Title: Is there any common engine problems?

does the Gti suffer from any common problems? either in standard form or once remapped?

No common issues as I know. Although some can sound like a diesel

Nothing really common, out the box there pretty good.  Those that have had issues - coilpacks, spark plugs, MAF's, loose pipes, torn DV's, PCV's - all wear and tear sort of items, the biggest issue some have had is fuel pumps.

I think its to do with how you treat it aswel, look after it and it will be just fine. Like someone said though the earlier model had DV problems when remapped but there have been a few revisions of the valve and seems fine now and cheap from VW aswel, somewhere in the region of £30 I think.
