Title: RCD 510 Fitment in 05 Gti
Post by: rskardon on July 31, 2009, 08:17:45 pm
Hi there, my 05 gti has the 10 speaker older set up, does anyone know if the RCD510 will still plug and Play?

Thanks,

R

I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that you need a new canbus connector but could be mistaken.

Are they easy to get hold of and cheap?

Thanks,

R

I think Bacillus is right, you may need the CAN BUS 1.6 to 2.0 adapter on very early Mk5's, I haven't seen many places that sell these and from memory they are that cheap.

Do you know what model year your car is ?

Its a 2005 (05) is that what you meant?

It has an AXX engine and the standard stereo has the Grey butons on the outside rather than silver ones of the newer models, would VW sell a Can Bus adapter?

Thanks,

R

i have an 05 gti with the 10 speakers and can confirm the rcd 510 is plug and play.  It will work with all gti's.  There were some issues with the very first mk5 golfs though which came a year before

I'm sorry i don't have steering wheel controls but would imagine it would be the same as all gti's

Thanks winrya, just out of curiosity have you had your 510 a while? i read here that the only issue is that there is a 1.4 volt drain if there is a can bus issue http://www.my-gti.com/1101/upgrading-2nd-generation-radios-rcd-300-rcd-500-to-3rd-generation-rcd-210-rcd-310-rns-310-rcd-510-power-drain-issue , as my car sits around a little that could be a problem for me,

Cheers,

R

Mine has been in since christmas and i run an amp and sub through it and no problems yet so presume it's not a problem.  It is often left on the drive for 5 days at a time as i ride my bike to work.

Well I have now purchased my 510 and will go pick it up tonight, got it down to £390 (from £450) on Fleebay, It apprently brand new (still has the screen protector), out of a car being fitted with Satnav by PDI, the guy has 4 more if anyone else is looking for one too?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volkswagen-VW-RCD-510-Radio-6CD-MP3-RCD510-300m-500W-CD_W0QQitemZ180388278778QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Audio_TV_Electronics_In_Car_Entertainment_GPS_In_Car_Audio_Players_PP?hash=item29fffab1fa&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Took the old one out and cant wait to fit the new one!

Any reason you didnt spend the extra £150 ish and go for sat nav as well with an RNS model?
Title: Re: RCD 510 Fitment in 05 Gti
Post by: rskardon on August 03, 2009, 04:10:23 pm
I havent seen one of the RNS go for less than £600 recently (which is 50% more), and most of them at that price seem to be reconditioned from lithuania which i dont fancy and i dont really need the sat nav as i fairly recently got a High-end Tom Tom Live, which i think is a better sat nav unit.

The slightly annoying thing is, having removed my air vents and the Airbad on/off plug I now have an airbag fault, hopefully my dealer will reset this for nothing as i spent a fortune there recently, annoying though, should have thought about it!  :sad1:

The airbag light can be extinguished via VAGCOM.

Is it expensive to get hold of a VAG COM? I looked on the vagcom part of the site and i dont think there is anyone with one that is close to me in Surrey (near Kingston).

Well I picked up the RCD last night, all fitted and looking sweet  :jumpmove:

I really think it lifts the cabin and makes the whole car feel a nicer place to be, the main reason i got it is because i test drove the mark 6 and it really stood out, also my other one was on the blink, i'm sure there's been a thousand potos of these but here are a couple anyway...

Well annoyingly (and slighlty comically) I ended up winning another one on eBay too  :rolleye: so when it arrives i will be posting it in the for-sale section for £375, its also brand new from a passat cc being upgraded so should be just as sweet, watch the for sale section soon. R

Now that this unit has been in the car for a while, did you get the battery drain problem? Did you replace the can gateway?

I have just managed to get an RCD510 really cheap and don't know whether I will need a new can gateway or not as my car is an 05 plate too.

Cheers

Hi there,

No problems with Battery drain for me so far, so i guess its all ok, I think the can-bus thing is for non Gti's, or maybe just a way to scam more money out of people,

Cheers,

Battery drain is definitely an issue on some GTIs.  I installed the RCD510 into an 07 GTi with no problems however when I installed the same RCD unit into an 05 GTI  my battery would run flat,  if the car was not used ,  after about 3 days  . I had a new can bus installed a few weeks ago & its seems to have done the trick. But I  will only know for sure  when the car is parked  up for a few days.....

My friend is currently selling one, as he had the battery drain issue in his passat.
It was new when he got it, only had it in a couple of weeks.

Bit pricey though. I paid £300 delivered for one out of a brand new car.

Its odd that the canbus thing affects some and not others, mine isnt driven for 5 days a week every week and never had a problem, one of the many quirks of the vw production i guess

Thanks

I put an RCD510 in my '06 GTI back in June, having only bought the car in May. Everything was fine for the first week, having driven the car every day. Then, after having not driven the car on the saturday, I went out to start it on the sunday and the battery was completely dead.

I've since bought an AD version Canbus, but have not been able to find anyone to fit it and code it for me. I still use the RCD510 every day in the car, but take the radio fuse (F19) out every night to stop it draining the battery.  :happy2:
