Title: Rolling Road Day @ Surrey Rolling Road
Post by: Oli on August 27, 2009, 08:43:34 am
If there is enough interest from members, I am quite happy to organise a RR day @ Surrey Rolling Road, they are an independant RR, so have nothing to prove figures wise.

As an extra possibility I was chatting to Simon at Emaps last night, who might come down,  on the day for some re-mapping, with before and after runs/figures?

Details of SRR are here;  http://www.surreyrollingroad.co.uk

Please add your name to the list and if there are enough of us, I will sort some dates, and costings out.

I am guessing they are based in Surrey, but can you let us know where and what dyno they use

Been there a few times myself, Charlie who runs it is a nice enough bloke.  It is just a RR and nothing else, we've had a BBQ in the car park before (albeit at his previous premises) so that might be an option for you.

Rollers are 4wd Dyno Dynamics.  So long as he's not moved again since I was last up their he's in an old trials building at Quinetiq.

Agreed and with it being quite far off you will always struggle to get people to commit  :happy2:

Possibly...considering that it is 10 minutes from where I live!

Set a firm date, and I'll decide from there.

Good idea though

same here!

get some conformation oli and make it thirty quid like all the other good guys have and i'll be signed on the dotted line provided there are bisquits! plus i reckon there would be a lot more interest at 30 quid and a good excuse for a southern softies bourbon biscuit meet up  :happy2:

^ Actually thats a good shout...RR's are generally £30 for a group meet.

How many power runs will it involve? What figures will it produce.....I assume that we will just get the normal DD read outs of torque and power, or can they provide other information as well?

I'll speak to Charlie tomorrow, but his price was £35(usually £40), but like my mum always says, if you don't ask, you don't get.

I'll update tomorrow

Cheers

I'll be along to this, whenever it is. Charlie's a decent bloke and I've been to his for my car but we've also used him for some stuff at work.

Suppose I ought to get my car fixed before this, setting it in November gives me time to do that I suppose

On another note let's just set a date and see who can come to that (Saturday preferred for me!)

Also since it's just down the road from home and I may well have my bike license by then I may be persuaded to swap and bring the KMZ down after my car's had a run...

Not anyway close to Medway mate. SRR is all the near Chobham (or Longcross). Do a google maps search for Longcross, it's close enough.

All welcome (especially Jonny in his S3, as Id love to see that on the rollers)

 :drinking:

As you've said all welcome, can my two friends in their E36 M3 (pristine example) and Mazda RX7 (very heavily tuned) come along too??

If they run last then it won't cause too much inconvenience to others and will be pretty quick to alter the RR for a rear-wheel drive set-up.

Actually I think its a 4WD dyno so probably don't even need to do that.

Best to check though when I have seen JKM change for RWD they have to spin the dyno round and move all the cooling fans.

Very slow uptake to this (hence why I invited some other marques), because I thought no one else on here would be interested, but good to see that more people are signing up as we get nearer!

Looking forward to it!

Peeps are usually a bit slow on the uptake, Chris. We don't always know what we're doing too far ahead and don't want to commit. Who knows, Eva Mmmmdez might just call you for a date and you want to be available don't you

Looking to be a great turnout, and due to the fact that this is a mk5 gti forum meet, I will give priority to the tfsi engined vehicles, which I'm sure the others will understand.

Right this is the list so far.  All in red are confirmed, and I have put the TSFI cars first.  Please can those of you unconfirmed let me know either way.  I spoke to Charlie this morning, he will be open at 10am, with a run every 1/4 hour.  Payment can be made by cash or debit card, but preferably cash.  There is FREE tea and coffee making facilities there.  He can run 22 cars, so presuming everyone on the list confirms there is ONE spare slot.

As I said before I have given priority to the GTI's and 2.0TFSI engined vehciles as this is what this website is primarily for.  The cars listed below, were all early on the uptake, however they are first on the reserve list so if anyone drops out, or the final two slots arent taken they are welcome along on the day.  We still have four people to confrim so some more spaces may well be available.  I have two friends of mine attending, a 118D Sport and a T5 transporter, who are both having re-maps carried out but won't be running on the rollers.  The more the merrier, I say.  I hope everyone understands.

