Post by: deanogti on July 07, 2009, 06:15:29 pm
ive just orderd a us spec front grill today. but does any body know what the law is for no front number plate. is it just a fine or is it gonna be points or just a warning. and what if the plate is in the front window. this is a grey area for me and just would like to kno a little more.  :happy2:

As far as I'm aware, as long as the plate isn't below a certain height, it is legal.  However police take a dim view to people who fail to display them or leave them on the dash so be prepared for some attention.

You could claim that it fell off earlier and you're driving to Halfords to get some sticky pads?

I wouldn't even consider having a car without the front number plate on, You need to have one, and it needs to be clearly visible, in the fornt window will not do, neither will small plates.
With regards to knowing its against the law and still wanting to di it is just plain stupid imo, a number plate is a form of recognition on your car. If it were to get stolen what would police/DVLA look for, as it would not show up on an ANPR on motorways.
They really aren't ugly things to have on a car, so I don't get why people are so keen to misreprent them.

i have had my number plate in the front window for about a month and i'v driven past loads of police cars even been side by side with them while they have a good look at the car( you can't miss my car )and i have never been stopped once...
having said that i'v been told by an mot mechanic that as a result of a new law that your car will fail an mot if your number plate is not diplayed on the front of the car.
As i result i'm going to put mine back on as although car looks a lot better with it in window, its just not worth it...even though i have never been stopped... :happy2:

Not displaying is now £60 but no points ... AFAIK .... the fine used to be £30 but has just gone up - as it has for not wearing a seat belt.

....Not the best place for it in my opinion - You'll partially block the air intake to the radiators.

....Some browsers have issues with PDFs. The ones which SteveP posts actually crash my browser or stop me posting in the same thread (weird!) and I've reported it to Apple.

Maxitrol's link loads an .ahx format and not a .pdf - Doesn't load on my system either.

What if its displayed in the window?

Or is it a case that it has to be on the front of the car?

The plate is supposed to be infront of the headlights, just so everybody knows.
