Title: all I did was change spark plugs
Post by: edd666999 on June 03, 2013, 03:38:14 pm
So alex sent me some new spark plugs.
Thought I'd change them, as I have done before.

Battery off
Airbox off
Coilpacks out
Spark plugs out

Then reverse.

Now if I go anywhere near 5000rpm whether that be a wot or very slowly the revs just drop and I get no go until I take my foot off the accelerator.

I have swapped spark plugs back and same issue.

No fault code.

Have I damaged something?  Maybe coil pack? Every time its been a coil pack before I have had eml and a code and its been down to how much power I apply not revs.

Id just re check everything. Make sure the maf is plugged in. The Coil packs are firmly pressed onto the plug. The loom is clipped onto each coil pack correctly. The plugs are correctly torqued up to 21lbs. Much more than that there isn't a lot that can go wrong.

Have the plugs come pre-gapped or do they need altering to suit?

I'm assuming you bought some D4YS, if so, what do you have them gapped to?
Title: Re: all I did was change spark plugs
Post by: edd666999 on June 03, 2013, 05:21:38 pm
Alex gapped and lubed them.

But I have gone back to standard plugs with same issue.

I don't have a torque wrench so just made them tight. Woukd this issue be caused by them not being tight enough?

Should just be hand tight with proberly a 1/4 turn afterwards.

Have you logged them car then to see what its failing on?

Have you dropped anything into the turbo intake tube or into the air box?

I had a similar problem years ago on a 1.8T motor - found out we blocked the cold air feed so it wasn't picking up enough air for it to rev!

Im using the standard air intake, which I have only been using a few days. Cant see it being blocked but ill look.

try disconnecting the battery again for 5 minutes, reconnect back up. (positive)

Ed I seem to recall you have an APR map so double check that you haven't switched into valet mode (assuming that mode is in your map).

I was thinking that but have you seen the procedure to change to valet mode? It's easier to send a man to the moon!

I'll do battery and check the map mode this morning, I have a new maf and some coil packs waiting my collection at tps too.

if you disconnect your battery will you loose the settings for the map and revert back to basic settings like revo does

You don't, apr stays the same. I asked that direct question when having it fitted. Plus you use the cruise control stalk to change maps and every time I disconnected the battery it stayed on the 3flashes map....thank god.

I must admit I don't know the technical procedure but if the ecu isn't locked out then the map can actually change whilst driving as seen in many cases in the US.

Hope you get it sorted asap whatever the reason.

Who on earth told or taught you too disconnect the battery when changing spark plugs? Sounds like something my apprentice would do.

Oh so disconnecting the battery caused this issue?

That's funny because it didn't cause it the other 3times I swapped plugs. ..or the time I replaced the battery for a new one

Take your sarcastic comments elsewhere. We cant all be wonderful vw techs because we all know how great they are.

Have you checked nothing went down your turbo pipe?  Bit of a pita to get the clamp off. A torch and some long thin tongs might be handy.
VCDS scan whilst running to 5k should show if you have a timing, misfire, fuel pump, etc. matter.
My old stage 2 map would feel like it was pulling back around 5k, changed maps and it was all good.

Hope you get to the bottom of it at Awesome. :happy2:

No sarcasm I simply asked who told you that? No where in my wording was anything saying disconnecting the battery caused this! There's just no need to do it too change over plugs. Take the pill of chill ness mate!

The problem just disappeared. Cant get it to do it anymore.

Awesome looked at the car and cleaned the pcv valve as they thought that might be causing my uneven idle.

Has anyone seen the latest version of the pcv valve? £100 and replaces the bit at the front and the rear bit going to the turbo?

if you disconnect your battery will you loose the settings for the map and revert back to basic settings like revo does

i bought my car with revo stage 2 and had battery disconected,so does that mean my car isnt running the stage 2 map anymore then??

If its been disconnected for a couple of hours or more then it will have reverted to stock settings.

However the map is still there you just need someone with a Revo SPS switch to put the settings back on.

I'll be back last week June (after 24th) so give me a shout then and I'll put the settings back.

Not sure if my switch will work as its for a 2.0TSi but it should do. If not ill try it plugged in to the laptop and go through the Revo SPS software. Do you know what the settings where before? Boost 7, Timing 6, Fuel 8 for example. If not we may need to do a bit of data logging to get safe settings.
