Title: Aftermarket Xenon Kits (and the dreaded Wiper Motor Fail!)
Post by: mtj2k on February 09, 2013, 04:54:16 pm
I'm getting excited about my Xenon-look headlights coming soon through the group buy on here. www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,61320 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,61320) and am trying to figure out what sort of Xenon kit to fit.

First off, im not trying to buy cheap so that i break my car just don't want to spend more than i have to. Ill go OEM if i have to.

So after hours of googling and going insane  :stupid: i've read loads of scary stuff about aftermarket HID kits causing problems with the wiper motors and causing them to let go after 3-4months of use. Every discussion seems to point to these 'special' kits made by well-doneHIDs http://www.welldonehid.com/epages/eb3940.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/eb3940/Products/Xen_A38P_H7 (http://www.welldonehid.com/epages/eb3940.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/eb3940/Products/Xen_A38P_H7) designed for the A3. They're not exactly cheap and the discussions going around dont state what these kits have differently from any others on the market. Can anyone share some personal experience or advice on this?

1. Anyone had HID's fitted for over a year with no prob's?
2. Links please

TIA  :happy2:

Do you have to link it up on a relay?

Had my HID kit in for over a year, I got mine off eBay for about £40, just make sure you get a canbus error free kit and don't pay over £60 for a kit as they are all the same Chinese kits with different stickers on, the ones you have linked are a stupid amount to pay for a kit.

OP - what did you go for in the end?

I've been running the Depo projector units for a month now and am tempted by some aftermarket HIDs to increase the light output!

I will be fitting my Xenon-look headlights in the next week or two. Have been thinking about fitting a HID kit along with it.

So anybody got links or pics of the light beams?

Also what colour temp did you go for? I was thinking 4.3k or 5k.

Have bought from Hids Direct before so will take a look on there.

Sorry don't mean to highjack the thread :ashamed:

Do you want the real xenon's or xenon look headlights?

The GB is for xenon look headlights and yes is the cheapest place to get them :happy2:

Real used OEM xenon's will set you back about £500-600.

Do you have canbus error-free kit? I'm thinking 6000k is the one to go for?

This looks the best value one out there: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200784303489?var=500071534814&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Thanks  :happy2:

Canbus error free is a lie, as there is no such thing. But for the sake of arguments let's just say there is.
I don't have any sort of error cancelling devices on my lights, as I tried it with them and it didn't work. They work fine without. 4300k are closest to OEM, and provide the best possible light on the road.

If you don't have projector headlights then stick with normal bulbs (aimed at people in general).

I have been looking at the kit from Hids Direct:

http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/h7-35w-ultra-canbus-hid-conversion-kits/

http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/h7-ultra-35w-slim-canbus-hid-xenon-conversion-kit/

What's the difference in these kits? Does the 2nd one have slimmer ballasts?

Looking to go for the 5000k kit.

4300k will be better for on-road light and look OEM.

The difference is that the "slim ballasts" are "slim" and the other ones are fatter, thus harder to place. I'd go with Slim ones, when I buy a new kit and re-do it, bumper will be coming off, headlights out, and ballasts will be mounted underneath the headlight for a completely discreet install.
I currently have a 4300k kit with slim ballasts, the install looks relatively tidy.

Ok thanks :happy2:

So regarding MOT's, do HID's need to be removed? If yes, then a discreet install would be extra hassle come MOT time right?

No they don't.

No they don't.

So HID's in projector headlights will pass the MOT? I wasn't sure but thought HID kits are not road legal in the UK?

HIDs in any type of headlight will pass the MOT so long as the beam pattern is correct.. ergo normally only in projector headlights.

funny enough i just had mine MOT'd on Friday. I have Hella projectors and 6K HID and the beam scatter is awesome!

Anyway took them out for the test; worried about not having washers and leveller etc. they guy failed me on not putting a halogen bulb in properly!! He told me only cars that come out of factory with Xenon's require the additional kit to be fitted and functioning, re-installed the HID kit and he levelled it and passed with flying colours.

Basically put. HIDS in reflector headlights is not a smart move as the beam pattern will be everywhere and it just looks stupid. Plus you will only p1ss off other road users - Don't be that guy!

If you REALLY want better light and can't stretch to Xenon headlights (circa £400 these days) I would get some after market Projector headlights and the best HID kit you can afford. You might have to do the 6pm mod to rotate the bulb by 180 dgs to get a better beam pattern but that depends on the HID kit.

As mentioned above...
1. Aftermarket Depo Headlights work fine - beam pattern is fine. Sure eBay have plenty for around £200.
2. Adding a HID kit will not fail a MOT unless they are levelled wrong (same as all lights), the kit is faulty and not putting out light correctly or your tester is a tool
3. Best light output IMO is 4300k...unless u want a bluer light then go for 6000k
4. Can bus error free means nothing - similar price anyway if it makes u feel better.
5. Only thing u need to do is have xenon without shutter programmed in VCDS..
6. Slim ballast is easier to attach to the light..I have a bigger ballast but it is screwed in and also stuck with no more nails pads - no problem

I hope this reassures you. It's a top upgrade..!  :happy2:

I've run the same 10000k HID kit in 3 of my cars, I've never had any issues with it blowing wiper motors up?! Not even a bulb has blown.

Put hid kit on and week later no wipers, have new motor, ruled out stalk and bonnet catch, have power to motor and a low constant voltage down motor signal wire, guy that's looked at it thinks the CECM is at fault.

Worst picture ever.

4300k is closest purchasable bulb to the purest light (in terms of colour temperature) and lumens output (what you can actually see with) Meaning theoretical best projected distance.
Best 4300k bulbs can produce over 3000 lumens, 6k you're looking at 2100 or thereabouts.
I have 4300k Osram Nightbreaker D1S in and the light output is very good. Just a shame my lenses are stonechipped to buggery.

That's what I had to drive with before replacing my bulbs. The seller put osram bulbs in as I found an empty packet in the boot after purchasing the car which was meant to be valeted  :stupid: c**t.
I've now fitted bi xenon copy headlights and H7R hid kit to the lights. Should have just purchased the H7 but someone recommended them for the oem headlights and they apparently don't dazzle on coming vehicles.
