I topped up some engine oil today and noticed underneath the oil cap there was that mayo looking substance which am sure I read about somewhere but can't remember exactly what and where, I do remember its something to do with the PCV system? By the way I have the bsh plate so don't think I should have any issues regarding PCV, does anyone know the problem if there is one?

I thought it was partially something to do with frequent short journeys... could be wrong though.

Do you do lots of short trips?
If so its just condensation that does this, wipe off and be done with it for the time being.
If not check your headgasket....are you using any water?

It is common this time of year to have some mayo under the filler cap if the car isn't given sufficient time to burn off any water vapour in the oil. If there is no sign of oil in the coolant header tank and you tend to travel short journeys i would be inclined to believe it is condensation and not the head gasket. My suggestion would be to take the car for a couple of spirited drives or Italian tune ups :)

It's normal for GTI's to do this as other's have mentioned a nice long drive will soon clear this up!I shat myself after I had bought my Edition30 as I was 100% sure my head gasket had gone but my local Vag specialist laughed his sock's off when I told him and said they all do it!

Yeah mine does it too , nowt to worry about of youre not using water and only doing a couple of short journeys a day.
-
Perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

As above, nothing to worry about. Although most say it is caused by condensation not being vented off due to short runs, my personal experience was different. About 3 years ago I got exactly the same issue but my daily motorway commute of 60 miles should have meant I didn't get this problem. I'd clean the cap once a week but every time I checked it again it had come back. It wasn't until the warmer weather came that it stopped doing it. Strangely I never had the same problem in following winters. I put that down to it having been serviced and fresh oil.
What I'm trying to get at is, yes it's nothing to worry about but don't expect it to disappear forevermore if you go for a longer run - you might just have to wait for summer!

Cheers guys, that's cleared out of my mind then
