Title: Bangernomics
Post by: NeilM on May 19, 2013, 03:20:42 pm
I need a big old cheep barge for about 6 months while I do my new house up (has to be Auto), I'm down to these:

2002 VW Passat Estate  1.9TDI  116k  £2199

2003 A4 Avant 2.5 TDI  120k  £2995

2003 VW Passat Estate 1.9 Sport TDI  99k  £2990

2004 A6 Avant 2.5 TDI  148k  £2750

All around the J tax band/cheep insurance, amazing what you can get if you venture into M (£475)

Any thoughts on Bangernomics??

Neil

A6?

You can get more in the back when you are doing runs back and forth to the tip and B&Q!

Bigger cars are strangely cheaper, look at A6s/5xxd/etc.

Ivve been looking at cars about 4k higher than that though.  Still, go for the big exec saloons if you want value for money.  Merc's seem to be better second hand value for money than the other big exec manufacturers.  I certainly wouldnt be looking at Passats etc when you can get much more car for the money with the Merc's IMO

Merc S Class S320 TDI £134k. http://www2.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201303255936251/sort/default/usedcars/fuel-type/diesel/price-to/3000/model/s_class/make/mercedes-benz/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/radius/1500/postcode/iv363uj/page/1?logcode=p (http://www2.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201303255936251/sort/default/usedcars/fuel-type/diesel/price-to/3000/model/s_class/make/mercedes-benz/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/radius/1500/postcode/iv363uj/page/1?logcode=p)

I was looking at these for ages as over 600 miles to tank can be had from from the passat 1.9 tdi but I thought sod it and bought the v6 4 motion instead  :signLOL:  it's bloody huge in side

Surely a cheap van would be more useful while renovating a house? A T4 could be had for less than £1k, or if you fancy something low mileage and in better condition spend up to £3k and get that back easily when you need to sell it as someone will want it for converting to a camper/day van.

Needs to be an auto for Neil so t4 would be a no I would think plus he needs to be able to get his wheel chair in so would also think the van would be hard getting in and out of

Yes, thats true. I had forgotten. There are auto T4s available.

However, you could have a ramp on the rear, remove the passenger seat and a small ramp up to the cockpit area. Its not impossible.

I've seen a T4 for sale adapted for a wheelchair user, has a hydraulic ramp at the back and a swivel drivers seat, problem is the room in the back you need to keep clear so you can roll in and get to the drivers seat.

A6 is like a small van with the seats down and I'll put the wheelchair on the passenger seat   :happy2:

I wouldn't rule out the 1.9TDI A6 Avant. Available with auto and the same load lugging capabilities as the 2.5.

Where abouts in the country are you Neil? I'm selling a 51-plate Passat for a fair bit less than £2k.

We've had a 53-plate 1.9 130 Passat estate for six years.  It's roomy, comfortable and swiftly wafty.    I'm pleasantly surprised that it's kept its value so well!
