Picked this up quite a while ago now, and with crap weather and no chance of cleaning it, i didnt bother taking any pics.
Having planned to spend a fair bit of time on it over Easter weekend I ended up really ill since last Wednesday, and only just about felt up to cleaning it yesterday. Not a typical Easter, cold, ill and freezing conditions for cleaning a car.
Anyway, in the end i spent 3 hours on it, gave it a thorough clean. Which it sorely needed. It does need some proper treatment, and will be booked into DMR at some stage. However, it does clean up ok.
Pics are in fading light, so apologies. Oh, and my freezing hands were numb and i didnt realise the thumb was in camera shot.

Only mod so far is: debadged rear end.
Future mods: Well, not much. Its job is to commute and get 600 miles to a tank when we move house. I can see it will most likely need cleaning lots. RNS-e is a must. The standard Concert stereo is rubbish, even though it has the full Bose setup. Also a wheel refurb will be on the cards at some stage.
Apart from that, its just going to be a motorway chugger. Planning to keep it for between 3-5 years, so estimating it to cover approx 60-100k in that time.

Lovely looking car!
-
Very, very nice car! :congrats:
What engine?
-
Thanks both. I do love the way the A3 looks.
Its the 2.0 TDI 140 with DSG box.
-
Very nice
-
what a car mate
-
At last Luke  :happy2:
Good looking motor, another phantom black
Don't know why I didn't go for DSG myself but I'm getting on quite well with the 6MT.
-
Cheers all.
Pete, yeah the DSG box really suits the TDI. I've got an issue or two with it at the moment, but want to perform a DSG basic setting reset before I pursue it as a warranty issue.
If I start the car and stick it straight in reverse and try to pull off the drive, it feels like its going nowhere until I depress the pedal significantly and then it surges.
DSG issues seem to plague me, all 4x cars I've had with DSG have had some issues. :signLOL:
-
:(
That's a PITA. Funny you say that, mate down the roads parents have had two brand new A3 1.6TDI's replacements because the DSG (or S-Tronic, whatever it is) was faulty on theirs consecutively. They've had three different shades of blue now too
Did you renew the Audi used car warranty on yours?
-
No I haven't, as it wasn't audi approved used and I brought through work. Due to that, I get a comprehensive 12 month warranty for free. At the end of the day, if DSG is an issue, and they won't fix it, they will have to have it back off me. :signLOL:
-
How's it comparing to the 123d ( besides the back problems :signLOL:) assuming mpg is up a fair bit.
-

Back problems all ok now!! :happy2:
It's slower, not as fun. But way more comfortable and much more efficient.
-
Glad to see an RNS-E on your list :happy2: For me it's a solid unit, the only thing it lacks from the 510 is the touch screen ability but the software and twist-stick is good enough.
Cup holders are a nightmare at the mo' as if you buy two Costas of any size, you're fu**ed. As I found out lately, as did my passenger seat.
Audi either promote Red Bull drinking (which the further back cup holder is only big enough for) or it's a serious oversight.
Need to wire my Aux in to the RNS-E too which I expect is somewhere on your list?
-
Nice bud. I do like the A3s.. they are basically Mk5s but I think inside they are just a bit nicer... Up until the Mk7 platform, where it seems that the Golf has gotten the nicer interior, but I digress.
Any plans to map it up (the engines respond very nicely to a basic remap), both the engine and the DSG?
Your MPG will go up as well.. :happy2:
Further to that, any other little mods like lowering it slightly or changing the wheels?

This'll be staying mostly standard, comfy commuter.
Plan to get a toy to keep in the garage at some stage.
-
Nice. Very stealth looking.

What's on the mind Luke, something for track?
-
It will either be another track prepped Mk1, although I rarely get time for track days. Alternatively, something for weekend blasts. Maybe a Boxster S or something else.
-
Discovered at the weekend that the boot is woefully inadequate and even smaller than that in the Polo i had. I cant get my dog crate in the back sideways, and the seats dont fold flat (much the same as a Golf) so if i put the crate in the other way around its on a slope. Stupid design.
Should have got an A4 Avant!!!

