Looking good Steve.  You still running me old BT downpipe on the GT28 turbo?

Check the length of some MK4 golf gti shafts as they may fit.

Hi ive now got a 2871 rebuilt by CR turbos with some fancy internals, Ah would the outer cv splines be the same?
Title: Re: MK5 Race Car
Post by: vRSAlex on December 08, 2012, 05:07:19 pm
They should be the same.  You should be able to swap the outer cv's to the MK5 versions if they are not.

Suspension = KW V3 with altered spring rates but for some reason ive got 50mm of rear wheel arch clearance on the lowest setting

Brakes = VW Motorsport 6 pots with 360mm floating discs

Wheels = Team Dynamics 1.2's with Porsche cup slicks

Today ive managed to fit the rad and fans in the front panel and tomorrow i'll have a go at the front mount intercooler.
Photo's to follow

Yep  Its a similar cooler as i run on the MK3 with 420bhp so should be fine I assume they are made / designed to fit in front of the crash bar but i wanted to push it back away from the bumper a bit as we do have the odd nudge, it just protects it a little more. Oh im not keen on the silicone hoses they supply so they will be changed.

When you toast the rotors I've got some fully AP fully floating ones that the cup cars are using with Caparo offset, if you don't mind some branding I'll sort you price wise.

Great project what size MCs you using and I'm assuming its NOT an AP pedal box

Hi i might have to take you up on the rotors, What size are they?

Ive mocked the pedal box up using the latest OBP box its not to bad but might change to a Tilton unit at a later date
They have supplied a 0.625 0.70 & 0.75, ive never used a bias box before so have a lot to learn.

Your input would be useful

Thanks Steve

Since this is a race car why not go for more hardcore coilovers (KW Clubsport for example)?

Cost mainly, So i'm going to have a play with spring rates, I only use Gas Gold's on the MK3 with high ib front springs this is enough to be a class record holder so i wonder what the gain would be on a side by side test.

Not sure B16 will do for a race car... My B16 is super for both road and track (were, depending on the track the maximum stiffness is 10/10) but only for track am an not sure it will do.
This is why I asked about the KW V3 (most reviews say these are equivalent)... From Bilstein I would chose from their racing line (aka non street legal) suspensions.

I didnt ive used a 2008 caddy hydraulic rack as recomended and used on the Touring car. I did ask around a while ago about using the oe rack and bypassing all the electrics but no one had any idea on how to do it  then VW Racing just said its easier to use a MK4 rack with special mounts or late Caddy.

Sorry no updates i'm busy wiring the front section and upgrading the rear shocks to clubsport.

Amazing work mate. The SQS shifter sells for 1470Euro + vat wich isn't cheap but how much would it help if coupled with the OEM gearbox ? I'm having big troubles with gear changes and couldn't solve the problem after trying about every option !
Title: Re: MK5 Race Car
Post by: steved on January 29, 2013, 01:57:39 pm
Am i right in saying the rieger spoilers are 100mm deep? I've designed this car to be rod legal just to allow me to test the car once ive made changes otherwise it could be a waste of a track day.

If you have a standard box you will need the SQS + E an electro magnetic assistance, as i have a Quaife six speed dog box i should be fine oh i think the shifters are £1279.56 no Vat.

Asi didnt have any mirrirs i bought the DTM style with built in indicators £30 pair similar to what i use on the MK3.

....'gillm' runs his trackday Mk5 GTI on the road with the Rieger front spoiler without any problems AFAIK. It's down to how low your suspension takes you. If you aren't gonna want to drive into any indoor carparks with steep ramps it shouldn't be a problem. My GTI is very low but I don't have road problems.

What's the point of replacing the OEM fuel tank with a new custom one ? Are you making room for a diffuser under the car ? :)
Title: Re: MK5 Race Car
Post by: steved on April 05, 2013, 05:34:19 pm
I didnt have one, The car was bought as a rolling shell + as you say the underside is now clear of any obstructions to allow a flat floor and diffuser.
Title: Re: MK5 Race Car
Post by: fuscobal on April 05, 2013, 09:41:31 pm
Good to know Steve, it's much easier now to build a diffuser. Have you got any info on the downforce brought by the air dam ? I've got the same air dam and VwRacing gave me a very disappointing answer > they didn't test it in a wind tunnel but their drivers said the car feels much more stable at high speed !?
Title: Re: MK5 Race Car
Post by: steved on April 05, 2013, 11:14:11 pm
Unfortunatley i dont have any info, this was fitted on recomendation by some of the cup drivers. i have made a splitter for the bottom that runs under the engine to  the subframe then another will cover the exhaust tunnel and have nact ducts, as im not allowed any external diffusers i will have to do most of the aero work under the car somehow.

Driveshafts time well this isnt as bad as you might think as im using the 02J box a have 108mm flanges but the inner cv's dont mate up so i simply changed that for one from a Transporter VR6 so the o/s shaft fits ok however the n/s shaft is 50mm to short, after a day of trawling through ETKA and the web all i could come up with is this.