Reserve List

Russell  RX7
bruno  E36M3
Vish  Clio
RSsteve  Mr2

which of these cars are k03, i know myself and RR have them, who else, and is there anyone there with a revo stage 2+ ko3 coming.

Sy:happy2:

....WhiteGTI is K03 and IIRC Stage2 like me.

cmdrfire is also K03 but I've forgotten which Stage. I think he's Bluefin/Superchips.

You are correct with my car spec, but i wont be bringing/running the Golf because she is not too healthy at present :-(  Will bring the Lotus along

Just out of interest but how come there's a max? Surely more people running = more money for him. 22 runners would only take about 3 hours anyway..  :ashamed:

I live about 5 mins from SRR. There's a house I used to drive past to get to work that has two obviously modded white Leons in the drive, just wondered if it was any of you chaps? Also AMD have a base is Woking and I've seen you mention them before.

It would seem I'm not the only one who lives nearby. I know WhiteGTI does but there are quite a few local people! It's a shame this forum doesnt list your location under you avatar when you post as it's always nice to know who is local.

I've been to SRR several times, it's a piece of cake to find and is along side a very nice long straight piece of road that runs along side the M3 and along the back of Wentworth - behave though, the old bill are there a lot and I've seen some nasty crashes on along that stretch of road. I once saw a 200 SX emerge from the junction where SRR are located, he floored it, spun and narrowly missed an oncoming Range Rover. It can be tricky to find on maps, as it used to MoD and isn't always marked very well. In terms of facilities... there is very little! You've got a Starbucks at Bracknell Sainsburys, there's a chippy in Virginia Water which I can personally vouch for which is a 2 minute blast away, otherwise there are news agents in Windlesham, Sunningdale or VW - but nothing on site. It's basically used as an industrial estate and is totally dead at the weekend. SRR do tea and coffee though. Check it out on Google earth, the bridge across the road leads to the old MoD test track that is favoured by lots of cars mags and which you can now do track days at - it's a brilliant little circuit and very challenging.

The green arrow on the link below points to SRR, the map it's self on google is very misleading as what appears to be the junction into the site, is actually the bridge. Approaching from the West as most probably will, you can't miss the turning, go through the security check point and SRR is on the right. I only post this as I wasn't sure where to go when I first went, it's a big place.

I'm only about 10 minutes away from SRR myself; a few minutes closer than WhiteGTI I think. We occasionally send vehicles to him from work, which is itself only about a half hour away.

Oli,

Can you find out if the RR operators will be able to provide the raw measurement data to the runners?

Things like wheel HP / torque and pressure on one chart?  Maybe even AFR too?

Or if we can get them in a table so we can replot and analyse at our leisure?

Lads, we should really do a local meet at some point! It seems that there is quite a few of us around this area! I frequently meet up with DomT and Mitch, and Strat is also in the area too (known him for years). A local meet would see a fair few cars I reckon!

Post by: animal on November 12, 2009, 04:12:56 pm
SRR can definitely do AFR, I'm pretty sure they can record and plot the rest as well.

The only thing I think they have issue with is Haldex - I don't think their rollers get on with it at all, or at least they couldn't cope with it last time I was there.

cmdrfire, are you at TRL?

That is good.  Would be nice to have all the figures to be able to do a comparison and cross plot against the other cars.

Not calling you lush mate, before you get any ideas!

I reckon it is either cuprak1 or Poverty that is after the Recaro's.  Those boys are always on the lookout for some Recaro.  I have a Recaro already in the car, trouble is that my daughter get's the benefit of that particular seat rather than the driver or passengers...

I'd love to come up and meet some of you guys and see some of the cars but I'm not sure my Blue-oval tractor would fit in... It's looking pretty sorry at the moment too, sporting a battle scar from my commute along Ascot high street (not my fault i hasten to add...) I've had it mapped back to standard as well, so it's not even making 150bhp any more.   :sad1:

Not wanting to take this any further off topic, but that photo concerns me Robin - are those your seats?