Lol, the curse of a 3-door fetish eh? :signLOL:

Indeed!!
It wasnt a problem in the Polo though. Thats what i dont get. The crate fitted in there perfectly, and a flat boot floor when the seats were folded down. Was great.
The Sportback would have the same issue. Boot isnt physically wide enough.
Need to go shopping for crate no.3 now.

Gave the car its 2nd clean since we moved house. It gets covered in dust and mud as soon as its cleaned (the joys of living on a building site).
It was nearly dark when the pics were taken with the iPhone, so they are pretty noisy.

Apart from that, its covered a few k miles commuting, and is impressive on the run. Highest miles for a full tank so far was around 620. It will average around 62mpg on the run to work, 55-58mpg on the way home (usually a bit less traffic and higher speeds).
-
I always like seeing another one Luke, very pleased I went for Phantom Schwarz like yourself, I'm sure? Kept finding Ibis white ones but glad I didn't plunge in.
600 is a good return :happy2: I can squeeze just about that in the warmer months. 520 miles to £75 is more realistic in winter.
I'm hoping to touch 70mpg on my return trip to the ring which I think is realistic.
Apparently there's no autobahn on the North France North Belgium route so I'll have to wait to properly exploit the top end now she's stage 1 :popcornsoda:
-
The route back to Spa from the Ring incorporates an autobahn or two. Took the Scirocco on a couple of years ago, but we had thunderstorms just as we hit it. Typical!!
The Phantom black is a pain, hardest car to keep clean. I'd rather had a white one tbh. Still pondering what to do with the car, it's great but I wish I'd have got an A4 now the M135i is on the way, as a practical commuter for weekends away walking the dogs would have been more suitable.
Oh, the Black edition A3 appears to be the most common Audi where I live now. Lol!! Most the others are Sportback though.

Cool, we won't be going to Spa though so I assume I'll miss all that?
It is - but I can't imagine Ibis is any better if my mates Alpine white 325D is anything to go by.
Could you trade it in for a nice A4 S-Line with good kit, straight swap?
135i sounds exciting, is that set in stone? :happy2:
That's unlucky tbh. Luckily 3 doors is the premium around here and most stuff is rep engine and/or pov spec A6's and A4's, some Sportback A3's too.
-
Yes, M135i will be ready for collection 1st week in September for my Birthday. Can't wait!!
I've looked at trading the A3 in. Will see if a suitable car becomes available at work to make things easier. We have a vRS estate in at the mo, but the wife prefers the look of the A4.

Look forward to seeing it Luke. I still love the idea of a straight six hot hatch :happy2:

Hey mate, just sold my gti and looking at replacing with a a3 black edition.
Did you have a mk5 gti, if so, how's the comparison? I realise it's not got the power but how's the rest of the package.
Also, I notice this is the version without stop start. Any ideas how different the engine is to the later version, it seems the stop start version has greatly improved mpg and lower tax?!
If anyone can answer please do, didn't get much of an answer on audi sport forum :-(
-
Chassis feels just as good as the GTI. Nice and balanced.
Tax is about £130 a year iirc.
I get 62mpg in way to work. 55-58mpg on the way back. Excellent!!
If you want to buy mine, it's in good order.
-
Thanks for that. Much closer to the claimed mpg than bmws get :-)
When you selling? And how much? Ideally looking for 5 door this time round but does look very good in black
-
Nice car
Any mods?
If so looking forward to pics
-
Very clean and can see its been kept crisp condition, nice, you thought about remapping it to 170?
-
I would love an a3 like this, looks so good!
-
Tax is about £130 a year iirc.
Should be no more than £125 dude, that's what mine is being the CR170?
Sold this yet or is it staying alongside the BM?

You sure? Mine is a 170 and is £105. Last year was £100

Million percent chap :happy2:

Yours must be slightly newer than mine (March 2010) and therefore lower emissions.
-
Ah of course. I forgot they changed tax prices with stop start cars. Cracking cars, in love with mine.
