Title: LED Door Warning Lights - Review
Post by: MC71 on October 27, 2012, 11:40:29 pm

                           LED Door Warning Lights

  (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmcaborn%2FMy_car%2F3694b50d10fc0ab86d65e3bb41222815_zps68f6d63a.jpg&hash=dec24cb5334b56dc7ef7d181fe3e352168fde4a9)

I bought a pair Door Warning Lights from Bold-Sport.com after seeing them in other cars and had them fitted and coded by Eddie-NL. They sent the wrong wiring looms as they were way to short for their required purpose (meant for a 4 door and not my 2 door, my fault when ordering I imagine), not a problem for Ed though as he just made some other wiring looms the correct length and carried on!  :notworthy:  :notworthy:

Product

I bought one pair of "LED Hyper White" Door Warning Lights for my 2 door car. Mine (the Hyper White's) came supplied with 2 LED panels, each one having 4 red LED's facing outwards and 3 white LED's facing down towards the ground. Also supplied with the Light units are the wiring loom to connect the units to the controller in the door. There are 3 versions of units available, from standard OEM W5W bulbs to LED Warm White units and the LED Hyper White units.

Why

The amount of light these give out really is incredible, really does make a very noticeable difference. In my opinion some form of door warning lights should be fitted as standard in every car as it not only aids safety (cars/bikes etc travelling from behind you can see that the is door open) and convenience (helps prevent you stepping into a puddle and other nasties etc) and of course it lights the area around the door.

For 2 pairs (for a 4 door car) £70.52 inc P+P (prices exclude fitting)

Fitting/Installation Guides

Removing Door Cards

Fist off, the door cards need to be removed. A comprehensive written guide on removing the door cards in below (and also a video for those that like their movies). It's not an easy thing if you've never done it before, these will help...

Wiring/Installation

For the wiring for the OEM and LED Door Warning Light's fitting/installation there some good DIY "how to" guide about, I've included just 2. First one is from my-GTI.com and the second is from r32oc.com.

And also information on the different Generations of door controllers (GEN 2 Min K, GEN 2 Max L and GEN 3 M N and Q) which will come in handy when seeing what's what and which wire goes in which position.

Alternatives

OEM Door warning lights and Connector Housing can be bought from the dealer and come preinstalled with a standard W5W bulb in the unit I believe. A few other bits (repair wires etc) are needed and all told its cheaper than the kit i bought. I thought about going this route and fitting these myself but being a complete muptard when it comes to this sort of thing I left it to the professionals to fit.

Part numbers for the OEM parts required...

OEM Door Warning Light unit X2.   1K0 947 411A
Connector Housing X2.                    1J0 971 972
Repair Wire.                                       000 979 019
Cloth Wiring Loom Tape.                 000 979 950

OEM Door Warnig Light's and Connector housing....

Or for the "bling" look you can have LED Door LOGO Projector Lights instead. These will need a hole drilling into the button of the doorcard into which the unit is screwed and wired into the controller and coded in the same way as normal Door Warning Lights. These units can be bought from all over the interweb for £10-£30ish, example from eBay (China) being...

Conclusion

These may not be to everyone's taste, mine are bright but even upgrading to the OEM Door Warning Lights with a standard W5W bulb is far better than no illumination at all. It's a fairly cheap and easy to fit mini mod that makes a big difference to you, your passengers and other road users and pedestrians.

did she think the looked tacky ? I was thinking that but wasn't sure.
can I fit these led door lights myself or does it need someone who knows what they are doing, also do they need coded ?
Title: Re: LED Door Warning Lights - Review
Post by: marko on December 05, 2012, 12:40:32 pm
they need coding scott...
easy done and a handy diy job for any fella to do...i done the 2 rears and changed to chrome switches at the same time..now i just need a couplke of hrs to get the front done

i would recommend getting a few new panel clips as well as they are quite hard to get the door panels off without snapping a few

  :happy2:

Post by: scottm72 on December 05, 2012, 01:00:24 pm
yeah I asked the question about the coding and didn't realise it was in the main review  :stupid:
just bought a set with as you say some panel clips
look a good mod
I don't have vcds but I am getting the chrome switches delivered and will get these coded at same time when I have all parts together.
although I cant code them is it just plug and play for me to do before I find someone to do the coding so to not need to pay someone for the actual fitting of them to kep my costs down.

ok 28 pins is overkill but so cheap lol and knowing my luck all will break

IMO there is no point in using the OEM housings (not sure if the LED will fit anyway) and placing the LED strip inside as the price to do this compared to buying the LED (which come supplied with non OEM housing when you buy them) units with mini loom is negligible.

The link you've posted is the one I originally posted in this thread and is very helpful. Make sure you know which door controller you have as the wires will go in different places for Gen 1 & Gen 2 compared to Gen 3. I would recomend contacting one of the forum "wizards" such as Eddie-NL or Golfman to assist.

^^

Thanks mate :)

i saw on another thread that the parts for OEM housing, repair cable and with some W5W Leds are under £30. But as you have said it depends if the LED light will fit into the housing.
Title: Re: LED Door Warning Lights - Review

^^^^

1K0 947 411 A (1K0947411A) - Door Warning Light (1 per door) are around £10 each
1J0 971 972 (1J0971972) - Connector Housing (1 per door) are around £1.00 each

Then some W5W bulbs - from anywhere for about £0.50p each (or single and multi W5W LED's can be bought from eBay from £1 each.

Some repair wire and Robert's your Dad's Brother.

So with a bit of hunting around and a trip to your local dealer you could do this (or very similar) for around £25 per pair.

(Or spend a couple of quid more and get them form BoldSport.com)

^^^^ No tax (import duty) is due on any item bought from this region in this price band, I believe it's over £100 so no worries.

From my OP.......

For 1 pair (for a 2 door car)   £40.95  inc P+P via the cheapest shipping method available.
For 2 pairs (for a 4 door car) £70.52 inc P+P (prices exclude fitting)

So the only difference between the Bold-Sport kit and building it from the dealers is that you can have LED from Bold-Sport and you'd need to buy some wire if you built the kit yourself and lose out on the connector?

Granted, but if its cheaper to buy from VW UK then why arn't people doing it?  Is the connecter with the Bold kit essential?  I presume you cant work with bare ended wires?

It's a choice. The review is not for VW OEM Door Warning Lights but for LED aftermarket Door Warning Lights but i have posted in the review that alternatives are available if you so choose.

You may decide to do this "mini mod" yourself with parts (I've provided the relevant Part Numbers for the OEM parts in my review) and save some money, if so, all is good.

And the connector is a few pence so I wouldn't.

Looking at these for a 2 door. Are the approx £35 for the bulbs and the holders? Just a bit confused as you can add bulbs seperately too!  :ashamed:

Yeap, around that price for the light units, the LED bulbs and the mini door looms that are required.

Here you go, with the LED Hyper White Bulbs selected (if that's what your after), for a 2dr with mini looms £35.90 + £5.98 shipping).....

You most likely have a gen 1 /2

I used this guide

Put the 12v pin into pin 1 and took the ground from the petrol cap switch from driver side and I think it was from the window control on passenger side

After ringing Tps this morning even at my discount level these total to 31 quid then adding the price of led bulbs it works out the same price as the bold kit so think I'm going to go that'd route instead

What's the delivery/ waiting times on these?

^^^^ usually (and I say usually), around a week from order to your door.

Oh and if you want the OEM look, just get the W5W bulbs. A pair of OEM Door Warning Lights from Boldsport.com that includes everything you need is only £26.13  inc delivery.

I wanted to go a touch brighter then standard bulbs just so it's lite a bit more plus my reg lights are oem rocco ones and the head lights are super white so LEDs would go better but at the cost of oems plus the work of building the looms it just easier to go for the bold kit plus on the up side you get better LEDs with prob a better light distribution

Bold-Sport seem to be in Hong Kong. I am in Hong Kong at the moment and ordered the stuff on Sunday and paid HK$ to there bank account with delivery to my HK office. Got a response saying they would be posted on Monday I was in Macau on Tuesday but when turned up at my HK office on Wednesday morning the package was already on my desk with HK stamps and sent via Hong Kong Post so likely it arrived on the Tuesday. I ordered LED bulbs the door warning lights and spare LED's and various parts and all was there nicely packaged and all as ordered so a great service. If being sent from HK I would presume 4-5 days to the UK.

Looking forward to getting back to the UK in the next few months and fitting the parts   :happy2:

Cheers Paul

Just thinking there Marko, might try changing to standard bulb. Could be that the LED bulbs are throwing the fault? What you think?

Urgent help needed please... I have repair wire 000 979 019 and it does not fit into the terminal block of the door controler, should they have to be forced in... This does not look very close to fitting.

Help please the car is in bits, I'm getting cold and want to go home.

They do fit, but will need gentle persuading. Check your putting it the right way in and gently push in, I used one of the misuses hair grips to push down until clicked into place.

Take your time, don't rush it, that's when things always go wrong  :happy2:

Which controller are you doing front or rear? Which Gen controller?

Which pin position on the block?

Upload pictures to photobucket, then copy and paste the image code in your post  :happy2:

The repair wire just will not fit in that hole without butchering the connecter block.

Will call  TPS in the morning to check they have supplied the correct part.

Cheers for the help so far

Ed would these do the job?

So these arrived this morning. They work and stop the error code but cannot fit them inside the unit as the LED's are too big  :sad1:

Anyone know of a smaller resistor kit?

To quote myself....

Quiet at work today so finnished the job off, 979 019 has been superseeded to 019E which doesnt fit my connector, so TPS supplied a 000 979 009 repair wire, fits perfect now, even managed to get hold of the VAG cloth loom tape  (000 979 950),all looks rather factory, shame its not visible :happy2:

Now just need to get them coded.
