Hey guys/gals
I got my NQSBBK fitted a couple of weeks (and absolutely love it ) but the brake disc hubs have started to rust (I have now read it is common). So I plan to paint them during the bank holiday later this month, so I wanted to find out what paint is best to get.
I'm thinking of going for silver or black.
What paint would you guys/gals recommend?
Thanks
Kalpesh

Sand back, rust remedy, etch primer, then high temp paint... I've always done silver, but black looks good...
-
Painted mine with Black Hammerite 'Direct to Rust' stuff from Halfords, did the same with my previous 2 cars where the same thing had happened!
-
Did all mine before having them fitted the other day. No pics of the rears but they look like the fronts. I used Zinc 182 Anti rust primer followed by Halfords Black High Temperature Paint. I masked everything off but i was told this is not really needed as the pads will remove any excess paint/spray. 2 coats of each (both sides) and the edges.

D'oh! Should have done that before fitting (you live and learn). I think I will have to do it with them fitted to the car now, so probably best to go for brush on rather than spray I'm guessing.
Martin do you have any pics of them fitted to the car? I was leaning towards silver but may go for black depending on the look.
-
^^^^ no pictures that show the painted areas I'm afraid. Maybe when it stops snowing here!

No worries. Yeah we have had some here in London but not settling.
Anyone else got any pics showing black brake disc hubs?

Here you go! I did mine last year using Halfords high temperature satin black paint. Brushed it on whilst hubs were on the car. Easy enough to do and looks good.

Thanks mate :happy2:
So that's another job for the holiday added to the list.
-
I have to get this done too. The laziest option seems to be - brush off loose rust then a lick of Hammerite 'direct to rust'.
If I make a bags of it it's no big deal as I'll have to replace the discs soon enough anyway.

That's what I am currently planning to do
Am looking to go silver so would this be ok?

Is there any heat tolerance in that paint? I know this isn't going to generate as much heat as the disc/pad surface, but I'd bet it gets pretty hot at times; last thing you want is that dripping on to your wheels... or disc/pad! :surprised: I like the idea of matching the disc colour though.
-
It's not specifically a high temperature paint. However some forum people have used it without issue.
Actually I was thinking of using it on my calipers, but not sure if they get hot or not??
-
Probably a good couple of hundred degrees C for the calipers (don't quote me) - I'd only use high temp. paint on those personally - there's lots of caliper paints in halfords. Thinking about, I'd probably use some caliper paint on the bells too.

Can I ask what colour are your wheels, smoked chrome or anthracite?

Thumbs up for the Hammerite in this Scooby thread:

Did that lad use it on his inlet mani!!? :surprised: FFS, must have some serious heat tolerance
-
Had the calipers and disc hubs on my old Leon FR done with Gloss Black VHT Caliper Paint. Looked great and had no peeling issues etc in the two years I owned it. :happy2:

That's all I did, just sand off the rust and paint straight on. Seemed to work fine.

Sorry for the thread revival to start with.
Just been searching Google to see about painting the discs using high temp paint and zinc primer and came across this thread. Just hoping you can give me some advice as I've already done pretty much the same as you with the same stuff apart from my primer is just halfords zinc primer.
Did you cure the high temp paint in the oven?
Is the primer safe? Not had any issues with it bubbling under the paint?
Been reading all sorts on google about not supposed to be using primer so hope you can help.
-
I did this with hammerite, it hasn't been affected by any high temperatures

Excess paint will then foul your pads no??? :signLOL:
-
I've taped up all the braking surfaces and mating/mounting surfaces. More looking for the answer on the primer situation :signLOL:
-
Same as painting up calipers if you ask me. A heat resistant one and it's all good. Don't know why people go for a rust preventative one when it's not necessary :congrats:
Whoever said it's not necessary covering the discs :fighting: you are releasing the brakes then applying so where do you think the paint will go :signLOL: in the pad face :stupid:
-
Ye I thought that too that's why I spent ages taping up haha.
So with the primer I just thought when I've seen people paint they always seem to use primer so I banged some on. I then went to use the high heat paint and looked at the tin and it says do not use primer. Just hoping to see if it's held up well from the lad I quoted. People say if you bake the primer it will just bubble under the paint :rolleye:
Really hope it doesn't :signLOL:
-
Maybe the paint you bought is just like a primer as that's what I thought it was upon first impressions.
Some paints are one coat like perhaps your one but if you used the correct primer then I wouldn't worry too much and fit them on. :happy2:
-
Holy thread revival.
Just do as I mentioned above. Mine were great for the entire time they were on the car. It's a surface being painted, prime it.
-
Ye I've primed it using zinc primer already, did you bake yours in the oven after the very high temp paint was applied?
-
Yes I did BUT be careful to remember that while baking keep the room well ventilated as the smell given off may cause headaches etc.
:happy2:
-
Just finished baking them now :happy2:
Both windows and back door wide open :signLOL: still give me a little headache but there looking good, be cooling down for a while before I can get them out. Thanks for the help tho mate :drinking:
