So i picked her up a couple of weeks back now. Have been lurking on here a while not registered and I know my way aorund a Mk5 should we say....
No 1408, 1 former owner (was told it was a woman also) never been mapped say vagcom! and VW only services up to 65k, specialists thereafter!
So I have a grey Mk2 20vT that I have been working on a few years and really wnated a grey mk5 gti but then this 1 popped up and I had to have it lol. All important Sunroof which I needed (don't know why just really like them!)
So the idea is to keep this as quite a standard car compared to the Mk2 as this will be the daily and alos the nice car for the missus to drive lol
Unfortunatly lived most its life on the motorway so front end is quite road rashed and has always seen car washes by the looks of it, its littered with swirls when I picked it up!
Has been treated since then to a good clean, several hours with an orbital and some S17+ followed by 2 layers of black hole and some supernatural. Now looks how she should, even though I was trying to jump in and out the riain with it and stop half way through a panel a few times it looks a million times better!

Obligatory Shell Station Shot!

so as far as keeping to quite standard.... I have done a couple fo bits in the last few weeks to make it the car I belive it should have come form factory. Will have to upload those pictures later as currently at work!
One thing that is definatly planned is some bigger brakes... not to sure wheteher to go S3/R32 route or the BBK, suggestion please to what people are runnign would be great! I dont want to upset the balance of the car but moving from Brembo's in the MK2 to this is errr scary! :scared:
I need to have words with DaveB tro see what the best option would be. Origanl thoughts are BBk fronts and s3 rears good balance and not to much pedal stroke, but want to know what you guys are running really!
-
Looks very clean! Nice find especially with the sunroof, I love mine.
-
So shiny
-
So some of the parts that's have gone on in the last couple of weeks.....
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmm281%2Fdonx22%2F5E642CAD-90BE-46DE-8325-19A7B42AB267-700-000000AF53E66E74.jpg&hash=7e849a7af7f3a68ca4216ccdd4c66d8447c1a472)
Made a huge difference to the vehicle response time, drastically increased, works very well with the OEM dampers, I put brand new on all round as fronts where leaking when I inspected, still subtle ride and road confidence is much better now!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmm281%2Fdonx22%2F51A95E7C-EACA-41B0-9373-8A6FC188CC76-700-000000AF5CEB4627.jpg&hash=a34ec5674fe8fcabe5f9e831107b54341ac2cc36)

This has made a huge improvement to the way the car responds to the throttle, from setting off but has made a noticeable difference to the cars behaviour mid corner! Another benefit is the feeling of having a connected front end! One downside is that I am getting more gearbox whine into the cabin but only a small amount.
And the big on....

Was sitting it on the MK2 bonnet for a size comparison, will upload fitted images later!

here we go!

lower mount fitted, very easy tbh probably all of 30 minutes including getting old one out!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmm281%2Fdonx22%2FIMG_2375.jpg&hash=ac60f92c573cb711fe869f6aa4317e7f6bce5864)
Correct me if i may be wrong but I believe the intake to be made by ITG for VWR, sounds great, pulls very hard for a standard car!
-
I've just had s3 front brakes on my gti mate can't fault them
-
Lovely ED30 there, and some nice mods too. Do you have any after pics of the car with the VWR springs?
These are fast becoming the choice for mine, as IMHO the other popular ones look a bit low, whereas I hear these lower by only 20mm.
-
I can stick some photo's up 2moro, yes your right, I'd say only 20-25mm drop, really does transform the car though, response time has drastically decreased, yaw rate gain and roll delay is now much better and more balanced to suit the car.
That under sprung (wallowy) feeling from standard is now gone and steering feel has slightly improved!
My understanding is that VWR have done a lot of testing for this kit, and it's made by eibach.... Can't go wrong!
I've used eibach and Sachs in the past both in development tuning stages and final OEM sign off and find there quality to be some of the best OEM available out there (we're not talkin Öhlins here mind!)
I Have driven a few different setups in different mk5s and I really do like the VWR kit, coupled with work I've done in the past with them I thought it was a safe bet to go with this kit, really do love it! Even the missus likes the ride quality! :happy2: lol if your local to Wiltshire more than welcome a ride! Also around midlands quite often if this helps!
-
This may help...VWR/Eibach Springs are:
Front Spring:
Lowering range: 20-25mm
Spring rate: 31N/mm
Wire diameter: 13.25 mm
Coils: 6
Rear Spring:
Lowering range: 20mm
Spring rate: 33N/mm
Wire diameter: 12.5mm
Coils: 8.5
Plus a nice little certificate to go in your handbook and not have to worry about issues at the dealer! :jumpmove:

Appreciate all the info! Sounds like they have made more of a difference than I thought springs might. I'm very happy with the standard damping on the mk5, but the more I get used to the car, it does roll a bit more than I would like - so I'm thinking of springs and ARB's.
Many thanks for the offer - very good of you, but I'm a bit of a way from you (I'm in Berkshire). Let me know if you're ever passing through to Wiltshire on the M4 nr Reading. :drinking:

hows that mate? :happy2:
apologies for all the Honda's.....
-
Awesome dude looks like mine identical haha mines on aps and rides beautiful
-
Sits great.
-
Love the edition 30. Can I ask where did you buy the springs and engine mounts?
-
Welcome on board! :drinking:
Car looks really good, VWR mods are a good choice.
Have a look at the NQSBBK (as developed by DaveB) for your brake upgrade and if combined with the S3 rears it will give a great, balanced package. If your keeping your Pescara wheels, you'll need spacers as not a lot of BBK's will fit under them.
:happy2:

:happy2:
Already bin on the case with DaveB and calipers should arrive from the breakers on Monday! Just waiting for him to let me know where to send him the payment for the kit, (bit eager I know lol)
Get some more goodies today mind......

