Could be a few things, I'd say either Incorrectly gapped plugs or if you disconnected the battery the ECU is back in 'learning mode' and will drink usually drink more than Gazza on a bender.. for a while.

Plugs are genuine and battery hasnt been disconnected

What's your average mpg after a 20-40 mile run, not flooring it?

i get around 28 mpg before the service
well yesturday i was driving the car i looked at my display of fuel range it ad 35 left so i put my foot down for a couple of secends it went straight down to 10 miles range left.which is so wrong....

Hi,
I had a similar issue with mines after they did some work, Don't know if the GTI setup is the same though.
My problem was in the back left of the engine bay, the clips into the fuel filter where loose and when you gunned the engine the fuel was flooding out.
Might be worth a look.

I disconnected my battery on Friday to fit my MFSW buttons then took it on a run Saturday.
Was using cruise at about 70-80 and only got 30mpg could this be because of this learning mode?

Not really. Range is calculated on the fly from mpg. If I boot the car and say the mpg is 25, the range might be 250 miles. If I then drive slowly, the mpg improves and the range will improve.
You got 28mpg before the service. What did you get after?
Have you checked tyre pressures? Whenever i took the car to VW, they would decrease tyre pressures to 22psi which made the handling and mpg worse.

Its ok now.I put petrol cleaner in and its alot better.thanks
