My Dad's just been looking to change his car again and was looking at a couple of new Volvo's both top of the range R-Designs, a V40 and a V60 and one of the things he pointed out was that the tax was either £30, £20 or £0 and they were all on paper capable of doing an average mpg of over 60 or more and this got me thinking.
Where are the government going to get their money from in the years to come? Surely at some point these cars with little or no tax that do 60,70, 80mpg are going to have to be taxed in some way? or in 10yrs time will we just be paying £3-4 a litre for fuel to balance this out?
Give it 5-10yrs and the 2nd hand market is going to be flooded with cars doing high mpg and with very low tax costs (even the performance versions) so will the last generation of "fuel guzzlers" like the hot hatches, 4x4's etc of the last 7-8 years be worthless?, given that cars nowadays are built to last a hell of a long time there'll surely be some bargains kicking about soon?

Even my 315bhp M135i is only £200 with the sports auto box. I think thats pretty cheap for the performance.

The top rate is now £490 a year . Now thats ok for Ferraris , Range Rovers , Astons , Lambos etc , but some cars like R32 its very bad also the RX8 is top rate too . I object to paying the same tax for my car doing 2-3000 a year when a person doing 40000 a year pays the same . It should have been put on fuel many years ago and will be put on fuel eventually due to the reason above.

Don't worry, I'm sure which ever party is in power in the future if they work out their losing revenue they will just adjust the brackets accordingly. At least they have stopped calling it road tax (given the amount that actually gets spent on the roads :fighting:)

Simple answer:
Increasing the cost of fuel!

this is why i decided not to get a r32 because of the £500 a year tax

The problem with putting more tax on fuel, rather than Car tax is that everything we buy is affected by the price of fuel
Food, clothes, electricals etc etc all have to be hauled at some point and as soon as fuel price goes up, so does everything else!
We cant win - as we end up paying for it somewhere else. I think ultimately it will be fuel that carries the extra tax!
-
As above, they'll simply adjust the rates so you pay £1000 for anything requiring petrol/diesel, and then you pay on size or power of the electric engine. Alternatively, if everyone has the same car, then it'll be just an annual tax, probably higher than the average cost now.

They'll alter the bands again in a few years so there will be more and the low tax cars now will rise and the newer more economical less co2 cars will replace them

I read London is only to be congestion free to electric vehicles - so that's the start!

I have heard that the £0 road tax threshold will be lowered at some point , so cars that are free tax now might not always be.....