Whoops... :happy2: :jumpmove:
Some1 PM'd me about the intake and mount, I can't read them or reply yet sorry as not enough posts but to answer the question from MIlton Keynes and VWRacing on Tanners Drive. Direct to the place itself! I did some work there a few years ago and some stuff for the VWcup so I know the quality of the stuff!
Be a bit of an arse but going to try get the exhaust on 2moro on the driveway but really don't enjoy working on cars on the drive anymore lol ever since a friends mk3 cortina engine transplant in the snow I've never felt the same way abut driveway working lol
-
I like it. How's it sound?
-
Very nice car and some very nice mods! :congrats:
I have the same engine mount and I find it perfect for track use but annoying for daily drive...
Why not go for a coilover set? The springs are ok but they don't come close to a coilover set!
-
What is it about the engine mount that you don't like for daily use!? I find it transmits quite a lot of gearbox whine
Especially at low speed! Or that could be because I'm driving it harder...
Didnt go for coilovers as this is just the daily for me and the missus, I have a track car orientated mk2 20vT that I get to show ppl up in lol so I just want the Ed30 to be a safe, nippy comfy car. The VWR springs suit the damper rates very well! Has massively reduced the roll nd yaw delay on rear axle, I just wanted it a tad tighter!
Lovely car Rex I don't know if I could do that to a mk5 lol they cost too much! That's why I like to do anything a bitter extreme to the mk2!
After foisting the full miltek system with sports cat.... I decided that it was too loud! I didn't want something deafening! I've heard non res inthe past an it was never this loud... Me thinks I didn't take into account the Downpipe and sports cat! Anyway got myself a "small section resonated pipe" instead of standard size resonated! Seems to have done the trick! It's not boomy and still sporty tho! Doesn't drone but nice when you give it some! Part no is MSVW339 if anyone is interested! Now I have a spare nom res pipe if anyone is interested! Was on the car a whole 21 hours lol and 17 miles! Doh :stupid:

Well, it is transmitting a lot of vibrations in the cabin and that is not something I want for a daily drive... On track, I don't care about the low RPM vibrations
Thanks! Yup, not cheap by my standards also. But, they are worth every penny!
A build tread + videos of the mk2?
-
I have a build thread over on edition i think from ages ago or even clubgti. tbh i never really update them. I may make a quick one on here if anyone is interested. its basically a pearl grey mk2 late 91 spec, 1.8t 20vT lump with k03s hybrid RS6 turbo, custom map, peloquin diff, brembo's oln 288's eeeerr cut and shut rear axle. Weitec V3's on 15" E30 M3 BBS's with Bridgestone Re002 stickyickies! mated to a CTN diesel gearbox.
around 280 ish bhp and 340ish NM and uses every single one of them! does confuse most people, esp the M3 drivers :fighting:
Have to admit i don't egt any problem with engine vvibrations at all with the lower mount. I have standard engine mounts mind and I may replace them with new standard ones as they ahve a fair few miles on them!
-
Lovely car
-
I forgot to say thanks for the pics of your car on the VWR springs. Hope you're still happy with them, as I've finally decided to buy a set for mine.
Just wanted to tighten the suspension a bit - same as you, I feel the damping is fine, but I want to reduce roll a bit. Guess I need to also add ARBs to the (growing) list...
Hope all's well with your ED30 - many changes since the exhaust, or completely happy as is now?
-
So good! Keep up the good work!
-
so fitted the small resonated middle section and has been bedding in now for about 1500 miles, sounds great, maybe ever so slightly louder than standard but can't nortice tbh until you give it some, lovely note it produces and still not to loud at WOT but definatly know that theres something under the hood now at WOT.
Havn't done much else since really, had a custom map written from my good friend at DubUnit in Tamworth (personally I hate people working on my car, i'd rather do everything myself so I know its done right and not by someone I wouldn't trust to hold my cuppa, but he's the only perosn I would trust and recomend, the latest R32 mk2 hes building is a work of art!) pushing around the 330 mark and mountains loads of torque to go with it, will get it finally dyno'd sometime soon to get a max figure but not really fussed tbh, its the way it delivers it that I love!
I could do with the S3 intercooler now or or something biger even not to sure, just thinking for wehen i get the HPFP and the map adjusted to suit.
safe to say the clutch didn't even last the mapping process so I fitted the Sachs uprated clutch about a 3 weeks ago. Took about 6 hours and the use of a lift at Ramp and Wrench in Coventy (top block, great idea for a business!)
Have been going easy on it for about 700 miles top bed it in, finally gopt to give it the beans the other day and its so smooth and pull all the way to redline beautifully! until my coilpacks decided to blow up
Promptley sorted with the new red top coil pack revision same day and now pulls like a train. :jumpmove:
now my long list of things to do is getting shorter :happy2:
