Title: What about a new little section.
Post by: Top Cat on February 12, 2013, 04:53:53 pm
I was thinking of asking SteveP to add a small new section, no child boards or stickies, just a simple section for car valuations only.
Called  ' Whats my car worth'.
We get lots of threads asking 'Whats my car worth'  and half of them are well meaning IE people don't seem able to evaluate their cars worth, based on whats currently for sale. And the other half are just thinly vialed attempts at advertising their car, pre sale.
I personally cant see the value in asking current owners 'whats it worth' but clearly lots do.
We have to remove some threads, get complaint's about others and also a lot of For sale threads end up getting people telling them what it is worth in their opinion.  :fighting:
Hopefully this new section might cure a bit of this and the above problems.
What say the masses. Also SteveP might just say no anyway.

Just have an automated response 'less than what you think'

.
I think that there are some folks who genuinely are not sure what their car might be worth and they would prefer to read the opinions of other forum members rather than be told by an untrustworthy dealer who has only his/her own interests at heart.

So, although it often is "less than what you think" it is still very helpful to hear unbiassed owner's opinions.

But who would go there other than people selling their cars?

What about a sticky thread instead of an entire subforum?

Or a link to Pistonheads and Autotrader.

I reckon loads would. Everybody who has recently bought one, and those who think they know the values. Those possibly looking to learn what they can get for their money.  And importantly you could ask 'who won't go their'.

....Does that matter?

I'm not as bad as this delightful couple but I very very rarely go into the Detailing section, let alone just one thread....................

Well if the only people who go there are people who want a valuation on their car, then there isn't anyone going to give the answers. But as Topcat says there are lots of know-it-alls helpful people round here.

It could be usefull, especially of people that have recently sold up post what they got for their cars and the spec of the car

What someone thinks a car is worth and what it actually sells for can often be miles apart

I counter that there are far too many sections. Streamlining or 'trimming the fat' is required.

What about a sticky "Whats my car worth" at the top of the Mk5 General Area

How about telling people to have a Glass's valuation done like everyone else? FFS.

So people considering selling or who are selling would not be allowed to use it?

Here is one to get you started:-

08 Candy DSG 5dr lots of options 49k FVWSH advertised at £12890 (Autotrader, Ebay and this forums sale section) sold for £12500 to 1st viewer  (for sale 7 days, buyer even offered to pay me full price If I delivered it)  :happy2:

Could have got asking price if I played hard ball but knocked him some off as it needed new front tyres and he travelled 5.5hrs to come see it, we were both happy with the price  :happy2:

This would be good in theory but would people really be honest about what they got? Especially if the got their trousers well and truly pulled down by the buyer

I think it's a brilliant idea in theory. I'm not sure if it'll go as planned but if it did I personally think it would be very useful. I'd seriously like to know what mine is worth for starters.

I think it should be done, even if it's just a sticky somewhere... If it didn't work out as planned then it can easily be deleted.