Bucket seats such as those shown here are rarely strong enough to actually take harnesses through the cut-outs, they are purely cosmetic. It was the same story on the old RS Focus - people we putting harnesses through the seats, but the backs of the seat aren't designed to take the load from a harness and can buckle and distort in a heavy impact, offering little or no support and potentially fatal consquences as the seat collapses around you. Just thought I'd let you know in case you weren't already aware of the dangers. The seat backs are separate from the base and arent stiff enough, like proper one-piece bucket seats, to handle forces exerted on them.

I don't mean to preach, but it's quite a serious safety concern - particularly on a track. They look lovely though... I hope I can source some.

....Not what I want to hear, but I appreciate you offering such info.

I'm inclined to feel that if I'm involved in an impact which is that heavy, I'd prefer not to survive! I only use them on track and The Ring. The belts are TUV approved for what that's worth.

OK, not quite sure what is being used to determine running order, if I am running that late in the day I won't be there. I was one of the initial hoard to sign up too (See post #38). Let us know Ollie, if not I will just turn up in morning for the social elements.

Totally random order . But in fairness you mailed me on the 2nd nov to say you still couldn't commit???

But it looks like Robin will swap, if that helps.

IF anyone else wants to swap their order please contact the person directly you wish to swap with.

As I said earlier this was a total random pick, bar those who said they wanted a particular time in their email.

Not long now, see you all on the day

I'm sure they will.  But I have arranged it how Charlie at SRR wants to run it - every 15 mins.

Dan, yes there could be a possibility on the day, we'll just ask Charlie when we get there

I have a mate who can take your place in his ED30. We should be able to run Dan anyway.

Can you not even make it along for the social.

LOL! Decided to go to visit family in Dubai, haven't seen them for a couple of years and managed (unexpectedly) to get the whole week off work next week, so thought why not considering how awful the English weather is at the moment!

There will be plenty more opportunities to see you all again! Lets hope there's another meet before I get rid of the GTI in March/April time!

Title: UPDATE - Rolling Road Day @ Surrey Rolling Road
Post by: Oli on November 25, 2009, 12:37:51 pm
Just spoke with Charlie ref Saturday, and just given me a couple of point/rules;

1.  No wandering around the roads in the area, as it is an industrial estate (health and safety etc)

2.  20MPH speed limit on site

3.  Please be polite to the security guards!

4.  Most importantly, lets have fun and enjoy the day(my rule, but the most important one!!)

He also mentioned timings and said that take the 1/4 time slots with a pinch of salt, as he can usually buzz through the cars quite quickly, so please turn up nice and early compared to your timings.  He has to run 3 x M3's to run at lunch, which were pre-organised, so that should be interesting, lets hope one of our cars puts out better figures - Shouldn't be too hard I'm sure.

I will be there at 9.45, and I look forward to meeting you all

All the best

Oli :happy2:

Simon @ Emaps is mapping 3 pre-organised vehicles there, if anyone is interested, please pm me with your mobile number and I will get Simon to ring you - He has close ties with Oettinger, and my car is running his stage 2 map with the DSG torque de-limit

@Oli

Can you also confirm the data that would be available to takeaway and what is printed?

In my previous post you confirmed the data should be possible, I would like confirmation that raw data at each sample point would be available to takeaway or email.

This would include...

WHP
Flywheel power
Wheel torque
Flywheel torque
AFR
Boost

If also possible, can you ask them to provide a sample with what they can supply for the above?

TVM.

Being a DD set up prolly 3 runs as they have a "guarantee" to produce 3 back to back runs all within 1% of each other (i think from memory)

To put it bluntly, there better be 3 runs and a print-out or I won't be parting with any money.

....I'm told that Maha dynos measure power at the crank, while Dyno-Dynamics measure power at the wheels.
Hence the big difference.

you can not accurately measure flywheel power with the engine still in the car!

it needs to come out and done on a test bench / engine dyno to get a proper engine power figure.

something like this (its from Norris Designs)

as Hedge says...they do some strange witchcraft / creative accounting thing to give u a number that u can then argue over at the local.

Title: Re: Rolling Road Day @ Surrey Rolling Road
Post by: Janner_Sy on November 25, 2009, 05:26:41 pm
they dyno dynamics near me can give you both the whp and flywheel hp if youwant, its just that they normally only show the flywheel HP.

@cuprak1

i always get nervous before a dyno run in case it comes out really under powered. and highlights a problem. can get good figures on the dyno dynamics you know you.

another way of looking at it, though, is if you vu have a good car. thats why i like them i think

I was gonna say only coming the afternoon but brekkie down at the Old School cafe sounds alright to me. Might make that, I pass that place often and always wanted to know what it was like...

As to people being concerned about the rollers, Charlie's rollers put me at 248bhp a couple of years ago which I was pleased with :) Though I'm not expecting that this time 'round, because my car is broken (though I'm not sure how broken, natch :P )

you can not accurately measure flywheel power with the engine still in the car!

it needs to come out and done on a test bench / engine dyno to get a proper engine power figure.

something like this (its from Norris Designs)

as Hedge says...they do some strange witchcraft / creative accounting thing to give u a number that u can then argue over at the local.

You coming down to this Lee? Been ages since I've seen you!

....Exactly! That's really what rolling-roads are for: As a monitoring and diagnostic tool.

If your car isn't running well, a dyno session is a very good way of identifying and subsequently solving the problem. And that includes identifying what the problem isn't.

Mine seems to be running quite well.

Personally though I wouldn't class 10 minutes on the dyno as any more "diagnostic" than a 10 minute drive.
It will confirm a fault provided it is straightforward and simple but anything more complex requires a bit of investment time and resource-wise.

....I see what you mean about the 'diagnostic' aspect but I think you'll agree that if you or I went on JKM's dyno they'd be able to possibly diagnose some types of problem greatly helped by all their existing data and logging on our individual cars.

I'm only saying it's a worthwhile step in a process of elimination to find a fault if it's not already obvious from driving. I was just reinforcing your point about the possible benefit of dyno-ing a sick car.

Looking forward to seeing you again - I missed you at Goodwood.

Safe Journey! :drinking:

when a car is poorly the last thing i'd want to do is redline the motor!!!

....Please correct me if I'm misunderstanding you, but I'm assuming you have these 3 DV's : -

1) - OEM early versions - Some, but not all, have been known to tear especially on remapped cars under extra boost.

2) - Forge DV - Developed as an aftermarket solution to the above and very reliable and with other benefits.

3) - OEM recent version - So far, very reliable.

I think you can trash #1 if you have #3. Forge's #2 is the more expensive but if you already have it..

The fix was implemented from RevD onwards*. I've had both a Rev A and a Rev B on my car which both broke (replaced with forge unit before Rev D came out).

I believe the current version is Rev G?

*could be wrong, it's been awhile since I thought of this.

Myself, Mark and a couple of my other mates, that are coming up for remaps, are going to the cafe for 9am, and then onto SRR for just before ten.

Please rememeber to bring your money, £35 in either cash or card form.   And finally there are tea and coffee making facilties.

Yup thanks for organising the day Oli was good to see the usual suspects and newbies and the inevitable banter about RR numbers etc.

Guess the GT2871R upgrade is not that bad after all...2nd time i've seen Dan's car on the rollers and it sure does produce the goods.  :happy2:

Still i think i was more impressed with Stu's S3....Revo S1 + DP = 337bhp!

Great day out - Many thanks for organising Oli.
Finally got to meet all the friendly faces in person - and see all of the cars in the flesh.
I was happy with my car's figures (although from now on I promise to use Super Unleaded and not the crappy 95 RON  :ashamed:)
Must also say thanks to the Surrey RR guys for hosting us so well and getting through the car's so efficiently.
All in all a great bunch of people and a great day out (if I'd known DanGBs car was so mental I would have stuck around longer!)

now that makes perfect sense. presumed a stg 1 gti from the figures but low torque for a stg 1.

shows the dyno is accurate cos they are some perfect figures for a std cupra.

what dyno did he get the high torque figure. 360Ibft seems abit high for a stage 2 anyway. thats stage 2+territory

imo 323 bhp is what i thought stage 2 k04s were putting out. Id have expected about 320-330Ibft torque though

Power and torque, buts its odd, after the RR run, DanGB scanned his car, and cleared the codes, reset ecu and cuprak1 took the car to another rolling road day straight after where they also had the dyno dynamics rollers and they couldnt get a propper reading due to the car keep wanting to jump out of the rollers, They tried 10 times to get a reading but it just wasnt happening. Says the car feels much stronger now again but who knows could just all be in his head, we all know how these things go with our beloveds.

Well here it is,

I was quite shocked to be honest. I do beleive I have some serious issues with the car, so do think its quite high.

Previously ive seen 380-390, so its spot on in that sense, but I was running water/meth injection today (although the map has not been modified to take advantage of this fully)

The graph shows the third and forth runs. The 1st and second were perhaps 360/370/380 (cant remember) so the third was the highest. To note: I reset the adaptations just before it went on the dyno.
For the forth run I switched off the water meth via a switch in the cockpit and ran straight away, this gave 372, so maybe this drop was directly due to no water meth. the graph is slightly different - higher in one place.

Whats people opnions on the runs today? Most were done in 3rd gear, but mine was done in 4th due to wheelspin.

PS: On the graph above (390hp) it was 332.3 whp. I thought thats odd as ive dynos ive run show above 350whp at that HP figure.

done in 3rd gear????

strange

ive used 3 seperate DD rollers in the past and they used 4th gear for the pulls. And AMD use 5th gear. We need to get some dyno operator to post on here to explain what gear should be used and what the difference could be if you use a different gear.

mega power there dan. making me want water meth even more now.

^^^unfortunalty(from memory) one was Mitch's and it only made 167bhp.

Some fault traced to the fuel Pump sensor which DomT diagnosed with his lappy :sad1:.

Good of SRR to wave the RR charges for Mitch's misfortune.

Good of SRR to wave the RR charges for Mitch's misfortune.

Bit of a misunderstanding there, Charlie said if he had another run he would waiver the cost for the first run, if Mitch got it out of Limp home mode, which was then found to be more than that - fuel pump I beleive?  I ended up paying for Mitches run(as Charlie couldn't find him), but because of the problems and low figures, Charlie charged only £20  - I have messaged Mitch directly :happy2:

Most actually went down due to heat soak. I think my strongest was my 2nd run, so that disproved that!!

i thought you were running a HPFP as well mitch?? but yeh sorry you have problems but at least you know about them know, although i would have though you might have noticed a drop in power, especially when your stage 2 its alomst a hundred horses  :surprised:

I dont thinks its been running right since day one as i havnt noticed the drop! im used to driving a 1.3 diesel van so anything feels rapid to me! It would explain why whitegti's stage 2 ko3 feels sooooo much faster than mine! Im looking into swapping to revo also! Im happy this has happend as now i know theres an issue but im annoyed at the same time coz its just more money to chuck in the pit! : (

hehe it was 301. something! point 0!

and dan most were very consistent, mine were, but most of the people without big coolers saw a drop on the second or third runs probably heat soak.

My second and third runs were nigh-on identical; but I do have that S3 cooler.

Here's my graph to compare. Also on Dyno Dynamics rollers.

Looks like you all had a great day out :happy2:

Would and could have been there, but it was just a little too far for me as a northern nancy :ashamed:

Anyway, thanks to DanGB for posting up his power run as it gives me a decent comparison for my Dyno dynamics run. Yes, I know comparing things like this is like comparing apples with bananas, but it is the nearest I'll probably get to comparing my K04 with a car with the Garrett GT2871R that I was going to fit.

Below is a graph combining the two runs and gives an indication of how the two turbo's compare.

Dan's is great up at the top of the rev range, but I don't think that I'd sacrifice the low end urge for the top end gain of Dan's car. This was one of my primary reasons for sticking with the K04.

At one point Around 3250rpm) the K04 is making around 100bhp more than the Garrett :surprised:

Why the hell would you run these cars in 3rd gear????

Thats what I was thinking, some of the cars were nearly jumping out of the dyno. Stage 1 s3 made 330hp or something like that, wonder if the added traction on the dyno gave that result or just because it was setup differently?

