Hiya, just a couple of quick questions about the Volkswagen Racing Panel Filter:
1.) For those that have it, did you notice an improvement in engine response/eagnerness?
2.) Are there really many differences/advantages between cotton and foam filters? (K&N+BMC vs VWR+ITG?)
3.) Is there any where online to buy it?
Thanks for taking your time to read :happy2: :happy2:

Hi DubKid,
Every time you renew any panel filter you will notice an improvement in response.
It's very difficult to say that one type of filter is clearly superior to another and it's quite hotly debated. Each manufacturer will argue that their product is superior.
Unless it's changed recently, VWR don't have an online 'shop' - Just give them a phonecall and they'll help you.
Hope this helps :happy2:

I'm planning on getting this,
It not an expensive mod, and i guess there will be improvements - i would have thought if VWR are selling it
-
i got one a couple of months ago and im very happy with it does add that little bit more noise but not to much and helps breathing and increases torque slightly. only downside to this one over the ITG is it need cleaning once a year but hey ho :happy2:

....Is the VWR panel filter foam or paper? If you have a paper filter like the oem, it's a good idea to replace it with a new one at every service.
I'm currently running the ITG foam one which I've done about 40k miles on but I have me car serviced at VWR every 10k miles.
:happy2:

vwr are foam :happy2:

vwr are foam :happy2:
....Cheers, Andy :happy2:
Next question: Is the VWR foam panel filter oiled?
And is it a loose fit or a tight fit in the oem airbox? (The ITG is very tight - Said the Bishop to the Actress).
-
roc one not oiled and very snug, not fitted one on the golf yet

....Not oiled is reckoned to be good and is certainly less maintenance.
Very snug is also best.

as wigit says its foam and is a perfect fit as they designed it to be! :happy2:
they did say just give it a wipe over once a year with a damp cloth, or atleast thats what i think they said! :rolleye:

thanks guys, you're a helpful bunch  :signLOL: :happy2:

Slightly off topic but I found out something of interest today. BWA engined cars have a different airfilter to BYD engined cars.
The BWA filter ends in an A whereas the BYD ends in a B and is thinner. Not by much mind.

....Interesting. You would expect a later version to be possibly fatter for a more snug fit rather than thinner. The oem airbox/engine covers haven't been revised as well have they?

Sorry chaps but whats ITG ? :stupid:
-
^^^ ITG (Induction Technology Group) makes a very good panel filter for the Mk5, it's an oiled foam filter which a lot of people including Revo rate very highly. :happy2:

So should i go for the ITG Filter rather than VWR's ?
-
Only you can decide that Rich.
The VWR is dry which ITG will say isn't correct for a foam based filter.
However others will say the oiled ITG could cause issues with the MAF.
I have run both a dry foam and ITG oiled filter on mine and both gave very very similar results. :happy2:

I have a vwr panel filter, fitted it to my car about 2 months ago, cant say i noticed a difference to be honest, feel better for having it though :stupid:

Hmmmm . . . that is extreme overkill. :sad1:
The standard VW paper air filter is good for 60k miles. My original paper element has done 30k miles, in quite a dusty environment, and is still fine, and would probably be fine until the 40k service. However, being as I can do it myself, I'll change it though.

The BWA is the standard GTI 200PS engine, the BYD is the Ed30 230PS engine, hence the thinner air filter.

....That's odd - I could swear it was you who advised changing it at every service  But obviously not.

I was told by a very well renowned VW tuner, that the OEM paper filter was perfectly capable and up to the job.
:happy2:

....Did anyone say it wasn't perfectly capable and up to the job?
The point I'm making is that it's a relatively cheap disposable and using the servicing session is a perfect opportunity to perk your car up with a fresh one.

I might have said something like half the interval, but don't think I'd ever advised on changing it every service! Or had I been schmokin' something?
