.....After deciding keep the ED35, which is currently REVO stage 1 (300bhp on JKMs heartbreaker), I think I should pepp it up a bit more, performance wise. Stage 2 being the next logical step
Ive already spoken to Charlie at Milltek and sorted a nice price on a TBE resonated system, so thats the exhaust side sorted.
I will be dropping Dan an email at Vanworx reference the stage 2 software, and I should also consider the DSG software - Does anyone know if this is out for the ED35 yet? And what does the DSG software give me over the standard software, apart from upping the torque levels?
And finally, the intake - On my previous stage 2 GTI's Ive always had Carbonspeed, but there are obviously better gains to be had out there now, but Id like to keep noise levels down as its my wife's car etc etc
Thanks in advance
-
If it's your wife's car, shouldn't she be the one who decides if it needs 'pepping up'?

No, but thanks for your input :P

Ed 35 runs fine on stage 2 with just the tbe and no intake :happy2:

As a gather from your message, so could I really run it stage 2 with no intake. They always breath better with an intake, but i dont want it sounding like darth vadars cousin, when my wife is on the school run.....
-
i've been in no rush to fit one, runs fine and revo have done plenty of logging with the car, never envisaged as a number chaser
-
Mmmmm interesting. When are you going to SRR?
-
Been running stage 2 for 70k without an intake as I hated the noise and the car pulls and drives just fine but that's an ed30
-

not sure yet as need kitty issues to settle down a bit, i think chungster is coming to see if he can find his missing ponies

The truth is.....the car is nw too f'ing loud on WOT :signLOL:
But yeah still looking to do a run at SRR to find missing ponies
-
maybe a panel filter? more air but non of the noise.
-
.
By virtue of being a hollow pipe, any and every aftermarket tubular air intake is going to make more noise than a flat panel filter type. Some are 'noisier', or should I say 'louder', than others.

Let me know when your going. :-)

I'd be up for a SRR visit.
In answer to the OP's question personally I would just go TBE and stage 2.

Agree with Matt.. I never ran an intake on my ED30 until it went Stage 2+. I ran it with Stage 2 (Milly TBE and panel filter) for 18 months and it was plenty quick enough.. Only went for an intake in the end when going Stage 2+ .
One of the most noticeable things about going Stage 2 is the DP and spool up. Huge difference IMO..
-
Ok panel filter it is then.
Who's up for organising a meet at SRR, shalli get some dates off Charlie?
-
Don't bother with a panel filter.
-
Don't bother with a panel filter.
I was wondering how long it would take for someone to reply about that.
If the OP is worried about noise then just stick with the OEM filter. When it comes to replace the filter put a pipercross or K&N filter in. You'll not see much gains, but the placebo effect is great
-

Only 2 Saturdays left - 24th Nov and 8th Dec. and only possible at the end of the RR days already organised on these dates.

Suits me perfectly, i thought you needed a filter/intake for stage 2.
And reference SRR, why dont we aim for February time, after xmas etc is out of the way
-
If we are only doing limited numbers then why not tag on after someone else.
If you are waiting until Feb then I'm sure RR will be doing another JKM one.

Little update on this;
Full Milltek TBE Race system (resonated) to be ordered tomorrow
Stage 2 re-map shortly afterwards (REVO)
NQSBBK being ordered tomorrow, via DaveB's mate Jonny - http://www.brakecaliperrefurbs.co.uk/ Going for GTI red - Anyone got any ideas on logos?, Im just thinking on keeping it plain.
Looks like I should start a build thread........

....This is a real first for you, Oli - You never usually keep a car long enough! Nor do you do much modding IIRC.
Has the call got through to you at last?

Haha. I've always mapped if necessary but that's normally about it. Didn't need to mod the 997 or RS4.
-
Didn't need to mod the 997 or RS4.
....Very true - They're good out of the box. Although I would have put a Milltek on the RS4, but that's just me who likes sound so much - I love the Porsche 'clatter' when on the revs :notworthy:

Not enough pics Oli.
Where's this build thread at?! :P

Just a small update on this;
Ive just paid for the NQSBBK off Jonny at BCR. Ive gone for the standard GTi red with Brembo logos in white. Ive got Ferrodo DS2500 pads, ready to go on new standard discs, that will have the inner 7mm taken off by 1mm, and then painted so I dont have the rust line from unused disc face.
The Milltek is due for delivery later this week, Ive gone for the race system, with the resonated pipe, to keep noise levels down.
Im then going Revo stage 2, and hopefully a DSG map, to take the torque limiters out etc - waiting for a reply from Revo as to whether they do this for the Ed35 yet, as they didnt when the stage 1 map was put on.
Hoping for 320-330bhp, with a nice brake setup......perfect for the school run. :innocent:
-
Are you planning any suspension mods Oli?
-
Maybe..........
-
Maybe..........
So that's a yes :signLOL:
-
Do you know what revision DSG box you have Oli?
-
Do you know what revision DSG box you have Oli?
No. Ive emailed Revo to see if they do it yet
-
Oli
I bet the kids are thrilled about being delivered to school in record time. Sure your wife is not complaining about getting to the shops 5 mins sooner - more shopping time
When will you get to drive it :rolleye:
-
:signLOL:
-
Haha, very good. :congrats:
I drive it every so often..... :driver: and when I do I like to surprise other faster cars. In all seriousness I think when this work is done this will be a great all rounder, docile when needed, but very fast when necessary.
I like to have a little project on the go :happy2:
-
ITG closed cone intake doesn't add any real noise, to my disappointment. Not cheap though
-
The DSG map is a Must do Oli.
Faster, cleaner gear changes
Removes the torque limiter
Increases clamping pressure on the clutch packs for better torque handling
Locks out kick down and auto gear up in manual mode.
Sport mode becomes less frantic
:happy2:
Don't know if Revo do a DSG map for the ed35 yet either. They didn't do one for the Golf R and yet again told me "it is in the pipeline, they just have other projects on the go first" which to me translated as "it will be around a year, if ever" if my experience of waiting for a DSG map for the Polo GTI was anything to use as a yardstick. GIAC may be able to do one though. Avoid Custom-Code at all costs for the DSG map though if you have Revo.
-
Another recommendation for DSG map. It works like a treat on my ed30... you just have to keep and eye on things so you dont forget to change and bounce off the limiter. :signLOL:

I agree, just waiting to hear back from Revo as they didn't do it when I enquired last time.
-
Revo still dont do the DSG map.......
But on the plus side the Milltek has arrived, and will be fitted friday and stage 2 coding done on monday. Brakes should be on friday too, providing spacers arent needed - Anyone have any recommendations where to ge them if I need them?
-

It wasn't so long ago, Oli, that I recall you saying that you never ever mod your cars

You could support a fellow forum member by getting them from here http://www.gnjmotorsport.com/products/H%26R-Trak%252b-3mm-%286mm-Per-Axle%29-Hubcentric-Wheel-Spacers-%26-Bolts-VAG-PCD-5%7B47%7D112%2C-Centre-Bore-57.1%2C-Bolt-Thread-14x1.5.html
Apart from there get ones by H&R or Forge.
-
will be interesting how you get on Oli with the clearance on the 19s, the 18s are a pinta for clearance and probably up there with the pescaras, my 18s need spaces to clear the AP 4 pot set up so still deciding which way to go :fighting:
-
Just about to test fit the brakes, I think they will need 5 or 8mm spacers.
I might also be getting some H & R coilovers and go stage 2+.............
-
Oil, why on earth doesn't this thread have any photos of your car?! Come on man, get some uploaded!

not got round to doing an update on this as been way too busy and not got time to sort out some decent pics but in essence its now running
Revo Stage 2, full set of Revo engine mounts, Miiltek TBE, eibach arbs and Bisltein B16s PSS10s and gloss diffuser, GTI badge removed and 35 on rump
its in for first service soon and then intake, 4/6 pots (proving a mare) and slap the red S3 rears on I have in garage

