Title: Which air intake?
Post by: mk4gti-t on May 22, 2013, 12:29:49 pm
Im looking at fitting an air intake/induction kit to my 2005 Gti. It's a standard car at the moment and the most im going to modify it performance wise is cat back exhaust, intake and remap. The induction kit wont be making much in the way of bhp, i just love the chatter when you lift off  :happy2:

CAI's from £200-£450 so depends on your budget really.

ITG, APR/VWR, FORGE Twintake and REVO are the more expensive ones and EVOMS, Nuespeed, AMD, Volant are less so. Have a look at the ITG and EVOMS, covers both ends (cost wise) and probably not a load of difference in their performance, both are good. ITG for whoosh dish and EVOMS for a bit of cha cha cha.

EDIT: Evoms CAI on eBay ATM, may go cheap. Don't know if its for your car or a K04 though, you'd have to ask as you can't tell from the picture.

Thanks, that help alot. My budget is going to be about £150 and saw this on ebay -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PIPERCROSS-INDUCTION-KIT-VW-Golf-Mk5-2-0-FSi-Turbo-GTi-/290647489844?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43abf0bd34 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PIPERCROSS-INDUCTION-KIT-VW-Golf-Mk5-2-0-FSi-Turbo-GTi-/290647489844?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43abf0bd34)

Any good or just cheap rubbish?

That just attaches to your OEM engine cover IIRC so not really worth it IMHO. Save up a wee bit more and get a EVOMS or a second hand ITG of Forge Twintake, they're always popping up in the for sale section.

I have a ITG on at the moment but that's a £350 option. Before that I had a carbonio carbon intake which with the mods your planning will give you everything you need and they sound good. You can here them sucking the air in. Plus they look good when you pop your bonnet. If you watch on eBay you can pick a second hand one up for about £100-£120 there are some carbon speed ones on eBay at £185 new but not used one of these.

Unless you want big power don't bother with expensive intakes.

Fitted a twintake to mine (ed30)after much research, don't think I really like it since fitting it is very whooshey which is great but what I don't like is half throttle on boost it sounds like its struggling and can here the divertor fluttering terribly.might sell it

The ITG is honestly absolutely brilliant, it sounds good and just breathes really well know matter what rev range your at. I can highly recommend it. If you decide to sell your forge I'd go ITG but again that's just me.

Amen to that, yeah I would like to try a itg or go out with someone who has one. I would love to do a swap with someone too for the itg although I live the twintake looks.

^^^^ got rid of my ITG ages ago due to the noise. Some peeps love em' and some, less so. Its not called Darth Vadar for no reason and living with (what sounds like) an asthmatic in the cabin soon losses its appeal. Out of the 3 I've had, EVOMS is the best IMO although I got rid of that one too, REVO or APR/VWR next for me.

Hmmmm yeah I know what you mean the twintake is worse than darth on boost, maybe ill try revo or apr. who knows I thought I would limit and yeah I did initially but for a daily is not so great especially when you get the looks of a chav from the locals as its worse when stage 1 and dsg as when you come of boost trying to be a creeping Jesus goes out the window. Maybe ill just flick the stock air box on and just do everything else to get to stage 2 plus.

I'm looking into an intake, is their a quiet one? not keen on something loud.

IIRC there's a fair few peeps running stage 2 (and LOADS running Stage 1) with the OEM engine cover in place and either an OEM panel filter or an aftermarket one, such as the ITG one or Pipercross one with no problems at all.

MC 71, just wondering did you get rid of the ITG because you didn't like the noise style or because it was to loud ?
It's just when you said you preferred the evoms its just when I heard an evoms I thought it was louder than the ITG !

:happy2:

Title: Re: Which air intake?

Yeah recently upgraded to Pipercross panel. Only going to Stage 1.5 I think, pre cat and map. So might just keep stock set-up.

For me the reason for getting rid of the ITG Maxogen was loudness (and that alone) and not the noise style. Out of the 2 I honestly preferred the sound of the ITG but (personally) I thought the EVOMS was a wee bit less invasive in the cabin, noise wise. No direct comparison as I didn't run one straight after the other. I'm just a bit fussy so will probably get the APR/VWR CAI with its cannister and see what that's like re loudness and cabin noise.

Title: Re: Which air intake?
Post by: Saintsteve on May 23, 2013, 06:02:40 pm
I've heard an Evoms on a Revo stage 2 ed30 , and my Forge Twintake on my stage 2 Ed30, and noise in the cabin is roughly the same.