Some of the big german tuners, when dynoing haldex cars somehow disable the rear wheels and only run the front wheels of the car on the dyno

CupraK1 really needs to fit a pump, and im gutted my car is playing up and I couldnt get her on the rollers  :sad1:

Whats happened to CupraK1,s torque?

this is a strange one, car had a lot of errors, cleared them, and went on another dyno dynamics at power engineering 40 mins after this RR day and the car made over 350 but was skipping and launching off the dyno in 4th... as they didnt have enough something or other to strap it down! cant wait to get the damn fuel pump sorted :)

If the car isnt strapped down properly it would produce higher results. explanation here:

If it makes 300 or whatever horsepower it will do independant of the gear used. At the end of the day it is only a function of torque against RPM.

Power (bhp) = (Torque lbft x RPM)/5252

you went to another RR straight after :surprised: you really wernt happy with the figures then. If a dyno operator cant strap a car down well enough id take their readings with a pich of salt TBH. if they cant get the basics right, then it'll all be off from there on. Any chance of seeing both dyno sheets

it was another rr day alrady set up and i said i would pop down but when i got there everyone twisted my arm to run...

It got to 330-340 bhp then lifted off the dyno and scared the sh*t out of the operator.. he tried about 10 times as poverty said... but it was too late to get up the torque bar.. they have a sunken into the ground dyno and it apparently needs this..

They didnt give me any graphs as i didnt pay any money.. becuase the results were inconclusive :S

based on the graph curve and their predictions they said it should be a healthy 340 which is fine..

see the bottom line.. im wayne lol

wow torque is not that much different at higher revs as i thought, yet dan's car makes 50 more bhp.

that difference below 4k rpm is monumental tho, and for everyday driveability, is i'd have to say just what you'd want.

Happily keep the £££'s in the pocket and spend it on fuel and track days rather than BT'ing a K04 car.

If it was a K03 car (like Dan's used to be, long time ago) then the GT28 is a worth while jump.

Cheers for doing the graph Mr H.
Title: Re: Rolling Road Day @ Surrey Rolling Road
Post by: Hurdy on November 29, 2009, 06:02:20 pm
No problems. It didn't take too long to do :happy2:

What you have to remember is that when the cars are running full on Dan will be using revs from 5k upwards almost all the time and so the bottom half of the rev range where my car makes better figures is rather superfluous :happy2:

When pootling around town the K04 is much better, so it depends on how you want to make the power/torque and how often you use the key part of the rev range
Title: Re: Rolling Road Day @ Surrey Rolling Road
Post by: chungster on November 29, 2009, 06:06:26 pm

....Exactly. Where you have your optimum power has to suit what kind if driveability you prefer. That's partly why I stayed with my K03 instead of upgrading to a K04 when my turbo needed replacing. The K04 cars go like sh!t off a shovel but the K03's just seem to sparkle a bit more lower down.

I'm glad to report that my bhp on SurreyRR's dyno was very close indeed as on JKM's.

I enjoyed meeting the Cupra boyz and an extra thankyou to Neil for letting me try out the Forge TWINtake - I shan't be cancelling my order!

Neo, you noticed that my steering feels a little heavier than some other GTI's - I think it may be influenced by the feedback from lighter wheels. Did I tell everyone about my new OZ wheels?

....Indeed. And my plot at SurreyRR was only 3 bhp different from my last JKM plot - Both DD rollers.

I'm doing some DD sessions at JKM before christmas re my Forge TWINtake, so I'm expecting that those plots will further support evidence of consistency. Even the DD rollers at that Brum Jap outfit we attended with R32OC were very close to JKM's.

That looks suspiciously like Uxbridge... Did you blast up to Torque of the Devil? or is Power Engineering still there?

Some great numbers here guys, wish I could've made this. Maybe next time around I will actually have a GTI to turn up with.

And I'm glad some of you approve of the local roads, I commute along those every day!  :happy2:

Right, have just scanned in my Dyno plot, was pleased with result considering I have not pushed boost or timing, although, like others torque does seem to be down a little.

Dom

I think both yours and NeilM's suffered on the dyno with wheelspin, so torque would be reduced but hp not affected.

Simon (emaps) did the same logging on Marks Ed30 prior to the RR and came out with the same figure of 280bhp. And also confirmed the MAF is up the swanny. Seems to be a very accurate way of determining output.
