I have to say I wasn't expecting the sat nav in m 10 plate golf to be this bad.post code search is a joke. Maps maybe old but this is very poor compared to ford system or even as tom tom
-
What's rubbish about it I have it in my golf and its just Fast as tom tom and just as accurate even with the old maps

Agree with Joe. Mine has worked impeccably even in the darkest depths of Dartmoor and the Lake District.

My mk6 came with a rns510 and I use a tomtom in the works van everyday of the week and have done for the last 5/6 years, I was amazed how good the vw rns510 is clear screen, well lit both night and day, easy to use, good poi's, I love the way the directions are on the dash aswell. Prefer it over the tomtom which can often throw a wobbly! tomtom hd traffic is good though.
I had always read in magazines that factory fitted sat navs were'nt worth the money you should go for aftermarket units like tomtom etc, but I recommend the vw system!! (especially good value as a retro fit) I only wish I used my car to go to more places that I didn't know so I could use the satnav more!
-
when i bought the car it would only do a three digit post code , seemed poor but worked ok once id got it goin ....Then vw replaced the unit due to a cd fault , it came back fresh and could perform a full post code input to my home adress, happy days i thought ....So now i need it for work it seems it doesnt want to find any post codes or even local towns....Reading things on the net it seems im not the only one to have problems ..

sounds a good idea , and there faster than your gti :P

What head unit is it?
-
Certainly the rns510 has its charms but despite owning one for maybe four years, I will readily admit that there are far better aftermarket units that do more.
Besides, it's gotta be better than Apple Maps.

I have a mfd2 and have found it pretty good myself - dash display is a great feature, but the woman's voice is slightly harsh haha!
Postcode search isn't brilliant for me but probably operator failure there.
Some areas aren't recognised on the map either - not sure if my map disc is upto date or if you can even get new maps for these old headunits?!
I'm guessing the OP is using something much newer than me as they are in a 2010 car.

I personally wouldnt pay good money for a Sat Nav system that didnt do full postcode searches. It was maybe acceptable when the Mk5 came out in 2004 but there is no excuse for the later versions of the RNS not to have been upgraded to full postcode search. I hope the Mk7 comes with it!
-
Rns's have had full postcode search for a couple of years now.
I've had my RNS since feb and its been spot on. It has it's moments like all sat navs but I never depend on it fully or any other sat nav for that matter

Thanks for that Nodz , not before time as well. I would have one but only for the HD that it has fitted , and its a bit expensive to have one fitted just for that.

Doesn't the RCD510 have a hdd? I thought the only difference between the RNS and RCD was the RNS having nav and some RCD's having DAB

No I think they come with a built in 6 disc changer instead.

Correct they do indeed - but they also have the SD card slot at the front which is very useful
-
it has hdd and sd card slot , plays my ipod nice , seems i was expecting too much from the system ...I just expected it to be on par or better than the nav system in my Focus rs .Also i think the sound is poor on the mk6 compared to my old ed30 ...I have ordered a update disc so only time will tell ..

I have had my RNS510 since Jan 2011. It's a retrofitted version C. Mine had the latest maps at the time (V7) and I have had full postcode search since the beginning (still on the same map version). Not had any issues inputting the full postcode to the destinations I have been to (although most of them have been bigger city's).
Overall I am very happy with my RNS. Definitely one of the best upgrades I have done in my GTI :happy2:
