Firstly, I blame Chris (WhiteGTI) and Hurdy for this; And then I blame the whole of this forum for being such a bad influence!
Mat has had his TD's on his white Ed30 for a while and now Chris has got some and is raving about the difference they make to handling. They are a well established lightweight wheel with an excellent reputation and don't cost an arm and a leg.
Until I went on the forum's trip to The Ring, they simply would not have been a consideration. I found no fault with my car's setup around the Nordschleife - I didn't drive on the limit but neither did I drive like a granny. They aren't the prettiest wheel and I do particularly love my Smoked Chrome powdercoated Monza 18's and also have some Monza 17's I can try to sell too. But the TD's would enhance my VWR-KW-V3 coilover and Quaife diff setup even further and in a way well suited for both trackday and very spirited road driving when appropriate (not so rare!).
I wish I didn't love the look of my Monza 18's so much! However, the TD's are far from ugly imo.
Looks aren't the primary consideration but has anyone got any pics of either silver or black TD's on a red GTI, please?
Thanks :happy2:

So how do those OZ compare both weightwise and costwise?
They need to be 5-stud too - Those in the pic are 4.
-
they are forged and are light weight and do come in the correct fitment et48 (nearest )you ll have to get on oz website for details but these are different league to any thing team dynamics make mate , oz compare to bbs for quality :happy2:

Those are the Alleggerita's that I mentioned to Robin earlier today.
The 18's are around 1.1kg lighter than the TDPR1.2's. A set without tyres cost around £1,500. The TDPR1.2's under £500 for just alloys

You'd have to have 8x18's for those at 45 offset. They don't do 7.5 wide for those with 18" diameter.

Yeah, there's no doubting the quality and lightness of the OZ offering. It only really makes sense if you want the last ounce of performance out of the car and with the £1k you save, you could make better performance elsewhere for less :happy2:
Now if it were Jonnyc I was talking to, then it would be a different conversation altogether :jumping:

I think the red rimmed one suit other colours than red car's better.

....I assume you guys have something particular in mind?
I'm open to suggestions but they need to be lightweight and therefore contribute what Chris is raving about.
-
Nothing particular in mind, but don't believe these are right style of wheel for Robin's car that's all.
I think Candy Turbo's suggestion is the right one TBH.
-
those red rimed ones look gash . if it was me i would go for some oz's or compomotive mo's i had some a few years ago in 18 " on my car and they looked sweet .
-
nothing particular in mind either.
The TD is a great wheel but very common now. they cannot be beaten for weight vs cost :happy2:
maybe if you could get them in 18's (but that negates the weight improvement...)
there are limited options for a) cost b) weight, I think hurdy has gone thru them all :signLOL:
lead dont follow :happy2:
photoshop your car and try out some designs :happy2:

Yeah true they are getting common. The precise reason that I bought them is ^^^ cannot be beaten for weight vs. cost.
What do you mean 'maybe if you could get them in 18's? Because they are in 18s?
-
aaaaaaaa my mistake whiteGTI , :innocent: I thought yours were 17's ......
maybe he should try and get 19's
-
Ahh fair enough! Yeah, with the actual rim being so thick they do look smaller than they really are from photos!
-
They only go up to 18's!
Team Dynamics do some other really nice wheels, see here:
http://www.teamdynamicsracing.com/competition_wheels.htm
The TD 1 is nice!
-
i love those OZ Alleggeritas, current wheel choice in 18s and that colour for the scirocco, i know they aint cheap but look :rolleye:
still like the idea of the 17'' monzas on yours RR with a makeover
-
For me there was only one choice robin and as soon as you looked at them on mine the other day I could see the cogs turning in your head :P and best thing for me was I got mine brand new from them for under £420 as I know a parts dealer who's husband work for team dynamics and said no one can beat me on price lol so I had to have em lol and have dome more waiting for a member on here
-
....
Some great ideas posted but I think CandyTurbo is right to suggest the OZ one he posted a pic of as the most stylish. But I think he's wrong to think that the red stripe TD's look "max power" - Common perhaps but not max power.
For me this isn't about which wheel would look best on my car - I love the wheels I've got and they are true to the GTI as 'telephone dials' (just altered!). It's about a wheel which is much lighter in weight - Not to jonnyc standards, but to further improve the feel of the drive - As Chris describes in his build thread.
I like the deep dish Sportec too but I don't know how lightweight they are.
:happy2:
-
Function over form - get the TDs. You just can't argue with what you get for the money, flat black would be my choice on your car to key in with the carbon theme.
If you want some style to go with the weight reduction, invest in something a little cheekier like the OZs, Speedlines, Compomotive MOs (great looking wheel on a MK5)... or try searching out something a little more 'special'.
-
....
Okay, guys - I'm pretty much decided and just a question of sorting my cashflow.
Am starting another thread so that others can find info better.

heres a pic of mine with the td's on , just so u get a idea of what they will look like on red, photo's dont really do them justice, they looked 10 times better on the car, i was amazed how light they were without the tyres on as well.

^ Yes, most definitely looking very good but I'm still preferring the LeggyRita's for mine, especially on a 5-door :happy2:
Those TD's do look very what I call 'track funky' rather than 'street smart', in my opinion.
