Been seriously thinking of selling the eddy & get a 5dr golfR dsg, while searching the autotrader I also checked out the e90 m3 dct 4dr...can be had for golfR money..very tempting..what will you choose??
-
if you're not bothered about all weather driveability then M3 all day long
-
Golf R or M3. Im not sure you can even compare them can you!!!! M3 all day long.
-
I'd choose the M3, though the performance of the R is probably more useable in normal everyday driving.
-
Common misconception that RWD = certain death in winter. Right tyres and they're fine. DCT even has a snow mode.
I ran my 135i all year round, my mate has run his M3 likewise on a set of Michelin Alpins. The rest of the world cope fine, we're slowly catching on to being on the right tyres for the season.
-
And just bare in mind the fuel economy - The M3 will guzzle, no matter how you drive it - My old V8 RS4, even driving at 60mph, would barely scrape high twentys, a Golf R will hit 40 - But do you buy this sort of car for economy........
If you go M3 get the updated sat nav model, I think 2012 onwards, it makes a massive difference. The M3 is also a £50k plus car and will have £50k running costs

Hi mate..won't b able to afford a 12plate m3,it's going to be 08-09 reg...how many miles did you get from a tank on the rs4 mate??i think the m3 might be just a bit better on mpg due to it having 7gears on the dct model..
-
As much as I love the M3 I think I'd honestly get a golf R. Absolutely love my GTI and all it's little extras. The only car I'd wanted a newer version of what I already have. I really do love the Golf R and will most definately be my next car!
-
M3 with winter boots are fine in this weather.
As much as I like the GolfR, it's basically an Ed30 with 4wd - the M3 look soo much more expensive (as they were).

This is the thing to watch out for. I would go the M3 all day if I could afford it (inc the running costs) :happy2:

I was just thinking the same thing; hate to think about the runing costs of a V8 M3...
If it's just the speed factor then a Stage 3 Ed30 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vT_WNb9sY4) are quicker.
-
A DCT M3 will do mid 20s, cost you a fair bit in rubber, but is no more to service than a Golf R. Late '09 gets you the updated iDrive/hard drive Nav.
They've also already taken a massive hit on depreciation, so you don't stand to lose that much, E46s are still in late teens. A Golf R has a fair way to fall, still being relatively new. They're also much nicer and cheaper on 18s.
-
Coming from modded eddy the pace of the m3 will probably be a bit of a let down, but I suppose it depends what you want from your car really.
The GolfR is obviously the ultimate all rounder, and most people I know who has done the switch from hot hatch based cars to NA super saloons always make the switch back to turbo power a year or two later.
Obviously the m3 has the looks, badge and noise, but from a everyday perspective I don't think it's all that, or what the media build it up to be.
However in life sometimes you just need to scratch an itch and find out for yourself. You could very well love it for totally different reasons compared to your current or previous vehicles.

I have a few of these, the R32 being one (always wanted one) but will have to see if they ever get scratched.

The M3 will be so much better to drive though. A Golf irrelevant of whether it has GTI, ed30 or R after its name will be completely numb and soft against an M3.
-
Pov's right, they're power restricted in 1st and 2nd, so unless you're breaking the law, you're probably going to feel like its slower than an ED30. Of course the handling is leagues ahead.

I agree with you from a on track perspective. On a every day driving point of view not so much. My experience with the e92 left me wanting more.
I personally think the e46 m3 is a much better car.
-
Golf R all day long.
We have 5 months of cold, slippery roads every year in this country, plus the Golf R's performance is more accessible in every day driving. Plus it's a Volkswagen. Plus no-one lets you in in traffic in an M3!

Why do you think the e46 m3 is a better car??i had one 2years ago & liked it but I thought the e90m3 is in a different league
-
All IMO, but
E46 m3 is a better drive
Has better engine in terms of what it's been designed to do. It just seems a more frantic experience than the 4.0v8
The e92 is too heavy
The e46 IMO is legendary especially thanks to the CSL version. The e92 just isn't as special. I'd still own one though, but more so on looks and status than the actual drive.
-
An e90 m3 will run rings around an e46 all day everyday.
The e90 is a quick car and it would need to be a special ed30 imo to be quicker.

