So the golf's now getting near to where I might be able leave it alone for a bit  so I thought I'd put up a little build thread.
I bought the car bog standard last November
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2FDSC_0706.jpg&hash=0922a5e0f6a79364ebea68e1f8cb27a4c4abf0cf)
As a high mileage rep-mobil for a decent price, test drove it and everything was as it should be, i had to wait a week to pick it up as the dealer was replacing discs and pads on the front as part of the deal and they also ended up doing the rear pads too which was a bonus!
Everything was all good until me and my son where on the way home after getting a one way train ticket to kent, when on the first dual carriageway slip road it went into limp mode! I switched it off and re-gained boost but it kept going back to limp mode so I took straight back the dealer who was surprisingly helpful as I had the bought the car "spares or repairs & should not be driven away" according to my receipt!
Anyway, after a lot of test driving trying to replicate the limp mode it finally did it with one of there mechanics in the car and they agreed to look at the car instead if just clearing the fault code and starting again.
They gave me a brand new A class to get home in and three days later I was back on the way to kent to pick up my new car with a brand new turbo fitted free of charge! Result! :jumpmove:
I left it alone for a few months until I got the modding bug again and started off with a bit of DIY power increase. Sounds a bit pikey but it did the trick....
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2FIMAG0058.jpg&hash=7e793266f2792154479f3a4b88d375ca59ed1d7e)
Cutting the cat out....
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2FIMAG0073-1.jpg&hash=33ef539ffc69cc83566751ff46423a89550b8210)
And all welded back up...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2FIMAG0060.jpg&hash=6a7ec5eb686219ac1f1fe13dd91c6b2f088d53dc)
So the next thing was the exposed tail pipes so I was lucky enough to be given a GTI rear valance for free!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2F2115d9147240439616b80430e8291ccb.jpg&hash=782a942d63dac4d7dec7279bcc336e9f925faa35)
I had a few exhausts parts kicking around so made myself a suitcase delete. I don't have any of it off the car but here's it fitted..
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2FIMG-20130522-WA0000.jpg&hash=31de80df5d66005ed2ea02242c6cd41c704e4b90)
Next up was the wheels, from these...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2Fee3e6c2f8efb585f36cd5a907d145625.jpg&hash=b751f4524993db1c56363920c35692bbca5e874d)
To these that I refurbed in gloss black...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2FIMAG0235.jpg&hash=5eb256574a8e6e0dd2b7b7f7719d8bc59f75375f)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2Fb900d35e2339480f8065834776603c43.jpg&hash=ed5d000280961e2808be7645d0426c81aafe180f)
Sorry for the crappy phone pics!
After I had fitted the wheels it obviously needed lowering but I didn't get round to that for far too long!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2FIMAG0336.jpg&hash=6f4200cf473a73ebf373892dfd1659fc443a5770)
You might have noticed my next mod in that last pic which was a colour coded rear valance.
From this...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2Fce772291b9c58cab7861d196ddf36695.jpg&hash=05164ba23e528c84281f67f334d8a35151806364)
To this...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2F335779ba3374532f1ef55a4858d32ec9.jpg&hash=08e2a6ec8e085a89f52e6bf487e06e634eab54d6)
The paint isn't a great match but if you don't know its wrong you'll probably never know but I do want it reap intend as there's a few chips in the number plate plinth.
Next up was my favourite mod so far! Getting rid of the horrid standard front end...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2F4c36e03116b810384722b036de5a8f63.jpg&hash=3f92d138b10b2dcf079177d960445e9291342753)
For a GTI front bumper..
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2Fb54f09d8d2fda3555253c553ea71a70c.jpg&hash=ef24e52c5dd7f0eff2f98813883afef0e6807751)
Loving the new look I admired it for a few weeks and just took a few pics here and there...

Need to space my fog lights out as there sitting back too far, not sure if that down to the replica bumper or the eBay fog lights?
Next up was some Eibach lowering springs.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2F98d0e545b00fdae58f72d91a3bf17fa6.jpg&hash=a648bfa4e11e7141cf9bd9153ca94a20d87d9b0e)

In need of a refurb but will look sweet wrapped in some nice Pirelli p-zero Nero's
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2Fa55c02807b08b8eba177bc399cadc29b.jpg&hash=2f79a51eadc49be6300ec8def6e2c71fbaab2581)
Also I have some GTI side skirts waiting to be colour coded but I won't get round to the for a while now.
Any comments welcome!
-
going on nicely--keep thinking of changing my front bumper but quite like it now with the votex splitter on--You know you won't stop modding your car now you have started :signLOL:
-
Cheers mate, Its definitely a slippery slope. :signLOL:
-
Great build thread. Cars looking spot on :happy2:
-
Thank you. :happy2:

what a difference in what you bought and now what you have. :happy2:
question, did you get the gti grilles with the bumper or did you buy them seperate?

New wheels are being powder coated this week! Also I've been doing a bit of work on smoothing the side skirts today... Looking forward to painting and fitting them!
-
Top work Will. Are those 'S' wheels of the 18" variety! I really fancy a set for ours, but haven't managed to find many pictures yet, and they fetch decent money to just try them!

Thanks mate, They are RS6 reps. I'll be selling them on when the new wheels are fitted....
-
What size springs did you buy? 30mm drop?
-
Sorry dude, I meant the second set of wheels, not the gloss black ones. Are the S6 17's or later S4 18's?
I really fancy them in 18 for ours.
Rich
-

I'm not sure mate? They have dropped it about 45mm I think. They were second hand when I bought them.

Can't wait to get them on.
-
Keep up the work mate, shes looking good! :happy2:
-
Keep us updated with the new wheels as I recon they will look awesome!
-
Should hopefully have them fitted Sunday morning, I'll upload picks as soon as they're on!
I also gave the body shop my skirts to sort out as there was some weird reaction with the filler primer :signLOL:
-
You fitted them?
-
Yes....
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2F5ac8d0044683f4a9327b59b4381c87ef.jpg&hash=f5947d07479833cba15aa1f0163230cc3c58a5da)
Center caps are being sprayed to match as they were a little off colour.
Can't wait to get the caps on!
-
Looks absolutely spot on Will, will most definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for a set now I recon. Top work matey
-
Very nice mate.

-
Little update today, got myself some nice 3D gel number plates...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2F7BFFE736-0ECB-4463-9522-C5747BAEEC2F-3546-0000025B4CEDDF94_zps56009e55.jpg&hash=8c6962aec5b10b9b2075c82a93443743672dee3c)
Crap pic but there so smooth and shiney! Hopefully center caps will be done by the weekend then I'll get some decent pics up.
Also going to try and do a wheel alignment at the weekend if I get time.
-
Sneaky little wheel alignment on the way home from work tonight....
Also running a front plate and a GT Sport badge.

Really needs some GTI skirts mate..
And remember, GTI ones not R32 ones ;)
-
And remember, GTI ones not R32 ones ;)
Too late.
The set I bought were already painted, I think they look pooh painted if there not smoothed. Might get them back from the body shop soon.
-
Hahaha
That's fine if they're getting flatted and painted I was just talking about if you were buying them new from a dealer or TPS or whatever.
As GTI ones are £30 or so a side and R32 ones are £hundreds?? per side.
Bet you can't wait to fit them haha
-
Yeah the R32 skirts were around £250 a side :surprised: last time I checked and full GTI skirts and fitting kit was only £140
Yeah can't wait to fit them. I think it's one of the last mods I've got planned really :signLOL:
-
Car looks pucker mate, good work so far :happy2:
-
Very nice, gti bumper makes it look much better!
-
Thank you! I couldn't stand the stock bumpers.
Hopefully the skirts will be back soon and my centers will be painted :stupid:
-
Small update...
Centers fitted.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ff213%2Fwillg40%2F893a90f446c93e34790be5fb7ac07347.jpg&hash=ff53b4ed1a7f3bb0dc486184ffec0ac1f1f7f4b8)
Wheels are dirty (as is the rest of the car) and the centers are clean so they appear to be a different colour but there not.
Skirts are smooth and painted so just need to find the time to stick the support strips on and fit them, can't wait to get them on.
-
The wheels suit the car so well! Looking very good!

