So, after departing with the Pirelli last year I'd decided I wanted another R32 and I was being quite specific on the colour and spec I wanted.
After a few months and losing out on one or two cars I decided to broaden my search as a few people had asked why I hadn't considered a Golf R. Honest truth is I just thought they would be way out of my price range, but after some searching a very hard negotiating I found a car I was over the moon with and made the deal!
So here she is on arrival at home (in the ice and snow), and subsequently getting her into the unit for a quick clean/once over.

In fairness the main dealer had done a pretty good job of prepping the car (probably after what I told him I do for a living  ), but the interior was in dire need of a touch of DMR magic so that was the area I have concentrated on first. No before pics I'm afraid.

The the modding started! First up was the OSIR footrest:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGreenouse%2FGolf_R%2FIMG_7226_zpse4e98c77.jpg&hash=bbb4ef145953ff6421573b8be9d1eacec682f14f)
Then the Black front VW badge (what a PITA that was to do!!)
Before:

After:

Got the rear one to do once the Silver vinyl I have ordered arrives.
Lots more to come over the following weeks!
So today I had some spare time to get the wheels off and get them decontaminated, polished and sealed, and also get the very dull looking calipers sorted and new R Spring clips I had fitted.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGreenouse%2FGolf_R%2FIMG_7429_zpscd9bfcd4.jpg&hash=11f922d9e929648a9364ede87f731fb7f12ad83a)
Forgot to take some befores of the rears but they were very faded and dull!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGreenouse%2FGolf_R%2FIMG_7395_zps7519d462.jpg&hash=7ac49eb6f3745b67135501cb7724050aa8cdae58)
The wheels were covered in tiny scratches and were also lacking in any 'finish'. So they had a quick machine polish and were then sealed before refitting onto the car.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGreenouse%2FGolf_R%2FIMG_7385_zps033d1670.jpg&hash=8fc512f24bdaf6ee10d865aa0ac08aff0f51f4d2)
So as she stands today. I've yet to do anymore than wash the bodywork, so a full 2 stage machine polish will be done one day next week.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FGreenouse%2FGolf_R%2FIMG_7381_zpsb7b24767.jpg&hash=f3709b8241fe7b2dd5e3ad6a41dde82b6248f2ea)

Inital impressions are very positive indeed. The R interior is a great place to spend time with lots of spec and a definite improvement in build quality and ergonomics. I'm much happier with the manual gearbox too and both the standard power and exhaust note have surprised me at how good they are. I have done the flapper mod on the exhaust until I can free her up with a Milltek.
Thanks for reading! :happy2:
-
Very nice :happy2:
-
Nice one Nathan. Looks really sweet, great spec too. Hope you enjoy her. Your Pirelli was a treat, I can only imagine this one will be too.

Not really a big fan of silver cars but that is my favourite colour so far in the R and TBH I've never actually seen one in silver before so I'm figuring its pretty rare ! It really shows of the lines on the car aswell which I've never really noticed before !
Lovely looking motor
-
Wondered how long you could resist before posting it up!!!!
What happened to waiting till the mods were done?
Lovely car, looks stunning in the flesh. Very jealous tbh!! Finally a Golf R with the proper amount of doors.
-
Thanks all! :happy2:
Yes Eddie, I think cruise may have to be sorted at some point, the colour highline sounds a bit expensive though! :scared:
Yes Brian the Silver is quite rare as most seem to Blue or White.
@ Wild Bean, was I drunk when I offered you this 'ride'? :rolleye:
@ Chungy, Black wheels FTMFW!
@ Hurdy, Love you too pal!  I got the VW Driver R special the other day and your pic is truly scary! :signLOL:
@ Rich, stating the bleeding obvious again!

Love the look of the front on the R, so aggressive. Something the standard mk5 r32 truly lacked. Very nice mate....

Thanks. I've never heard of 'Health to enjoy' before and now three times in this thread!
-
Congrats on your purchase. Glad you stayed on the VW scene. How do you find it compared to your old ED30?
Looking forward to more pics once it's been corrected.
-
Thanks. I've never heard of 'Health to enjoy' before and now three times in this thread!

Some great outdoor pics in the warm evening light too - Real winners! :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
-
very nice indeed, looks better than an m135i and i think you would have to be mad to pay the premium for an rs3 over one of these
-
Looking good :happy2:

OMG
I love it.
(You make me sick you utter sh*te)

Do it Nath. You can rest easy knowing the flanges and lambda bosses won't go rusty :signLOL:
-
Lovely motor, but for some reason, the black alloys just don't do it for me.
-
Simple, yet effective.
Nice to see the anti-auto movement is gathering pace :signLOL:
-
Snap Nath ! Exactly the same as mine only I've got silver alloys. Same mods too so far. The front badge is a pita to do. The rear I did with a blade at the bottom and pry it enough to get a couple of cable ties through the gaps. Wiggle them upwards and give a little pull and off it comes.
Thinking of matt / satin grey for my wheels and as mine came with 18s from the factory it has the silver insert lights so want to swap them for the black ones. Have an o/s light already just looking for a passenger one now.
Cars looking great though mate. :happy2:
Chris.
-
Looks perfect Nathan, I'm very jealous!
Loving the blue needles too.
( :surprised: :surprised: Can I see a water mark there that you missed!! Tut tut.)

Don't get me started on this, the Milltek on my R looks hideous after 6 months.
-
What a good looking car , the R is such a sweet machine! :happy2:
-
Thanks again everyone for the kind word! :ashamed:
To answer a few questions.......
@ Mandy, must be a trick of the eye!
@ Stealth, too early to say as I'd need to drive her on track to compare, but so far looking very favourable. :happy2:
@ Bowie, be good to get together at some point. And there was me thinking the Reflex ones were rare!
@ Carl, pop up anytime bud. It's been a while since I talked you into spending money on mods! :signLOL:
Once again thank you one and all for such great feedback on the car so far!
-
Nice and clean! Quite like it in silver, don't see many in it. Looks good on the black wheels.

lovely car, and i would probably give my left testicle for one... but personally i wish you'd gone for an R32. like you said in the car when you were driving me from the station, they just seem a bit more special somehow

I don't want to spam up Greeners thread here, but you're exactly right Steve. They've agreed the replace the flanges for SS variants (2nd visit for adjustments), which questions why you'd even think of fitting Mild Steel components in the first place.
-
Because china sells it really cheap?
I suppose most people who fit a exhaust system will never see it again after its been fitted so wont know. My milltek failed twice and they tried to refuse warranty. Got it sorted in the end but gonna stick with the likes of scorpion and BCS for future projects.
-
BTW I think this is my fave colour along with blue for the Golf R. Rare too havent seen it before :happy2:
-
Just seen this! Lovely Nath
-
Looks fantastic! Going by the YouTube videos it doesn't sound too good, probably better in person with an aftermarket zorst :happy2:
-
Very nice indeed.
If when I move from the Ed30, I will be going to Golf R next, but of cause I'd have to have it in white, as my last 3 cars have all been white.

Was it hard to do the vw badge?twist and pull?
-
Noice! :happy2:
I'd have had a Steel Grey one if I could've found one! :sad1:
The badge won't twist off. You have to take the front grill off (not easy in itself) and then the badge is a nightmare as VW have decided to plastic weld to of the clips to the grill!! :fighting: :fighting:
-
so the question we all want answered, is it faster than a R32 :popcornsoda:

I'd be a bit wary of that place. The garage is in a total sh*thole area and the website lists an accountants (http://www.mbiaccountants.com) as the address. It seems to have sprung up from nowhere too, yet has a massive stock list and loads of Golf Rs. Who know's where they're actually keeping all these cars.

I'd like to think so. But then again I've been known to say that on these very pages before! :signLOL:
Liking the silver a lot. :happy2:
There's a really high spec one on PH at the mo' if anyone else wants one? DSG, Dynaudio, RNS, reverse cam, bucket seats, 19" alloys, foldy mirrors, privacy glass, bluetooth...
From a garage in Huddersfield?
Yeh thats the one. He has a few R's and by the looks of his website he's sold a few too! I know someone else who has their eye on that one!
Duly noted Andrew. Thanks! :happy2:
-
No problem, whilst I certainly don't want to put off anyone buying a car from there, I'd definitely advise of treading with a more than usual amount of caution.
-
Lovely car - seems natural progression is pointing to the R for some of us.
-
Nice car mate, really like the colour too..I be gettin a golfR or rs3 in the next 5months..still can't decide but will def think about a silver one

They are two totally different cars. The toss up would be between the R and S3, but an RS3 is a no brainer.
-
Lovely car. I have rising blue R - don't see many silver ones kicking about!

I'd have an R over an RS3. Fact.

Also liking the silver with the black wheels. :happy2: The only other silver R I'd seen was one with silver 18s and it looked awful.

Not a chance on that for me, RS3 any day of the week.

Most probably I be gettin a golfR cause I can't justify the extra 8-10k for a rs3

All I will say is, your next purchase should be Red and with Black 19's on... Then I'll be jealous as hell mark
-
All these R's suddenly appearing, very nice. Made me take a look for one today........
On the subject of RS3, I looked at one but they just feel so dated in the cabin compared to the golf, but the engine is a peach!

Lovely looking car mate. Loving the silver :happy2:

So finally had a bit of time during the week to get the paintwork properly detailed and protected. Pics aren't great as it was dark out by the time I took the pics!
So onto the Plastics including A Pillars, Rear Lights and Door Mirrors.

LSP of choice was 2 x even layers of Auto Finesse Desire (awesome Wax to use and smells heavenly), and I'll probably stick a coat of Tough Coat over her in the next week or two.
Managed to get the LED number plate lights sorted after trying two different types of CanBus bulbs to no avail, then having to put extra inline resistors in to finally get them to work without the bulb out warning on the dash!
Lots more bits and bobs to come over the next few weeks! :pomppomp:
-
Looks awesome. I must come and see this in the flesh some time.
-
.
Silver really shows off the R's body styling very well - as do your pics, Nath. I love the shoulder running all the way back to the tail lights.
-
Awesome Nath :notworthy:
-
She's a real beauty Nath, even better in the flesh :happy2:
-
Cheers chappies! :drinking:
She feels more like my car now she's been given a good going over!

Looking good mate. Feeling left out now. Gonna have to get some pics of mine up. Won't be as clean as yours though I don't think !
Chris.

I meant to ask what number plate LEDs you used ?

I guess you can use any W5W style canbus led as long as you use these:

So, a couple of little updates but a very aesthetically pleasing one's nonetheless!
We have gone from this:

Big thanks to Alex @ Chameleon for sending me some vinyl to play with! :drinking:
Also upgraded all the interior bulbs to LED's including the puddle lights (will get some pics of these at a later date).

Puddle lights as in the wing mirror one's ? Were they easy to do and what bulbs are they?
When I got mine all the interior were already LED (previous owner) which I quite like.

Yes buddy. Bit of a PITA to be honest as you have to dismantle the whole mirror assembly to get to the bulbs. Easy enough to do though if you take your time!
-
that probably explains why he didn't bother
-
Cars looking good with the new LEDs!
Did you change the boot one too?w5w think it is
Regarding the puddle led,it is pita to do,took an hour to do both
But end results are well worth it
What's the next mods?
-
looking very nice mate
love the rear badge mod
keep up the good work :happy2:
-
Thanks chaps!
@ PMOKY, yeh did the boot LED too. I think the puddle lights took me about half an hour for both. But then again I have had MK5 door mirrors apart before so wasn't to worried about giving it a good ol tug!
ST2 next!

Where did you get the LED's for the number plate and puddle lights? Might give it a go.
You got Stage2 sorted yet? I'm in the process of getting mine sorted too :happy2:

I tried two different types of canbus LED's but they still threw up errors. It depends on which MY your R is but I fitted some extra in line resistors and they worked! The puddle LED's can be any W5W LED, no canbus needed on those! :happy2:
No ST2 not sorted as yet. Next week maybe? Just waiting on the exhaust!
-
Son it's the no plate which throws the codes. I'll check eBay - bound to be some on there.
Check the recent purchases thread - took delivery of a BCS downpipe and cat today :happy2: what you looking at ?
-
I see that yeh!
What are you doing about the rear section? I'll be going down the Milltek route! :happy2:
-
Matching to the standard back end for now - no real gains so that can wait.
The restriction being the downpipe/cat this does change the tone slightly I've heard, build and quality looks spot on.
-
I've done the flapper mod on the standard exhaust for now and she does make a great noise above 2500rpm!
-
I had a look at that, might get out a tie wrap this weekend to try it.
-
Did the flapper mod last week. Noticeably louder on idle when the exhaust is hot.
Chris.
-
didnt do mine, I'll try and get round to it before the new one goes on so I can compare it :P