M3 csl runs rings around the e92 m3 ;)
In rolling start straight line race a stage 2 plus eddy would destroy a e92 m3
-
but the OP was talking about a stock Golf R and a stock M3. No mention of modifications. So what a modified one will do is irrelevant.
-
Real world driving the e90 is quicker than the csl plus the smg is dog sh*t.
Rolling start and straight line!! How often does this happen?
A stage 2 plus may be marginally quicker in a straight line but it wouldnt destroy it. dsg vs dct it would be a close call.
Are your views based on the real world or youtube? :jumping:

The RS4 had a long term average of around 17 mpg, but my Ed35 is approx 23-25, as they are mainly used for town work, school runs etc, and me blatting about at the weekend.

It's more than marginally quicker.
We ran a stage 1 Cupra k1 vs a manual e92 m3 and the m3 was barely quicker to 140mph!
Not saying the m3 isn't a great car, I'm just saying to the OP to not expect to be blown away.
Edit
GIAC stage 2 plus manual ed30 vs m3

Roughly 5 hours to turn into a pointless pissing contest. :signLOL:

You can mod M3s too you know. Here's what a standard engine and some suspension work gets you.
If you want to get really silly, but still legal, Tom Schirmer's E92 gets around in low 7s
Can you can find me a 2.0T road legal VAG that'll do a 7:3x BTG in traffic? I've found some heavily modified TTRS that come close - so that's the kind of ballpark you need to be in to keep with an M3.
-
How about an M1
-
How about an M1
Awesome car!!!! :happy2:
-
Hmm - a good £10-15k more expensive, but it buys you exclusivity.
BTW, I'm not fanboi'ing here, just trying to give balance. You're asking about VAG vs BMW on a VAG biased forum, it's only ever going one way. The reverse would be true on a BMW forum.
The Golf R is a good car, drive both, see which you like. It's your money at the end of the day.

I wouldn't call those TTRS highly modified if we ate thinking of the same vid. Iirc they were just mapped cars.
Jonnyc in a stock turbo TTRS is quicker than alot of the GTRs and porkas around Bedford howfast never mind the m3's. And yes some of the GTR times he's beaten were done by pro drivers also on track tyres compared to his road tyres stock suspension attempt.
But well off on a tangent now. As for the 2.0tfsi, Audi tts, coilovers, stage 1 map, and ARB's has done a 7min49 full lap of the ring.
Really veered off track, my fault, I apologise.
-
How about an M1
The BMW M1, not to be confused with BMW 1 Series M Coupe
Unless he has a £150k budget of course.
-
Jonny's car was surely modified for that, he's even declared it as modded on the list - he had it mapped on the way home from buying it, didn't he??
http://www.howfast.co.uk/leaderboard/29th-october-2011/session-4-2pm/jonny-cocker
What spec was his car at in October last year?
Still a stunning effort, but the only measure of it being faster than a GTR/Porsche or not is surely putting Johnny behind the wheel of the same GTR/Porsche and seeing what he can get around in??
Interesting to see Mat Jackson's Focus RS on there. My mate owns that car now, it had B12s, a 375hp kit and some Alcon brakes. I also know the owner of the Talbot Sunbeam (Lotus) that's a second off Johnny too.
Good reading.

He wasn't driving his own car, it was the car of another forum member.
I think jonny is planning on blitzing all the other road cars in his TTRS once it's done. Will be interesting to see how he gets on. I'm planning on giving it a go too in mine, so should be good to see the difference between the two of us haha. :signLOL:
-
It still wasn't quite as stock as you alluded to though, eh? almost certainly had more power than an M3, and a lot lighter too :signLOL:
He's a very gifted driver, he could pedal a Fiat Panda around there faster than most people's exotica. It'll be very interesting to see how far his TTRS goes up that board :happy2:
-
Iirc it was running road tyres, arbs, lightweight alloys, exhaust map and intercooler.
-
if running costs weren't an issue i'd get the M3, whether in e90 or e46 mode - it has more kudos in my book than a golf R. however reality would probably end up seeing me get the Golf R in the end - a good car but doesn't really float my boat compared to the way the M3 looks.
-
I would suggest that a Golf R is the car to go for . You state you cannot afford a new version of the M3 so you are on a budget . The running Costs of an M3 will be expensive together with fuel costs . I think it also depends on what type of driving you do regularly . An M3 is so easy to get over 100 that you'll get caught on one of those days . Over 100 gets a ban generally . Also the people i have seen driving M3's go everywhere in 1st or 2nd to hear the engine noise :rolleye:
-
M3 plus a supercharger kit (fitted and running for about £7k) will give you 550+bhp :driver:

bet a modded golf is faster :signLOL: sure you can get that easy with a stage 6+ map and you'd have FWD so you could get about in the snow :signLOL:

The HPF E46 M3's are crazy quick too.
