Title: MKV Hella Xenon-Look and HID Kit Install (Picture heavy)
Post by: mtj2k on April 24, 2013, 01:19:12 pm
Hello all,

I finally bit the bullet and bought a set of Hella "Xenon-Look" headlights and a 6000K HID kit. If anybody's interested i took some pics of the install and some info on what exactly I bought:

Headlights: Purchased from German Carparts GmbH
Part Numbers: 1LL 009 476-031 & 1LL 009 476-041 (RH Drive)
Cost: €342 delivered (Mar13)

HID Kit: Purchased from HID's Direct
Part Numbers: HD822/6k (35W)
Cost: £49 delivered (Mar13)

So, this was my car with the original, silver backed headlights.

I'm not going to explain how to remove the front bumper, too many threads on that and very easy to do - easier with 2 people.

Bumper off, standard lights out:

New Lights:

New lights in with standard bulbs:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmtj2k%2Flights%2FDSCF2715.jpg&hash=5b17c10fa9251b91194e7b5b0f54aad9a52e6c8c)

Installing the HID kit:

The bulb holders are at a 45degree angle so the HID earthing strip doesnt require the dreaded "6 o'clock" mod:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmtj2k%2Flights%2FDSCF2725.jpg&hash=62cc7215675d93bfc908611a22d9888cc1312381)

As if they were designed for HID's no wire splicing required! Don't do what i did, red goes into yellow! BTW you will need to remove the bulb retaining clip to fit the HID kit as the clip goes round the wires.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmtj2k%2Flights%2FDSCF2724.jpg&hash=52b2a4225719bffe6c11f1a0f21f32385541224a)

I chose to stealth mount the ballast on the bottom of the units, where the OEMs should go, the holes lined up perfect, well for two of the three!

Headlights installed, bumper re-fitted, white LED sidelights, job's a fish...

Overall: Very happy, beam output and pattern is immense - sorry i don't have any pics of this yet. But passed MOT last week with them installed. Any questions re supplier or help required PM me. Don't forget to get on VCDS and change to "Xenon's without shutter" to prevent any chance of flickering etc..

Thanks for looking  :happy2:

Look brilliant :happy2:

I fitted my Depo Xenon Look lights last weekend (along with a 5k HID kit), love them. Like those sidelight bulbs you have, which ones are they?

Also I haven't done any coding in VCDS. What module will it be under?

Thanks, couldn't go back to halogens after driving with these installed. Couldn't tell you what LED's i have, had them for ages, just some cheap eBay jobby. I think it was under Central Electrics:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fl564%2Fkaos420007%2FUntitled.png&hash=3651aa55a8c5db0d9fd82359311f8a5748d239c0)
If you got an oldish VCDS you may not have the option but you can still change it manually see this http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3986819-HELP-Xenon-without-shutters-option-not-available-in-VagCom/ (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3986819-HELP-Xenon-without-shutters-option-not-available-in-VagCom/)

Hi mate
Out of interest why did you go into Xenon coding and enable Xenons? What difference does that make? I've been running xenons  (Hella Celis) for nearly a two years, without this box checked. Just wondered if it changed the behavior at all.

It was more preventative rather than a fix for anything. Research had said some people experienced HID flickering if you didn't enable this. I have VCDS so it was a 5 min job, if i didn't i probably wouldn't have bothered. Like you i had the celis sets on for about a year without this option enabled no problem

Nice work. I see you have the newer slimmer ballasts as well. They sent me one of these as a warranty replacement but sent it back. I find that even though they are slimmer, all the boxes on the cables are a complete mess. They sent me an used but working ballast that I could fit where I had previously as the install is a lot neater. Here is a pic showing mine for reference  :happy2:

Hi all,

thanks for all the replies! sorry haven't been looking at this for a while. Just to answer a few Q's - Yes you can sill adjust the dip with the roller inside the cabin - i had mine calibrated on highest setting so that i can manually dip them if the car is heavy loaded. I guess you could retrofit the auto level sensors but i cant find a how-to on this.

The units I installed are HELLA ones - but as far as i can tell the only difference between these and the cheaper DEPO ones are that the bulb holders are at different angles and you may be required to do the "6 o'clock mod" on those if fitting HID's

Anyway - so far so good no problems at all!

http://bit.ly/145DPrT (http://bit.ly/145DPrT)

HID bulbs have an earthing strip down one side: if this strip is at the top (12oclock), then the reflection causes a shadow in front of the car, the mod is to do some mild cutting/bodging to be able to fit the bulb with the strip at the bottom(6oclock)

are they the same projector style? cos i looked into them, not for the xenon bulbs, but to change the look of the front end. I thought it was illegal to have xenons without the wipers and auto levelling?

No those are the DEPO ones! They still 'look' the same if that's what you're after! They're not designed for xenon bulbs but H7 HID kits look just lovely!

For those people asking where to get them from.... just google "German Carparts GmbH"  :happy2:

And just to clarify....

You DON'T need washers or wipers to have HID's and pass an MOT.

IF YOU HAVE washers and wipers and HID's then they must all be fully functional to pass an MOT

im glad you said this before i went out and spent £100 on replacing all my bulbs for slightly "xenon look" ones. I think ill just save and hid the whole thing instead.

does your kit convert just the dipped beam, or the main one too?
Title: Re: MKV Hella Xenon-Look and HID Kit Install (Picture heavy)
Post by: mtj2k on February 21, 2014, 04:37:49 pm
Only the dipped beams - the high beams are the standard reflector type housings and i would never be one of those idiots that put HID's in reflector housing and blind everyone! <---- This will make you fail an MOT  :innocent:

tbh i haven't used my full beams since i have had these installed as they are like daylight torches!

Great write up thanks.

Would it be possible to take a photograph of the beam pattern please? Like against a wall or garage door.

Has anybody been able to locate the same Hella set that the OP has installed? I have been searching google for the part numbers in the first post but not getting very far!

Also has anybody encountered any condensation within the headlamp?

Just spotted a set of each on here:

http://www.expertmotors.bg/en/20741-2-pcb.html?sort=3&page=66

I take it Right Hand Traffic = Left Hand Drive and Left Hand Traffic = Right Hand Drive...which agree with the OPs part numbers.

I have also emailed Hella UK to see if they stock them.

Thanks

Ill try and get a snap of the light output tonight! which is awesome btw...

I got mine from Germany - Company listed in the original post.

I sometimes get a little bit of condensation in one of the lights - normally after a wash or heavy rain. A couple of minutes of lights on gets rid of it or one of those silicon pouches in the back of the unit

Hi all,

I'm new on here. Checked out this thread when I was looking to upgrade my jetta lamps to HID. Saw the quality of the Hellas and bit the bullet!

I'm chuffed with the result! They were simple enough to fit, couple of hours start to finish really...

Here's a couple of pics anyway (if they work!)

I'm using 4300k HID's which is close to OEM colour, I didn't want the blue look.

Beam pattern is great, I've had cars in the past with factory fitted xenons, and I can honestly say these are as good! Highly recommended

Looking good Monty!

Can you let me know where you got hold of the Hella's from please? (I can't seem to find them in RHD anywhere!!)

Thanks

Was a pain to find in RHD. I originally ordered from a UK company, the following day they rang me explaining 1 side had been discontinued?! ...but only 1 side!

Obviously I cancelled the order and went along with an ebay shop in Germany (like the thread starter did) 3 days later and they were here! Amazing service!

Hi all,

I'm new on here. Checked out this thread when I was looking to upgrade my jetta lamps to HID. Saw the quality of the Hellas and bit the bullet!

I'm chuffed with the result! They were simple enough to fit, couple of hours start to finish really...

Even have the location and crews for the oem ballast

That's why I opted for them, great quality, perfect space for the ballast! They were literally plug and play!

I'd like to see the comparison between hella and DEPO.

So we're looking at around £350 delivered, not too bad but the Depos are £200!

Not sure I can justify it just to get around the 6 o'clock mod

I'm going for these headlights very soon, now the nights are drawing in and will freshen the car up a treat. I do want to put the hid kit into them but when I have had hid's in the past they have always interfered with the radio reception when they were switched on? Has anyone else had this and if not, which kit did you use so I don't have the radio interference?

Is it worth paying that much extra for the hella vs depo ones? A lot of people say that output is terrible when you put back in non hid bulbs for say the MOT, you'd probably fail the MOT if you the output is that bad with only standard bulbs in them?

Guys....just get depo ones.. Light output is great with HIDs..you don't need to remove them for MOT. Had mine for a few months..best mod I've done...just passed mot too...don't overthink this...they're decent for the price

why buy replicas when you can get oem xenons :) got oem bi-xenon headlights for 60£ and now i'm buying the missing parts for around 200£ and they are 100% working :) :driver:
and that make them cost me a total of 260£ and cheaper then the replicas

Just one thing to watch out for

The drivers side headlight and the wiper motor have the same grounding point on my car, im guessing the spike in voltage when powering up/down the hids blew it
I had to run a new grounding cable for the motor to stop it happening again

Has anyone else blown their front wiper motor yet. :scared:

Glad I found this as I've been watching the depo one on ebay for a while now. I even made another thread asking if they were any good and several people confirmed they were and there was no mention of this 6 o clock mod.

So can someone confirm if the depo's do or don't require this mod?

Does anyone know if the Depo Xenon look headlights will work with the coming home/leaving function?

Also are they able to be programmed through Vag-Com to enable US indicators as DRL's? From the photos I've seen the sidelights are next to the indicator, rather than in the main beam?

Very tempted by the Depo's as the Hella's are discontinued and proving impossible to find new!

I have the Depo's and coming/leaving home lights still work (with HID kit).

US Sidelights should work too - it's just coding related, as is the above mate.

Hope that helps.

I bought from here - cheapest I could find:

Perfect! Thanks for the info and link.

Are you happy with the quality of yours?

Also, the sidelights are definitely in the bottom of the headlight, next to the indicator, as per OEM Xenon's?

Hella have a list of dealerships around the uk on their site. I think you can get them from tps or andrew page places or even off ebay pal.

Part Numbers i bought for RHS versions are 1LL 009 476-031 and -041 so that might help if you have a butchers on ebay maybe, or if a local dealer is better for you mate.

Probably another stupid question but am I right in thinking the HID kit has some sort of rubber grommet so you just drill a hole in the back of the headlamp cover and feed it through there??
