Title: Can someone explain what this is for ?
Post by: Jakesangel on June 12, 2013, 12:03:01 pm
We've had our mk5 Gti now for nearly two months, it came fitted with a central armrest amongst other goodies. Anyway when I lift the lid of the armrest, inside there appears to be some sort of docking station port and I have no idea what its for.

We dont have the actual ipod docking station, 6 cd changer in the car or anything like that, but I did connect my ipod lead to this particular port and all it did was seem to charge the i-pod. Is that correct or am I missing something ? surely its meant to do more than charge the i-pod, or maybe not

Thanks in advance for any light you guys may be able to shed on the matter.

It is for playing your ipod, you should get the basic controls come up on your radio. It is not the best set up in the world as you can normally only choose from six albums this way. I used to create a play list before i set off and used it that way. Also depending on what ipod you have in their the lid might not close, i had a first and second gen i-pod touch which was fine any after that and they wouldn't charge and the lid wouldn't close.

Thanks for the reply TOP CAT its most appreciated. The car stereo was turned on when I attached the i-pod but nothing came up on the display. I think my unit is the MFD2 Version C which also has sat nav if that helps !!

Do I physically need to do something to the stereo to make it play or show on the display ?  :ashamed:

Thanks

Think you should just press media twice. Think one press will go to cd then 2nd press should go to iPod.

Assuming its all OEM it sounds like you have the MDI, beacuse as you say its not the iPod dock.
(Mk6)MDI looks like this. ↓

(Mk5) iPod dock looks like this. ↓

If this is the case the MDI would have been retrofitted as it was never an option on the Mk5's. Maybe the previous owner ran a RNS/RCD 510 in conjunction with the MDI, and then removed the RNS/RCD prior to sale?

The MDI is not compatible and will not work with the MFD2.

Thanks MK5DOM, i think !!!!

Although if i'm honest I havent got a clue what you just said  :signLOL:

I'm useless when it comes to technology and jargon, sorry mate.

However, mine does look quite similar to the first picture you posted although the docking point on mine is on the lower part of the section where you have written "MDI" and its its positioned sideways not lengthways as in your picture. Mine also doesnt have that "AUX IN" section either. The second picture definately isnt the same as mine. I really do appreciate your time and effort with regards to answering my query. If I can manage to get a picture up of mine that may make things slightly clearer. Thanks again

I think you may have the same unit as mine which is a USB port, to use a USB memory stick in, it will not play ipod, or mp3 players. You load music in files to the usb stick. So it is not the MDI unit that is in the picture, but looks very similar.

Cheers FRODO-ANNI, yes thats exactly what mine looks like a USB port. Thanks for clearing that up for me its most appreciated. So am I right in thinking that once the music has been put onto a memory stick I could plug it in and then be able to play it throught the head unit ?
