Hi guys I've got a mk5 gttdi 140 bhp model which has a faulty alternator pulley. How do i know if the broken pulley is a clutched one or free wheel? Just asking as I've seen a free wheel one on gfs for about £35 .Cheers

Mine was a clutch type on a 55 BKD - pretty sure they are interchangeable? I got one for about £30 delivered from GSF which was made by INA (an OEM supplier).
If it's failing it could be worth replacing the belt too, and if DIY'ing you'll benefit from a dedicated pulley removal tool (about £9 on ebay)

Just a little up date...got my pulley and tool on friday afternoon and when the wife came home at 5pm i started to strip the pulley....quick little job shouldnt take more than an hour. How wrong was i , the tool wouldnt fit and when i got something to fit the pulley wasnt moving. So took it to the local garage on saturday morning and shocked it off....go it home and it took about 15 mins to put it all back together again....jobs a goodun

Off topic but i have a squeek comming from that area where the alternator belt is, would it be the belt or the pulley?
-
This wasnt really a squeek it was a horrible loud noise...sounded like an old mercedes van i used to drive...used to do it on idle and if you turned the steering wheel....the noise was more like a loud screech hope this helps

Just bought a belt anyway, hope its easy enough to fit!
