Title: If the MK6 GTI was just in your grasp, would you buy it?
Post by: GTI-Ross on April 19, 2013, 08:28:26 pm
Hey guys,

Thinking of upgrading a bit, got an 05 plate MK5 GTI at the moment. If you had around £14k, would you buy an ealry (09 plate) MK6 GTI or buy a very late MK5 or MK5 eddy?

Not sure how great the improvement have been. Engine still the 2.0l TSI right? I do like the new interior a lot better....

What would you guys do?

I was very near a mk6 gti when deciding what to buy after my old mkiv was written off. I must admit, I do prefer the overall interior of the mk6 over the mk5, but I guess that for you - going from a mk5 gti to an ED30 may not feel 'different' enough to warrant the change?

I was very happy with the mk5 - just felt the ED30 would feel 'special' for longer than a mk6 might. However, as I type that, I realise I think I have seen more ED30's than I have mk6 gti's...

the TSI was only in the mk6, the mk5 has the TFSI doesn't it....

I'd go mk6, when you come to sell it will be worth more, i would have thought less miles.

Tricky one Ross.

With a budget of £14k, If your leaving your next car standard, a Mk6 GTI but if your planning on modding it then I'd say an Eddy as you'll have ££££ over for just that. I prefer the interior of the Mk6 and (aesthetically) some of the exterior features too.

Decisions, decisions!!  :happy2:

Personally, the MK6.

It's later, cabin might feel more solid than the MK5 in small areas and extra 7-10hp or so. With the rear .:R lights too, they look great with the segregated dual pipes at the back. Getting to like the anal bead look DRL's with the Xenons too  Be a committed retrofit that I'd want to attack.

Personal preference can only dictate though...

I could have had one (just) for the price of my Rocco. I really like them, it's basically a MK5 (that we all love  :star:) with a lot of the issues resolved (dash rattles, cam follower, cam belt change every 4 years  :sad1:).

The TSI engine is much stronger and responsive to tuning (ignoring the couple of cam chain failures). May be the last GTI within most people's budget for a while  :surprised:

Improved MPG and with the extra colour coding over the mk5 too boost the apeal even further  :happy2:

ED35 to me doesn't seem worth the extra, older engine and a couple of badges, doesnt have the exclusivity over the standard model like the ED30 does over the mk5  :sad1:

Tough one that, I had a budget of £18k when I was looking and opted for a MK5 Edition 30 earlier this year.

I have always opted for the tidest older model I could buy opposed to a newer model in average condition for similar money.

14k wouldn't buy a mk6 gti up here in Glasgow. You'd be lucky to get a tidy gt 140 tdi mk6 for that price!

personally, i would not buy a mk6 gti.

i would either get a mint pirelli or save up more and get an R

the gti is not a jump enough from the mk5, whereas the Pirelli is a genuine special edition and the R is a masive jump up in terms of performance  potential as we have seen from some of the R's gracing the forum now.

Get the 3800 mile Edition 30 available , i'm sure £14k would buy it.

£14k is a bit cheap for a MK6 GTI the spec cannot be that high on the one you have seen ???

Edition 30 has something about it that the MK6 and even the R hasn't

On a final note , i have a Ed30 with 20k on it , i have another £10k burning a hole in my pocket but think i will be keeping the ED30 for good . Why don't you buy a ED30 and see if you think there is something special about it . If you still think MK6 then the ED30 is fairly easy to sell  :happy2:

Im just not sure whether it would feel like a new car as much. The Ed30 are lovely, and have the big old K04 would be sweet, but the stronger TSI and much more refined interior is pushing me to the MK6.

Golf R is out of my range (TAX & Insurance i think) Does anyone know what the tuning potential on the TSI is like. i would only be going stage 1 / 2

At 14K I'd buy a well specked low Milage eddy in the right colour combo. The addition of the stronger engine and KO4 turbo would be my deciding factory. Eddies are a lot more rare too. Saying that the MK6 GTI is a very nice hatch too. IMO a well kept, high spec GTI is prob one of the best hatches out there

The ED30 lump isn't exactly weak is it ! If you are tuning a car too then i think your decision is made already , it has to be the ED30 and people on here are forever selling stage 1 and 2 stuff . If you buy the tuning stuff second hand you will get the money back when you take off and sell the ED30 (if you ever do that is ) As i have said i have at least £10k burning a hole but cannot find any car i want at £20k or under more than my ED30 . Now £30k is a bit different but then i don't do many miles either ...
