Title: Bigger rear brakes discussion

Ive seen many people here upgrade the rear brakes of there car's to the R32 or S3 rear brakes (The 4WD car's have the larger rear brakes - 310mm rather than 288mm )

Is there a proven benfit to this, I would of thought no, but I am happily proved wrong.

I dont like the idea of the extra weight at the back really, and my thinking is the rears brakes do so little braking effort, you wont really get any benefit?

I guess its to give balance to setup, the R32 / S3 fronts are 340mm iirc.

I would of thought the AWD cars have bigger rear brakes as they are actually driving wheels, and no other reason?

If you have 286mm solid rear discs then you can use DaveB's caddy calipers conversion that have a 41mm piston vs the standard 38mm one.

It's more for balance/stability under braking Dan - it would help the front end out by not shifting as much weight forward during braking so reduce chance of front end lock up etc.

May also increase disc / pad life at front end.
