Title: top gear returns
Post by: Andy on January 17, 2013, 08:28:00 pm
copied of another forum

Top Gear returns on Sunday 27th January (TBC) at 8pm on BBC2 and BBC HDSome spoilers:Acknowledging that the India Special wasn't quite as spicy as it could have been, Jeremy, Richard and James will venture to Africa in search of the source of the Nile, just like the British explorers of yore. Only they'll be doing it in some fantastic used wagons they bought online for £1,500: a BMW 5-Series Touring, a Volvo 850R, and a Subaru WRX with a toilet seat for a hood scoop.Jeremy commissions students taking Coventry University automotive design to make him a car that's even smaller than the Peel P50 he drove a few years ago. That's how he ends up trapped in a scooter-looking thing."Consumer Affairs Editor" James attempts to turn a Bentley Continental GT into a rally car, and they say that the way the two-ton luxobeast handles on a muddy stage "may surprise you." Hmmm...The guys will be participating in another U.S. road trip, this time driving from the Nevada desert to the Mexican border in the new SRT Viper, the Lexus LFA, and an Aston Martin Vanquish.Another Big Race like the famous Bugatti Veyron vs. James' plane episode from a while back. This time, they'll be racing from Wembley to Milan to catch a soccer match with Jeremy in a Shelby Mustang GT500 and the other guys in a train.Richard and Jeremy redesign a Fiat Multipla to make it into the ultimate car for old people. (Not just the ultimate car for people with poor taste.)Remember car football? It's back, except this time it's car rugby. I can't wait to see how this will go down, and then try it myself, and then get arrested. Again.Road tests of the Toyota GT86 and Pagani Huayra, and a hot hatch battle between the Ford Focus ST, Renault Megane RenaultSport Cup 265, and Vauxhall Astra VXR. Which FWD street fighter will come out on top?

I'd rather watch 5th Gear and Wheeler Dealers any day of the week. I don't mind bits of it, but most of it is gimmicky rubbish, and wastes a lot of time which could be utilised on proper car reviews and more useful challenges and group tests. But then I suppose 6m people wouldn't watch it.

It's like 20/20 cricket; entertainment for the innane, Daily Mail reading general public.

Well I certainly don't fit your demographic Ian.

I watch Top Gear because it is a damn good entertainment programme that is centred around cars. If you are after something more highbrow then you are on a hiding to nothing.

I love the banter between the three guys but I get bored of seeing them doing more or less the same crazy stuff. Jeremy Clarkson's review of the Mk5 GTI on Top Gear in 2005 is the reason I booked a test drive the following day and then ordered mine.

Apparently after Top Gear is the piece about Colin McRae, part 3 of the Stirling Moss/Jackie Stewart series.

Sorry, that was a bit harsh. One shouldn't post when in a bad mood  :ashamed:.

I would however like to see more of the quality of motoring journalism to which Robin refers, as it has been sadly lacking in recent series in my opinion. I find the challenges a bit same old same old, and whilst I found them entertaining and amusing in earlier series, They haven't really moved it on. Just my opinion though, we're all different and like different things.

I am really looking forward to the Colin McRae programme. Really really enjoyed both the other 2, its such a shame that McRae (and Richard Burns) left us to soon.

The first 2 are being shown again, starting with the Stirling Moss one on BBC HD this Sunday at 21.00, sky channel 169 or Freeview 102. Patrick Stewart's enthusiasm is infectious.

I think anything regarding Colin McRae is going to be a bit controversial especially regarding the circumstances of his death.

I admired him as a driver. I even had him staring at me in the bar after the Hong Kong - Beijing Rally which he won.

TG stopped being informative years ago, but I still watch it for the automotive Mr Bean comedy it is. I know some/all of the accidents are staged but Its worth watching.

That's a relief.  It's not often I disagree with you, but I was about to!

I'll add my vote to the growing concensus on here - TG can be entertaining, but with each series I hope for new ideas instead of re-hashes.  And more often than not, I'm slightly disappointed.  Fifth Gear just seems so old fashioned now by comparison.  Where are the experts who can also entertain?

Oh, and the Moss / Stewart programmes were superb, not least because they still have so much to say.  That aspect will sadly be missing from McRae's programme; I hope that the programme doesn't suffer as a result.

I'm glad top gear is coming back, I really missed one of their great adventures being on at christmas (my all time favourite is the south america 4x4 special). For me top gear works when the 3 presenters interact with each other on the adventures or challenges doing the things we can't afford, or have the time or privilege to do. I except that it has been slightly tired of late and hope that it will return to its former glory. I love the cheap car challenges, the big races and of course the great adventures, when they get it right it is one of the few things on tv that genuinely makes me laugh.

Perfect escapism for a sunday night before the start of yet another working week!!

I think if you want to see some middle+ aged men having a laugh with some cars then its your you, if you prefer more serious journalism then maybe watch VBH/Needell and the gang, personally I love top gear, although I tend to find half of the "Stars in a reasonably priced car" to be a boring and sometimes I do fast forward through that  :signLOL:

I thought it was ok, looking forward to the Nile episode, the last series was utter sh*te IMO.

I think there's still a lot of people (me too for a while) struggle to realise that it is a car based entertainment program that is sold all over the world and in it's current format makes the BBC an absolute fortune so it aint gonna change anytime soon.

I do however think they could do a little more proper car reviewing than they do, there's loads of fantastic cars out there and it's a shame not to see them get the "old fashioned" Top Gear treatment. 5th gear do a reasonable job but I think that Clarkson and Hammond are really good at proper motoring journalism.

Top Gear is an entertainment programme these days, three guys having a laugh, messing about and attempting to disprove "Global Warming" theories.

I dont take it too seriously, just sit back and enjoy.

If you want wall to wall road tests, watch 5th gear  :stupid:

Surely people should know what to expect by now. . .

.........you would assume so but obviously not!

It's an entertainment programme based around cars. I can't believe anyone watches it for a review on a certain car as we did 15-20 years ago. We watch it to see a 800k hyper car going sideways around a track and for some stupid home made vehicle to be trundling around the roads of Surrey.

As an entertainment programme it fails, IMO. The jokes are tired and we have all heard and seen them too many times before for them to be still entertaining.

I don't have any expectations of the programme other than to be entertained but in a refreshing way. So I found it disappointing.

EDIT: I did enjoy the supercar and rally Bentley parts though.

The part about the small car (P45) was far too long & the banter/jokes are very scripted - but i'll still watch every episode without fail   IMO the best parts of the show are when all 3 of the lads are on a road trip or doing a group test.

I went to school with the rally driver they had on in the Bentley last night :)

My thoughts on this are if you don't like it turn the damn thing off.  :fighting2:

It has run for a fair few series now in this format and it's perceived as working in their eyes so why would they change it.

I enjoyed it and that may be because I have low expectations perhaps others should re-asses theirs.

My thoughts on this are if you don't like it turn the damn thing off.  :fighting2:

It has run for a fair few series now in this format and it's perceived as working in their eyes so why would they change it.

I enjoyed it and that may be because I have low expectations perhaps others should re-asses theirs.

Hopefully they've saved some of the better stuff for later in the series.

If you want to watch real car tv then the interweb is where you need to look, not mainstream bbcsnooze.

Take a look at the motortrend stuff, just fantastic:

Junkyard barracuda:

Jag rat rod:

66 Buick:

^^^^ No VW though  :sad1:

Ford Focus ST, Renault Megane RenaultSport Cup 265, and Vauxhall Astra VXR. Get rid of the new ST from that list, add the new Mk7 GTI or R and see what's cooking!

I was kind of disappointed in that. Thought it was pretty unnecessary.

Im sorry...?? This is probably the most boring series so far... Jeremy and Richard have become poor caricatures of themselves and are desperately trying to be funny.

Even the episode with the aston, LFA, Viper in america was so dull I ended up turning off. Everything is so predictable and contrived.

I think its had its day.

I get my motoring tv fix from watching Chris Harris online videos now.

Oh and Re-Twickers... they re-turf it in the offseason anyway so presume that was done prior to an already scheduled re-turf.

I fully agree with some of the points above, it's a bit too predictable and some of the features do drag on for what seems an eternity, gap filling down to budget restrictions I'd imagine but  must admit it this series has made me laugh quite a bit more than the last one. I think it's saving grace is that it is well made, you can tell the BBC are involved whereas %th gear as good as it is just hasn't got the same quality production about it.

Worst top gear ever !!!   I walked away from it, there are so much great cars out there at the moment and they keep on with the same old gags !

Oh what will we do this week "I know, let's do the same thing we do every series build a car and fcup it up"
Auto record on sky switched off !!

Rant over
Title: Re: top gear returns
Post by: swgti on February 25, 2013, 08:19:29 am
The old folks car I thought was quite funny in parts, BUT did it really need to be in two parts and take up half the show??? er no, too many of their stupid stunt features are far too long.

I am however really, really looking forward to the Xmas special over the next couple of weeks.

My biggest fault with it now is that it is far too predictable.

Or what we really want is people that defend top gear to the hilt and say don't " watch it then " with comments like its an "entertainment programme now"

The fact is its been an entertainment programme for a while now but about 4 - 5 years ago it had a good blend and mix of entertainment and cars now its not !!

Or what we really need is a forum with no posts as people are expected to keep there opinions to there selfs !

But at the same time as saying "just don't watch it then" when you see a comment you don't like why not just ignore it ?
Instead of trying to give people an ear bashing, for there opinions

I would of ignored this like I do with all other comments I disagree with but seems this seems to be aimed at me and a few others that's posted simelar and time to put a stop to it I think

I watch top gear in the hope that one day I might actually see a review of a car I would want to buy.

Time to delete this thread now and all others where someone might have an opinion on something

Because it's becoming as tedious as the standard R32 vs Edition 30 thread. There is no answer. Some people like it, some people don't. Some episodes are good, some aren't. Get over it.

I'm telling you do what you have stated in your own post, as this is obviously becoming tedious to you !

It's more about the way in which you seem to dismiss other people's comments and say " same old posts get over it "
Or " just don't watch it " if your that bothered just don't comment or read the thread !

I've all ready said this in the previous posts

The funny thing is you seem to expect Top Gear to be something different that it is. The format has been established for some time now so why is it always a surprise when it isn't 60 minutes of car pornography? That is why all these comments are becoming so boring. It's like watching Eastenders and expecting a David Attenborough documentary.

For what it's worth, I like some parts of TG and not other parts of TG. A TG review by JC in 2005 of the Mk5 GTI is what made me arrange a test drive the following day and the rest is history!
