Title: Forum downtime
Post by: zerolag on December 18, 2012, 09:18:31 pm
Does anyone else experience outages now and again?

Out of interest which account is the forum on:
http://tagadab.com/uk/virtual-servers

Perhaps the RAM is being maxed out...

It's usually due to problems with the Flux Capacitor.

I'm sure Steve P will be on the phone to Morty now

.
I thought that the forum's Admin team had plans for someone to takeover SteveP's role regarding IT aspects of running the site and, as a consequence, these ongoing server problems would be resolved. I understand that one member who has put his name forward to take over the role, is able to offer server improvements AFAIK.

So, what's the latest news about this, please?  :happy2:

And, yes, I still experience page loading problems.... Randomly - Some days clear of the problem and some not.

You posted it in the MK5 General area, need I say more??

Sure it's important, but who dies if YOU can't get on the forum!!  Get over it dude, no one has to answer to you or anyone if the server is having problems. What do you want, a refund??  :fighting2:

I know how much work goes into keeping a forum running.

However, as I personally put £30 into its donation pot to improve the performance, it can be frustrating at times. :)

I wasn't complaining; making an observation that perhaps we need some more horsepower in the server department.
I gave a donation before I posted my first post.  (I don't need a refund on that though, but thanks)
Yikes.

At the worst I have only noticed the forum being down for 5-10 mins.

I just go and do something else and try again later.

It's understandable this site takes a lot of maintenance and I dread to think what the server costs are for running this forum.
All the work that has gone Into this place is really appreciated :happy2:

Whatever, I just think you obviously feel very strongly about this subject as you reacted in quite a confrontational way to what seemed to be an observation of the sites performance. I'll speak for myself when say that I know this site is free (free to view, not to run), I enjoy coming here and the therefore make no assumptions about what I can expect in terms of reliability. I think it's logical that others feel the same.

Of course I feel strongly about it, it's been a huge part of my life fro the last five years!!

And I make no apologies for being 'confrontational' as you put it, as apart from the investment to run this place, it also takes a huge chunk of our own lives to keep things 'enjoyable' and to keep the feel the forum has which in turn keeps you guys coming back!

Nath, without sounding ungrateful for all the Admin team's efforts, isn't it about time that SteveP appointed his replacement on the IT side of running the site and that pressure was taken off the Admin team?

I am sure he would do if possible, obviously the correct person has not come along yet.

As for the forum speed. It is slow at peak times, sometimes even not loading at all. We can only apologise for this as Steve is just to busy with his new job to spend time sorting this out at present. When all is said and done it is only a slight inconvenience and all you have to do is visit other sites for a while until less busy. If people are getting to frustrated with the page loading speed then perhaps they are relying to much on this forum for there entertainment and communication needs.  :rolleye:

....I've been rumbled - I suppose that my post count gives me away. Sad aren't I. But, yes, I only feel frustrated by it if I've just completed a carefully worded (and of course beautifully wordsmith'd) reply post to then find I can't post it. So my workaround is to copy it into TextEdit and post it later. Or to do as you suggest and go and do something else.

I think that it's natural for folks on the internet to expect all web sites to load instantly and efficiently and we are in a way spoilt.  :happy2:

Either way it is curable and just needs the appropriate person to step into SteveP's shoes and sort out a server.