^^^^ haha. Thank you!
Will try and get the skirts fitted this weekend and upload pics.
-
So, I've finally managed to get the skirts on! Didn't bother using the support strips in the end and they've stayed on and fit fine so far...
Took a few pics of it when it was clean the other day.

I'm really pleased with how it looks now the skirts are on, but can't get the idea of having a real DSG GTI instead :rolleye: so I've put a few half assed adverts up for it to see if any takers come along. I'm not really sure if I would let it go now I've put all this effort into it but we shall see.
-
Cracking mate
R32 rear lights would really finish it off :)
Trust me a GTI isn't as special as you think lol :surprised:
-
looks spot on and keep it now :happy2:
-
Very nice. I like how it looks now. :happy2:
-
Very nice mate
I think a gti spoiler would finish your rear off.
-
Very nice mate
I think a gti spoiler would finish your rear off.
Off topic but how many different spoilers are available for the MK5's. I want to change mine for the Caractere one but they never seem to come up.
-
I'm not too sure on the different spoilers
-
Nice work. Looks lovely on those wheels. I was considering a set for mine but used your photo to shop mine but not keen on my colour. So what's next?
-
Cheers for all the good comments guys!
Well, up next is leave it alone! But we all know that isn't going to happen lol. So I'll keep my eyes peeled for a TR GTI bootlid that's not a million miles away so I can benefit from the tinted rear glass as well as the spoiler.
I would like a remap but I'm not really to bothered about that just yet...
-
With great thanks to mateyguv, I've split my lights and tinted them!

I'm really chuffed with how they turned out, I'll probably be doing the same thing with my original lights but maybe with led rings in the inners and outers.
Bit of a mass fitting day on Sunday so I'll update with more pics them.
-
Looks spot in mate and cheaper than buying some, good DIY job...... :happy2:
Dan
-
Keep up the good work! Looks tidy!
-
Wheels are absolutely spot on.
-
Lights look great mate. What paint did you use? Rub the silver down first?
Si

Thanks guys :happy2:

Nah just sprayed it straight on... Did bleed through in a few places but after a light hanging coat and 2 good coats it was all good.
I used U-pol gloss black
Sealed them up with Tiger Seal.
-

I used a couple of different size filler knifes, very similar to what mateyguv uses in his video.
Removing the black plastic trim on the outers helped a lot and that area was he most difficult to split. I had to use a fine flat bladed jewlers screwdriver to open the top of the lense up, hammer and chisel style! :surprised:

Cars look great, the difference before and now is like night and day :happy2:

now why didnt i just do that to my rear lights! great job mate, they look spot on! :happy2:

Also had a fiddle with the rear camber and maxed it out, will be setting it up properly whilst it's on the ramp having the tracking done to get the fitment right.
Brakes were bled today at my local mot place and feel good, not had a chance to really test them out yet...

Thanks mate, it's just the honey comb I think. I want to keep the gt sport grills I have for it but the main grill won't fit without cutting some of the backing off.

Hey just bought a TR Gttdi myself, planning some mods too. What's the benefit of cutting the cat out? Don't you need it for the mot? Thanks :)

I'm not going to get into the whole debate about needing it now or not but all I can say is I have passed my last mot with it cut out.
As for the gains, slightly better turbo spool and a bit more low end grunt. Not massive differences but worth doing if you can do the whole job yourself.