There is no such thing as a quiet induction Kit

If you want quiet, then stick a panel filter in your oem housing or a Carbonio which won't give you any notable bhp but might increase your throttle/torque response ever so slightly.

My Volant closed IK has the best of both worlds, quite subtle whilst driving normally, but includes all the usual induction noises when you get on it; I'm very happy with it.... only prob. is that it costs a bit getting it from the US.

What I liked about it was the OEM look to it:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vividracing.com%2Fcatalog%2Fimages%2Fvolant-cai-volkswagen-gti-0608-1.jpg&hash=28ef64dd3776922a201635f19fb1f7d048025376)
It takes the air feed from the usual place and from behind the headlight similar to the twintake in that fashion.

Although I see where you are coming from, the Neuspeed is far from a poor bit of kit and well up to the job, especially for what I suppose you could class as light tuning (stage 1/2/3 on a K03 GTI.)

I had one on my K03 GTI and it was great  :happy2:

I used an ITG on my stage 3 K04 S3 as I thought the bigger bore prior to the MAF was warranted on that.

Pretty sure that picture is of my old ED30 fitted with the Volant "Powercore" Intake, I bought it from a parts dealer in USA (WCP Diesel) and had it shipped to a mate in (Texas) USA (Shipped free from dealer to my mate)  who forwarded it to me (Cost around £40 in shipping from memory), I bought it because no one else had one and I liked the look of it, I did not like the look of the ITG (Blue Peter toilet roll and grannies clunge sponge) and the Twintake was a bit bling for me!, I think Scotty may have bought it from me in January?.

I did a sort of review, link below, with shipping and VAT (if your unlucky enough to pay it), I doubt you will pay more than £210 for one, think it cost me £198 shipped (plus K04 Take off pipe £23), fitting around 30 mins.

It is yours mate, my engine bay is dirty in comparison (http://www.voodish.co.uk/misc/New-GTI-Grill.jpg), so stole your pic :happy2:

It works out a lot more expensive when you have to pay taxes, think mine came to ~£250... which was more than I wanted to pay tbh... but at least it's different and as said, I like the OEM look.

It's much quieter than an open air, infact when driven normally you'd barely notice it:

Volant Powercore

Compared to a Neuspeed P-Flo:

Neither video is mine.
IF you want the noise all the time, then go for an open cone, otherwise a closed system will suit you better.

The bottom video is my car, it is a loud intake and can at time draw attention your way.
It chatters and dumps very loud. I personally like it and think that it is a great bit of kit for the price. Easy to fit (except the clip that holds the intake pipe above the turbo, very tight to get at).
if you go to my youtube page from that video there are a few videos of the sound inside the car.

The company is called "WCP Diesel" in USA, you can find them on google easily, price comes up as $270 but you can make an offer, start low and keep increasing by $5 eventually you will get the lowest price they will accept, pretty sure it converted to around £148 or £158 (It was 15 months ago I forget).

Enjoy.

If you have a relative/mate in USA they offer free shipping included in price and get your mate to send on, otherwise arrange with company.

Might be a good option to arrange your own courier if you have access and WCP will allow it.

I must have paid £158 then with slightly different exchange rate.

You could ask if you could organise your own courier (UPS are usually cheapest using their "Express Saver" service) that way you fill in the forms yourself to ensure correct delivery.

I've ordered one from amazon.com two days ago and dhl have just rung me to say they have just tried to deliver! It cost £265 including delivery and import tax however the tax was a bit odd and was only an estimate so they said I may be due a part refund if the actual cost is less. I know its a bit more than others have paid however I thought it was safer using amazon than trying to arrange delivery myself. Will collect tonight if I get chance.

Right fitted mine today and I have to say I am a bit disappointed. I love the look, engine bay looks much better with the engine cover removed and the product is good quality however I am not overly keen on the noise it makes.

I was hoping it was going to be quiet from what I've read however you can hear it sucking air from the glove box area and when you release the throttle it makes a kind of whoosh disssh similar to a dump valve sound but not as loud.

They all do this, its not really something that can be avoided with induction kits.  if its any conciliation, Id be shocked if it ws as loud as an ITG or Evoms.

It's not as loud as ITG or twintake, I heard them both on GTI's and Edition 30's before I opted for Volant.

If you have an aftermarket exhaust you wont hear it, if its std exhaust you will notice it for while until you get used to it
