What are peoples thoughts on a Pirelli vs waiting and getting a MK6 GTI?
I can't decide whether to take the plunge on the Pirelli or wait a bit longer for the MK6 to come down in price a bit more......
-
Personally I would get pirelli. Much easier to tune, limited edition and mk5 looks so much nicer than mark 6. Also much cheaper...

Pirelli will hold it's value better and is more tunable, but the Mk6 looks better imho and it's a newer car. On balance i'd go for the Mk6
-
As above, I dont like the rear end of the mk6 it looks too plain and not aggressive enough
-
The MK6 is relatively rare compared to the Mk5. 2004-2008 people had more money available so you'll notice more Mk5 GTI's on the road than Mk6 GTI's (at least I do anyway and that's my unscientific theory). So I'm not sure the Mk6 will depreciate all that quickly.
However the Pirelli is ultra rare and has a KO4, but has a limited colour availability - no red for example.
Nice dilemma to have :happy2:
-
I'd get neither, and get an ED30. I think they are virtually the same car, and I'm not keen on the wheels or the yellow interior trim and tyre treads on seats. The Ed30 is perfect, with half leather/half interlagos, and it's cheaper.
-
Also if you buy a Mk6 you are automatically excommunicated from this forum. Allegedly.
-
Definately a Pirelli....but then I would say that! If it were me I would try them both and make my decision from there. :happy2:
-
I initially found the mk6 gti a bit bland and I dont like the fact that I still need to look twice to see if its a gti or a gtd, saying that the more I look at them the more they've grown on me, I absolutely love the R but it'll be a few more years before they're in my price bracket.
Personally if I was to have to make the same choice as you now I'd go for a Ed30, not a big fan of the Pirelli interior or the wheels.
-
I agrees with the comment above regarding buying an edition 30. Virtually the same car as the pirelli but looks better IMO. MK6 looks good but only if it's got a high spec such as 18" monzas and xenons. The Pirelli would be a lot more tuneable and therefore would be my choice.
-
Thanks for the comments, an interesting mix!
I do like the ED30 but in my area they are all very expensive comparatively, this Pirelli is a 58 at £10k on 67k miles, black 5 door. I'm going to view it tomorrow but on paper seems pretty good?!
-
^^^^ good price that, spec dependent! :happy2:
-
Unfortunately no Xenons but from what I can see it has an RNS510, Dipping Mirrors (Lux Pack) and Heated Seats......
Need to check all that out!
-
MK6 GTI gets my vote, having said that there are some Aldi S3's knocking around for similar used prices to the MK6 GTI if your interested in Aldi's.
EA888 platform better place to be and better engine - this depends on what your coming from...
Bang for buck tuning potential then yes an Edition 30 would be a good place to start, at the end of the day its relative to budget.
-
MK6 GTI for me. I think they've matured nicely. The MK5 is looking a bit old now IMO.
-
Hmm it's a tough one.... There's a tasty looking R32 locally as well but it's the road tax that puts me off....
I'll have a look at the Pirelli and see whether it takes my fancy, still not sure about the interior until I actually see it.
-
I think the Pirelli interior is really nice. I still find it hilarious when people say the Edition 30 is "better looking". It's literally only the wheels that are different. At least buying a Pirelli is buying some exclusivity, unlike the Edition 30 which was produced in mass numbers (compared to the Pirelli).
-
The only thing that would put me off a Pirelli is the limited colour choice , why didnt they give us the Yellow ones they do overseas? Or even White and Red would be nice! If it was my money Id have the Mk6 though. as I prefer the front and rear ends.
-
Mk6 Ed35 simples ;)
-
very rare to hear someone preferring the mk6 front end to the mk5,,,, mk5 front is loads better but each to their own
also remember that the paint used on the mk6 tornado red is very very soft with a white undercoat and it chips very easily, go up close to any one and the bonnet looks like a dart board.
mk6 gti looks way to plain against a mk5 gti,,,, the mk5 looks a lot tougher
had a very amusing situation a few days ago going over a roundabout, I was behind a mk6 gti with 2 teenagers in it and they saw me so as soon as we cleared the roundabout they floored it, now my car is just stock as just bought it but with 38k on it the response is razor sharp,,,, we got up to about 80mph with no pull away then between 80mph and 100mph I out powered them making them pull into the left hand lane at around 100mph,,,,the extra boost I had compared to them was quite a lot actually, my gran was in the passenger seat and loves driving although I don't go over 100mph but I tell you the picture from the guys faces as I glanced to my left whilst cruising past them at 100mph especially when they saw an oap looking back at them was priceless lol
mk6 gti slapped lol
ps,,, also don't like a car that needs a sound generator under the bonnet to kid on it roars as the mk6 has,,,,,,
-
I do hope you were on a private road where there were no other motorists or pedestrians around young man......*shakes fist*............
-

If it makes a better noise, which it does, then who cares?
-
Plus, the Soundaktor is on cars from 2011 onwards, so if you're after an early example it won't matter.
-
.....we got up to about 80mph with no pull away then between 80mph and 100mph I out powered them making them pull into the left hand lane at around 100mph, the extra boost I had compared to them was quite a lot actually...
So you out powered a car that has more power than yours? And extra boost too? Sounds like they might have just had more sense that you!
-

Get one pre-March 2006
-
Make sure you view and drive both cars, there's pro's and con's for each (that's life) and then make up your own mind.
Enjoy your search :happy2: thats the best bit, its paying for it thats the pain in the a#r#e!

as usual mr parker your rudeness is consistent as is your annoyance on this forum :booty:

Aww, you want to stop being so sensitive mate. I don't normally bite on the "look at the size of my dick" stories, but are you seriously convinced you "out powered" a car that has basically the same engine but with 10bhp more?
A tip: stories about driving at ridiculous speeds on public roads don't impress anyone. You just come across as immature with scant regard for the safety of others. Sure we all do it, but don't broadcast it.

I do practice safe driving mr parker and very rarely go above 70mph at most, on this occasion it was a national speed limit road and very big and open, and yes was naughty but we all do it rarely,
as for the mk6 being 10hp more, yes but that can get outweighed by being on the accelerator at the right time, fyi about a minute later I was repassed by the mk6 when I dropped back to 60mph
as usual we don't agree but we never do :signLOL:

I think the shape of the MK6 GTI is better, the MK5 is more round and softer looking in comparison.
As someone mentioned earlier the platform is looking a little dated now.