How did the brake fitting go Oli??
-
How did the brake fitting go Oli??
Spacers on order, Ive ordered 5mm and 8mm, I think the 8mm will be best to give a little clearance.
Exhaust is nearly on, will be finished in the morning. Then stage 2 coding will be on moday am, and brakes hopefully fitted in the afternoon :happy2:
-
Don't forget the longer wheel bolts too in that case! :happy2:
-
all sorted :happy2:
-
Sorry no pictures yet, but I will get some up after the brakes are done.
The exhuast is now fitted. I went for the race system resonated, and It sounds great. The standard system on the Ed35 sounded really good already and I didnt want to loose that, and Milltek have done it perfectly, the DSG pharps are slighlty louder, and maybe the exhaust slightly louder overall, but its very oem, which I like. What I have noticed is the increase in torque, and the engine feels looser - more freer reving, as Ive noticed on previous Milltek systems. One thing that is very good, is the slight hesitation that I had after each gearchange under full throttle, after the stage 1 map was put on, has now gone totally
Roll on monday, when Im off to Vanworx to get the stage 2 coding, and pick up the wheel spacers, to fit the brakes. I think it will be a good all round package then.
-
As said the exhaust went on last week, but Vanworx did the stage 2 coding yesterday with the linear throttle map - It feels a lot stronger torque wise, and mid range is definately better.
Today its on the ramp having the NQSBBK fitted, as can be seen, all very easy to fit(so my technician tells me ) , and will be off on roadtest shortly. Ive put 8mm H& R hubcentric spacers on it, to clear the wheels with longer wheel bolts.
Will let you know how they feel after roadtest :happy2:

ONe thing that concerns me about the NQSBBK is how little of the disc is actually used
-
I've put 8mm H& R hubcentric spacers on it, to clear the wheels with longer wheel bolts.
I was under the impression that the thinnest true hubcentric spacers for our cars started at 10mm. Could you post a pic of the spacer in your next update?
-

Don't think the pads are in on that shot Rich, mine go down to the inner edge of the disks........................

Officially ignored.
All I can say is the brakes are excellent, and that is after only 50 miles, on standard pads. Far superior to the standard brakes. Coupled with the stage 2 coding, the car is brillaint :happy2:

I did this too, but cut a circle out of cardboard so the overspray wasnt quite so far across the face of the disc.
Looks great, and i still think you made the right choice going for brembo decals!! :happy2:
-
Looks good Oli.
Worthwhile little mod machining those discs back the 7mm going to look very OEM.
Brembo decals look good actually, I love the Porsche/Dub brake thing....remember people putting 944 Turbo brakes on Mk1s and Mk2s years ago and then some BBS alloys to finish it off, the brembo thing looks contemporary though and holds its own like a modern day Cupra R
Glad the pedals coming to you which pads did you go for in the end?
-
I went for standard Ferodo pads at the moment, as the wrong DS2500 pads came through, and they feel great. I will run these for a while, and see how they are but for the sort of fast road driving I do they may well be adeqaute.
Ref the overspray, it came off after the first application of the brakes.
Ref the Brembo logo's I might take them off as they are a bit in your face........
-
Same here, first drive the overspray got burnt off. :happy2:
What's next then Oli?
-

Not like the M5 video!!! :scared:
:signLOL:
-
No sir!
-
Those brakes look brilliant...I prefer them with Brembo decals, especially when not on a Porsche :happy2:
I should be getting a set from Jonny this week, can't wait
P.S. Do you have any pics with the wheels on?
-
I have the rear spacers now, and will be fitting them this week, so will get pictures then. Plus this weather recently has been terrible and it hasn't been cleaned for a few weeks!
-
Quick update. I finally managed to get the car into work today to finish off the outstanding jobs;
Remove rear discs and paint the hubs black to match the front.
Fit rear 8mm hub centric spacers, to match front wheels.
Reset brake warning light using VCDS, due to NQSBBK not having brake wires.
Fit the lower upgraded engine mount, as supplied with the exhaust - Have noticed a little bit more vibration at idle since this has been fitted, is this really necessary as it certainly felt smoother before. I never noticed this vibration on any of my previous TFSI cars with Milltek exhausts and the mount fitted
And had a quick valet, before getting some pictures taken - not the best due to iPhone and poor light, but you get the idea
Really looking forward to getting it on the rollers at JKM next month to see what she's making, it certainly feels every bit of 330BHP that its supposed to be, and the midrange punch is phenomenal. I am told that the Edition 35/Golf R engine has a HPFP as standard, hence the better figure they seem to be making when compared to the ED30, and it would make sense considering the pretty poor mpg! - Can/Has anyone confirm this about the pump??
Enjoy :happy2:

looking good Oli :happy2:
-
pump is the same as on ed30 ,more power = new pump/ internals
-
very nice mate :happy2:
Can't wait to get my NQSBBK now
So you don't have the brake pad wear sensor fitted? I'm not planning to either, so you can just remove the warning via VCDS?
-
pump is the same as on ed30 ,more power = new pump/ internals
Do you know this for certain as its not what I'm being told. Plus my stage 1 ED35 made the same power as my stage 2 ED30 - 300bhp. I think I'll ring TPS today and get some part numbers. Be nice to clear this up. I've heard Rebo are releasing some new coding specifically for this engine and pump

If that's the case, it's a simple and cheaper to buy an oem fuel pump and retrofit to the 30 !
Interested to know this too...

Can you get the part number off yours Oli?
-
That's a very nice car.. :notworthy:
I've also been considering NQSBBK refurbed red with some simple brembo logos on them, much nicer and OE looking than having the porsche script IMHO.
Did they fit the glendales without spacers?
-
Did they fit the glendales without spacers?
Read the thread, he used 8mm spacers.
-
Re the HPFP, Revo Kev said something similar when he put the revised map on my car, along lines the new CDL engines have a better pump hence able to make better numbers than the ED30s did!
-
Re the HPFP, Revo Kev said something similar when he put the revised map on my car, along lines the new CDL engines have a better pump hence able to make better numbers than the ED30s did!
So begs the question, will one of these pumps fit the Ed30...??
If so, that would be a realistically cheap mod for some more top end shove..
-
I imagine the camshaft is different on the ED35 so maybe it gives a bit more pressure on the pump through that??
Interesting to know if that's true. Surely Hurdy would know as his R would have had this same pump??
@Saintsteve - no reason why the pump wouldn't fit?? The APR HPFP fits the CDL engines so should be a simple swap.
-
when Revo were revising the K04 my Ed35 was making more bhp than the Ed30 they used, my car is back in after its first service for some more witch craft related to this
-
Well according to TPS its the same pump, no. 06F127025K. So it must be witchcraft as to why the Ed35 makes better figures........

Why not JKM stables lee? As that's where the said horses were last seen
2 different dyno's isn't gonna prove anything.
-
ED35's and Golf R's do make more power than an ED30 after a remap. I'm still not sure why, they just do! Maybe it is one of those VW "don't tell anyone" modifications?
The pump is definitely the same as the Autotech internals still fit straight in.

Is the cylinder head the exact same John?
-
Yes, it is the same CDL block as the ED30.

All I know is my stage 2 ED30 made a healthy 305bhp at SRR and my stage 1 ED35 made 300bhp at JKM ??

Using the same dyno operators or the same group of different operators is always going to help to make comparisons. However, different weather on different days etc etc, always make any comparisons merely a realistic guide rather than an exact science.
What really matters is how she feels to drive and that the plotted curves are smooth and no issues are revealed.
-
As Robin said. Weather, atmospheric pressure and the fact that all engines are different. A newer engine will less carbon build up on the valves also :happy2:

I want to compare against pre revised map run I did at SRR

As Robin said. Weather, atmospheric pressure and the fact that all engines are different. A newer engine will less carbon build up on the valves also :happy2:
I understand what you and RR are saying, I've been down this avenue many times, with various cars. Both cars were approx on 10k and just over a year old. But as Ive said before the Ed35 is definitely getting better results from the same level of tuning, and I like to know how.
Are there any Revo stage 2 Ed30's going to JKM in March, as that will be the real test. And REVO might have released the new software for the Ed35 by then..., which apparently will release more potential!
All I know is it makes me laugh out loud when I drive it, its just so bloody quick at stage 2.

Perhaps it's all in the ECU
