Has anyone had this happen to them in the past?
It makes locking and unlocking noises, but wont open. I've spent an hour trying to get it to open by locking/unlocking/banging the door, but all to no avail.
Has anyone any ideas of how I can actually get the door open to try and find out what is wrong wih the mechanism? I cant get the door card off with the door shut to see whats wrong that way either.
Thanks in advance for any help :happy2:

Try this; unlock the doors ensuring the passenger side did unlock. Now push the 'thumb' part of the outside door handle (the part which may have the key barrel in) and push hard into the door until it clicks. If it does click, your door should open. You can then go ahead and get the necessary mechanism inspected/repaired.
Hope it works!

Thanks for the tip, but that didnt work either :sad1:

Hahaha I feel your pain. I had this happen to my rear passenger door out of the blue without warning. It didn't open for six months which was a pain when I had to take it for its MOT. The MOT tester went round and it magically opened. Feck knows why but Alex went to task and repaired the door lock module. Matto's done a walkthrough on this.
Taking the door card won't help - you just have a metal wall with a few small holes for wiring. You have to take the door skin off. You can't do this without opening the door.
I tried:
- simultaneously yanking both inside and outside door handles
- doing the above immediately after using the remote to close/open the door locks
- using bottom of fist to whack door lock below the handle and then trying the above
- squirting WD40 into where the door handle opens out
Nothing worked. Hopefully yours is in the temperamental phase (ie it'll be buggered up today and tomorrow it'll be fine). If so, get the door lock replaced immediately or you'll be like me with no opening door for several months.
At one point, I said to Alex that I was prepared to damage the door skin to get to the lock module.

I just did a google search and found out its another one of the infamous common faults.
I've been on for ages with the bash the handle lock unlock etc and it doesn't want to open..
I'll phone a few dealers tomorrow as they might have a couple of tricks up their sleeve for it.
Think this is the final straw, it's going the journey when it gets fixed, just don't know what car to get next !

I had this problem on mine, it's the electronic mechanism that fails (IIRC), luckily mine was covered by warranty. Apparently it's about £230 to get it sorted at a dealer (all in).
VCDS should show a fault code if it is the common failure

had it on mine before xmas..it wouldn't open then one day it opened so got it fixed straight away

Yep I had the 00929 fault code when I scanned it tonight.
Wouldnt have been so bad if it was one of the rear doors, but the missus aint too happy sitting in the back seat :signLOL:
Just means I'm off car hunting next week now

They've surely fixed this (and all our other common woes) on the Mk7

had/got this issue... cantget to the mechanism to change it out either as I cant get the skin off :sad1:

Dealer quoted between £250 - £350 for them to sort it out. The part costs £130 to buy. Parts bloke said theyve done loads of them.
On the plus side, got a test drive booked for a BMW 123d coupe tomorrow, been offered a whopping £8000 trade in for mine :surprised:

Have you tried using the key? Pop the cover off, theres a small tab on the bottom of the cover to get the tip of the key in.

The first time round I went to the dealers and the they are quite expensive. Second time took a gamble on eBay for 30 quid and it's been fine. Depends how flush you're feeling.

I would get it sorted asap. Will cause you lots of swearing and headaches if it locks shut and stays shut. Ask Stealthwolf.

Thanks so much, I found this post today and it worked for me. It took me a while to figure out why this worked though. My problem was my own making, rather than an electrical issue. I had recently removed the door skin to replace the window glass and regulator. It seems that when I reassembled the cable into the handle I had stretched it too far so that it was at its maximum reach. Once I had the door open I unclipped it and slotted it back in half way along instead of at full reach and the door now unlocks and can be opened with the handle again. Adding this comment here in case anyone hits the same problem as me when reassembling their door.

You sir are a ledgend I was worried all night I had terminal door lol issues after replacing my window regulator but in fact I had done the same thing and pulled the wire for the door too far adjusted it back to half way and door opens fine.
