Title: Rear screen aerial? DAB?
Post by: petesimcock on July 16, 2013, 08:09:57 pm
So I'm wanting to put a better head unit in my golf. I fitted a DAB headunit in my old car with a glass mounted aerial and it only worked when stationary. Is there a way that I can get decent DAB signal without having to change the aerial and remove the headliner? I've seen something about the rear screen elements being used as there is a spare plug or something. Can anybody shed any light? Also, which unit should I be looking for with DAB and USB possibly with an onboard 6cd changer.

Any help greatly appreciated, thanks!

Pete

There aren't any VW headunits with USB built in, you'll need the MDI interface as well if you want to use original VW equipment. I don't know what alternatives there are if you go for an aftermarket system but they would probably be cheaper!

If you want a VW headunit then the RCD510 has onboard 6 CD with DAB as an option. Beware most RCD510s don't have DAB, you need the one which specifically has the DAB module fitted. Also note the dreaded Canbus/battery drain issue if your car is older than about 07 reg.

I've only ever heard of people fitting the glass mounted DAB aerials so no idea about the rear screen aerial.

Hi
I have just fitted an rcd510 dab to my golf and I have a 30 quid internal glass mounted aerial which I also only get a signal with when I am stationary. I was thinking if I change the power feed to its own source instead of using the head units I may be better.

I have also seen people use the internal glass mounted ones on the rear window but I am unsure of how they got on with these. I have personally not tried it on the rear as my windows are factory tinted on the back so the instructions state it would be useless.

I would also be interested in whether a separate power feed would improve things.....just can't be arsed with stripping dash to bits again...
I have found DAB signal strength varies enormously, Chelmsford is non-existant, Colchester really really strong. DAB signal needs sorting out.
