 but the sports diff info. remains relevant http://youtu.be/viWJUaakMKs (http://youtu.be/viWJUaakMKs)
-
lower co2 also on the latest 3.0T engine too
-
yeaah baby... :popcornsoda:

Friday the 8th March is the day... whey hey!
-
One more night to go...will I be able to go to sleep tonight?

Very doubtful. Enjoy the collection tomorrow :happy2:

Keep it safe!

We want pictures!!
Probably out enjoying it too much!
-
Will get some pics...out of all the days it had to be raining today!
Got back from the dealer about an hour ago...and boy is the car tough!
-
Photos after having had the car for 7 months and a quick clean...

Very nice indeed. Still may be an option for my next car. Has it been mapped?
-
Thanks, not remapped yet. The revised S4 have a new ECU so waiting for MRC to crack it. The pre-face lift ones easily map to 470 bhp at stage 1. Whoopeee :-[

With a growing family I'm now considering trading the S3 in for an S4 Avant. Whats the real world mpg - not hooning it, not driving like a granny either? high twenties realistic?
-
I borrowed an S4 for Audis in the Park,it was a bit past its sell by date but it had the lovely V8 4.2 engine with decat pipes, sounded sweet

I normally average at 27 mpg, that's a mixture of motorway and in town driving. On the occasions I have resisted pressing the pedal I can get 39 mpg but that's cruising at a mind numbing 65 mph.
The facelifted S4 has stop start tech and all the usual petrol saving wizardry. These fuel consumption figures are for a S-tronic gearbox. Apparently, the manuals are little more thirsty and more expensive on road tax becoz of CO emissions.

Thanks, thats bloody good - I've never seen more than ~36 mpg in the S3 even taking it easy. Doesn't sound like its substantially thirstier than the S3 for day to day driving which is incredible for what it is.
